What about this new Fox Sports "College Basketball Crown" tournament and it's timing directly vs the final four? It got bigger name teams than the NIT (which has been around almost 90 years) by awarding Name, Image, and Likeness payments to the winning teams.

The dystopian future of college basketball has arrived. What happens when teams decide they would rather play in the CBC for the $$ than in the big dance??

The article is pretty accurate to me. The current state of college basketball has just surfaced things that were always there, and forced people to reckon with the fact that the marketing narrative the NCAA and college basketball sold to them has been nonsense for a very, very long time.

Nobody to blame but the people in charge at schools and the NCAA who built the model and insisted upon it for decades after it had become illogical.

I completely support the portal & NIL. One casualty however is excitement for the casual fan of the NCAA tournament. Predictable winners of any sporting event don't make for exciting TV.
