Have seen a lot of Miami this year.

13-4

7 wins in a row

5-0 in conference

In year three, Steele has it going on. The Redhawks have a bunch of quality shooters and they are connected on offense. The make-up of the team reminds me of some old Charlie Coles teams of the past. Miami is a problem.
________

Meanwhile, something is not right with Kent. 3 home conference losses in five games??? Something has to be going on behind the scenes with Sendy’s crew?

Not a good team on the national stage, but definitely a good MAC team. Probably the MAC's best shooting team at 50% from the field and 40% from 3. Someone on the Akron game thread named UA's Sharron Young as the best frosh in the MAC. However, I'm beginning to think Miami's 6-8 Brant Byers is the leading candidate for that award. I'm also a big fan of 6-6 Ian Elmer's all-around game.

I’ve watched, it’s a solid team. Miami is now ranked in mid-major polls, fwiw. Apparently doing very well with NIL funding.

Our once upon a time portal target Antwone Woolfolk gives them the paint presence to spread the floor with Kraft, Suder, and Elmer.

Then gets outscored 16-3 to start the 2nd half.

Bobcats should have no reservations about mixing it up with the Redhawks.

No matter what happens the rest of the season you would think that Groce is going to get another shot at a major conference school if he wants it. But he might just decide that he’s done that once and the grass isn’t always greener.

If the stars aligned and he was available the next time we had an opening would we want him back?

Personally I would say no. It rarely ever works out when a successful coach returns to a place he had success at previously.

That may be true, but I can cite at least one example to the contrary right off the top of my head in another sport. I'm thinking Bill Snyder the football coach at Kansas State who retired; the program went south; they hired him back; and the program rebounded. I'm not advocating this one way or the other, but it does work out sometimes, even if you are correct that it usually doesn't.

Absolutely.

But I hope we don't ever have to cross that bridge.

if we did bring him back we know for sure he would not be using the i cant get big name teams to play us excuse. he would also have to start recruiting rim protector type players who are good rebounders.

I would take Groce back in a heartbeat. I’m probably romanticizing his tenure but in my opinion he was the best Coach in the history of Ohio basketball. Worked the recruiting trail, knew how to manage the post-season, was sufficient in the X’s and O’s, and built good staffs. 100% I would take him back tomorrow.

Would add that he plays a style that gives you a chance against anyone.

Based on what I've seen from Akron so far, they're better than anyone in this league. Ohio might be the only team, with Clayton healthy, that could match up with them, and that's even a reach right now.

John just seems to get it done. I'm not sure how, but he seems like he gets more out of what he's got than anyone else, and it's not close right now. How he's still at Akron is a bit perplexing for me.

John works hard in recruiting, always has a good staff, and gets enough out of his guys in terms of development and the X’s and O’s. We are missing at least two of those things.

+2 But I'm sure we'll see Bobcat Love's money soon. Money talks and you know what walks.

I'm guessing Love has been busy advising the president on the rationale for imposing tariffs on your top trading partners.

Or how bad is Toledo defense recently?

Lose to Kent by 40 and give up 87 to Buffalo.

Are there players injured or are they just playing with no intensity?

Toledo seems to be on a free fall. Probably means this is the year they finally do well in Cleveland and win it.

BACK TO THE ORIGINAL QUESTION ...

With dawn cracking on the MAC Tournament ... I'd say Miami is pretty good, second-best offense to Akron, but a bit more suspect on road/neutral environments.

I'd say Kent is not nearly as bad as they were in January, although still a bit shaky in spots, but also a team nobody wants to face, outside of Akron.
