I know we don’t have Captain Chaos and Brown, but we just don’t matchup with EMU. We don’t have a Billingsley or Nelson.

And we have no chance for a Cleveland miracle without Brown. Nothing comes easy for this Ohio squad. By far the most frustrating Ohio hoops season I’ve ever watched.

We lost three games this season to directional Michigan schools.

And now we have to play Clayton and Brown (if he can go) Friday night when we could have rested both. All because we couldn’t beat Western or Eastern down the stretch.

Going through some more scenarios, I think this is right:

Beat Toledo = 3 seed. Regardless of Kent/EMU result, we play #6 Toledo again on Thursday.

Lose to Toledo + Kent beats EMU = 5 seed vs #4 Toledo

Lose to Toledo + EMU beats Kent - this is really interesting as there would be a 4-way tie at 10-8. We would be 1-5, so would be at the bottom = 6 seed. Kent and EMU would be at the top of the heap at 4-2, but EMU wins that one since they have a better record vs #2 Miami. So we play #3 EMU.


TLDR: we will be playing one of this week’s opponents, EMU or Toledo, to start the MAC tournament. Which is better?

I think, moreso than most years, there are some funky team matchups that don't match the records.

Ohio-EMU
Kent-Western
Akron-Ohio
Ball-Miami

Yes, some of those teams split, but still tough matchups despite records.

This isn’t the SEC.
Though unlikely in either league, I think it more possible in the MAC where any team can beat any team on any given night. At the rate we are going we could be the 7th seed, and yet we string three games together like our Akron and Miami games and we could win it all. Again, not likely, but possible. I agree with Marty on this one.

Just got back from Athens:

1. EMU is a terrible matchup for us, although we don't help ourselves when Vic picks up 3 quick fouls, Clayton becomes allergic to anything inside of 19 feet, AJ Brown is out, and we refuse to play Ayden Evans for more than 90 seconds. There's no way you can play 4 guarsds against that kind of size. Hell, it was Nelson against James in the paint the first couple possessions - terrible recipe.

2. EMU just beat us with toughness and hustle. They wanted it more. End of story. They wanted contact. They wanted a street fight. They wanted to talk, flop, and be animated. They came in our house and beat us up. We were lucky to be in the game at the half.

3. Nelson is a ballplayer. He was the most impactful player in the Convo tonight. He was everywhere. Clearing space, distributing, dominating in the post, jawing with Hadaway, jawing with fans. He had EMU on his back. I was impressed. Loved his intensity and emotion.

4. Someone said Boals got out-coached. I'm not sure that's right. EMU should have beat us by 30. I would almost say Heath was losing control of the game (while his team was losing their cool) and couldn't pull away earlier. Our players got out-played - but Boals certainly didn't help tonight.

5. One thing I couldnt't figure out - EMU successfully ran the same press break like 4-5 times in a row in the 2nd half, and we couldn't figure it out to get a turnover. Part of the break is a 40 foot pass into the far corner, which makes it ripe for a turnover. Mind numbing.

We should do anything possible to avoid these guys in Cleveland. Akron is a MUCH better matchup for us with those smaller, guard heavy lineups that they throw out there. Brutal game.

Henry (#30) is one of those players that really gets under your skin. Could hardly stand him and his antics. Wish we had him. :)

Even being down AJB, this felt like a game we should have won. Especially being at home and on senior night.

EMU is definitely a matchup nightmare, but its players played like they wanted it (a spot in the MAC tourney) more.

What’s wild, is mathematically we could finish an even .500 this season. Which I wouldn’t put out of the realm of possibilities. Would be on brand with how this season has gone.

Yeah I don't see how this one falls on Boals. They came in our house and wanted it more, plain and simple. We knew they would score plenty of points, they have 3 guys in the top 15 in league play for ppg. We just don't have enough options without Brown in there to keep up with that, so agreed, huge matchup issues.

Not having Hadaway has flipped this season upside down. Searls is a great backup but having to rely on him was never going to be a long-term success and it really showed last night.

How do we only get Clayton 5 shots? He played 37 min. Maybe that falls on Boals but without Brown, he should have gotten at least 15 shots up.

