Perhaps the rumored demise of Ohio basketball is greatly exaggerated?

Great first half. I think tightening up the rotation is paying off. But we can't play with just a 6 man rotation all season long. Hopefully Gollon and Dartis are are getting close.
Mostly playing with a 7-man rotation with Block and BVP off the bench. And don't expect Dartis back this season.

I was hoping for at least an unacceptable from Chuck Landon. But I give you this Pultizer material:

Chuck Landon Grades the Herd: Virginia Tech 41, Marshall 20

OFFENSE: F

The object is to score points.

DEFENSE: D

The secondary got absolutely shredded.

SPECIAL TEAMS: C—

Missing an extra point kick is a momentum killer.

COACHING: F

The players didn't appear ready to play on either side of the ball.

OVERALL: F

This was a winnable game for Marshall.

Only black spot from today was turnovers, especially from Kirk. He is like the QB who can make some great throws but you question whether it is worth it because he throws too many picks in the process. I love how fearless he can be, but I just wish it would come with a side of caution and control. Sometimes he just barrels in there and assumes he will figure something out when he gets there.
While I agree I thought Kirk did a better job today of not dribbling the air out of the ball. We have a number of guys with good court vision and passing skills and the ball found their hands a lot more today because Kirk let others handle it.

I'm hoping we can get Gollon back in time for league play because it will create a nice roster balance that we didn't have last year. Even without Dartis we'll have a nice rotation with Gollon.

My God that was awesome. Man I love beating Marshall...Nice to right the ship after 2 close losses in Huntington the last 2 seasons. I believe that makes us 5-2 in the last 7 bball matchups and 4-1 in the last 5 football matchups of the rivalry.
I'm hoping we have them again next year in bball. They lose Elmore, Burks and Watson which is half of their scoring. Didn't see anyone today that looked like they could step into those shoes.

Recognizing the medical confidentiality issue, has there been any official statement regarding Dartis or Gollon? At one point there was a mention (announcement?) that Gollon had a "sports hernia." Generally that has a 6-week recovery assuming no complications.

James Gollon's target date for full practicing is Dec 17. He will make a huge improvement to the rotation.

New boards look good. Decent sized crowd. Marshall is normal Marshall. Try to show out on a Sdunk and clang it off the back rim. When adversity comesherd players get up in each other rather than respond on the court. Always high character guys on those teams. Herd Fans i said hi to brushed me off. Rode with someone else and parked/walked from the blue lot. Russ and Rob dida great job as usual, boy is that area up there getting crowded. Pretzels were warm soft and appropriately salty. Jackie os is a nice touch. Good to see alums back in the roundhouse.

Team looked good. TK handles the ball a little loose and some individuals are working hard but the offense was moving, filling and finishing pretty good for early season. Short bench and line up. Defense was dialed in, jumping, switching and playing in gaps well. Carter keeps getting better, Doug was solid, Gavins shots were was really good this day. Really good... May attribute that to the ball movement letting him get ready, catch and let fly with great confidence. BVP looked good as well

Good trip to Athens. Good game. Happy to see things heading in a positive direction as the season is young anda tough stretch in the next month. Look forward to seeing them over here vs an improving Ball State club

Is there a target date for Dartis?
Dartis answer to a direct question about whether red shirting or not - "Not sure". So - That's not a yes or a no.

But I gotta think he will

and if Jordy redshirts, then we gotta start worrying about the dreaded graduate transfer deal. If he's anywhere near healthy, there are any number of big time schools that would love to have someone with his 3 pt shooting ability...

One more thought from this game...

...that Taevion Kinsey kid is a nice athlete, but I don't think he gets much playing time on this year's squad had he chose the Bobcats over the Herd. Could have turned into another Culver situation. He also needs to work on his FTs a bit.

Man I thought that name sounded familiar, didn't realize we had offered him. That kid could fly, but seemed a little limited otherwise.

I was pleasantly surprised by the game as a whole. Gavin had a great game. The shooting was better. Carter and BVP continued their trend of good play. We rebounded the ball very well. Guarded Marshall just well enough to force them into bad shots. Elmore and Burks got theirs, but that was about it. And they had to work hard for their points.

But about Marshall putting on the press with mostly starters against the backups and walk-ons...that was bush league. It was Marshall, though. What should I expect?

Had a quick and nice chat with Paul Baron Saturday (disappointed that Danny Nee took off before I had a chance to say hi, but did say hi to Billy Hahn).

We both agreed that Saturday's crowd (both overall and specifically the student section) wasn't bad by today's standards but paled in comparison to what we used to get when Paul played in the mid 1980s. I tried to paint a picture for his sons about how exciting those teams were that their dad played on, not to mention the MAC opposing players - Harper, Palombizio, . . . that visited the Convo.

It's not like it was a close game and still in doubt. It wasn't like the Terd was pressing the whole game. They put the press on, with several starters on the floor, AFTER we put in reserves and walk-ons. All for a few garbage points...which is what that move was, garbage.

Or Herd coach was sending a message to his players.

Since you're playing devil's advocate here, what message do you suppose that would be?

I'm just curious because I'm on the side of using your starters to full court press walk on's when the game is in hand as being a pretty low move by any coach.

If he wasn't happy with how they played, then maybe the message is when you play like this, I'm leaving you in the game and making you press until the very bitter end.