We are 3-9 when Clayton gets less than 10 shot attempts and 12-3 when he gets at least 10.

Clayton simply isn't mobile enough nor does he have the low post game to be a guy who you can give the ball to and let him go to work. Not like BVP or Carter. It's frustrating that these areas haven't developed over four years. He usually needs to be set up by someone else to score. I thought EMU did well with switches and ball screen defense to discourage a few plays that looked designed to be alley oops and they also stayed tethered to him when a guard got in deep an AJ likes to lose his defender when they're not looking.

Easy. Because AJ did the on-ball screen and pop to the 3 point line followed by standing at the 3pt line for the rest of the possession. EMU hedged the screen and doubled AJ every time he touched it on the perimeter except for the one open 3 he got in transition.

They forced someone else to beat them. Down 2 starters it was a great strategy.

Mitchell went 4-17 from the field. EJ4 2-10 and E26 1-5. That's 7-32 for 21.9%.

Searls (3-4) and Pavs (8-9) needed to shoot more.

Because Clayton only wants to take one type of shot and that's a 3PA.

In those losses, he shot 19 2PA's in comparison to 36 3PA's. He's taken just 7 2PA's in the last 4 losses.

It's just not a balanced and sustainable offensive approach given how streaky he is already from deep.

I don't think that's on Boals. He can't force AJC to take certain shots.

Can honestly say that I have no idea who we even match-up with here.

Without Hadaway, now without AJB, we lose a giant offensive spark and our shallow bench is a puddle.

I don't have high hopes for a tournament run, as we just don't have the healthy players or the depth to make a run. Didn't develop a bench early, now we don't have one at all. AJC is hobbled. Elliott is inconsistent. Elmore isn't the same player. AJS isn't the same player. Evans isn't getting PT. Searls can't carry a team.

Unless AJB comes back with a fiery vengeance, we might be making a quick exit in Cleveland. Tough scene.

He can figure out another way to get him looks other than the pick and pop? I'm not an x and o expert by any means but I feel like that's not the only way to manufacture an open shot for him.

I agree, unfortunately, with this. And it sucks because we are going to waste Reef's final year. Dude has been a leader all year and deserves a run. I also worry about keeping Pavs. He has shown a proclivity to seeking greener pastures. I would like him to stay and hope he does. I just can't tell because he is so even-keeled.

These two thoughts sum it up pretty well. There was a sequence last night where we basically had four point guards on the floor with a big (Reef, Sheldon, Elliott, Pav and Clayton). We're not gonna do squat in Cleveland with that kind of lineup. I wish I could count how many times I saw Elliott mixing it up in the paint more than our actual bigs were. I get it that Evans might not be ready, but cmon Jeff. We are undersized and when one of the other two is in foul trouble you have to play him.

I don't necessarily disagree, but AJC hasn't really put himself in the position to get other looks most of the season or for his career. Could Boals enforce that? For sure, but we just haven't really seen it.

Sheldon getting the same minutes...if not more minutes than E2...will never make sense to me. Granted...I understand the Miami game because E2 was sick.

Sheldon made some plays last night which was good to see, but one of the big turning points last night was down 51-50....Sheldon missed a wide-open three. EMU then goes on a 10-5 spurt and in the final 14 minutes of the game we never had a possession to tie the game or take the lead. That was in my opinion the biggest possession of the game and a three was taken by a guy who I believe was 1 for his last 17 or 2 for his last 17 from three. Granted, Sheldon made a three late with under 45 seconds to go...but it didn't matter at that point....game was over. Sheldon makes that shot to go up 53-51....who knows what happens from there. And I'm not pinning last night on Sheldon.....just look at Reef/Elmore shooting....but man that was a big moment in the game.

Pavs is someone I can't really get a feel on either and I was thinking that last night. I also don't know what greener pasture for him would exist, maybe a lateral move to another mid-major.

Our roster construction is so piss poor it needs to unclog itself one way or the other.

And no, not advocating for Pavs to leave. However, some guys do for the sake of next season being better than this season.
