At this first game with the students back from break, OHIO sports marketing is introducing a new core group of the O-Zone and have named it after our Dan. (Not sure how much info I should put out there, but do know there will be a video shown at 6:50 prior to the game.)
We are very touched that OHIO Athletics still holds Dan's contribution to "being loud and faithful" in such high regard. We are looking forward to attending the game.

Boy I hope it works. Using his name to bring the student section back to relevance...I can't think of a way to honor him that he would enjoy more than that.

Thanks so much for telling us about this. I usually arrive at the games just before tip-off. I'll try to get there a little early to see the video. Honoring Dan this way is very special for all of us, and it must be much more so for family. Go OHIO!

Thanks for posting Alan. Dan was one-of-a-kind and I hope his memory provides the spark the Convo desperately needs. I'll be there early Tuesday +5.

Growing up as a youngster in Athens and sitting in the 6th man section was special. I really hope those involved in the O-Zone, if there are any left, to get involved. I have attended many games at home in recent years, The Old Zone sounds great. remember most of Coach's kids haven't seen a legit, exited student section. A former Ohio coach told me a home court advantage in the MAC should be worth 10 points.

Hi Mrs. Lowe,

Good to hear from you again. I hope this new group does justice to Dan and what he built. Thanks for helping to keep his spirit alive. I hope to one day cross paths with you and your husband again. Take care.

Does anyone know if they filled the 100 spots of this group?

Hope the next coach can bring the student enthusiasm back to the Convo. Damn shame it's all gone after what Dan did to ignite it.

Is it me, or do we always lay an egg on the games when there's some sort of extra push to get students to the Convo?

Great video tonight. Had a good first attempt at a REAL O-zone of the past that Dan would be part of. Looks like older guy that has been front row - center court that has been taking there place may have been recruited to "coach" them. Sure hope so. Anyone know who he is??

Without seeing a picture, it's possible that the older guy you are referring to is the dad of one of the other original O-Zone members from back in the early 2000s as I know he was in the room with the students prior to their introduction last night as his son and Dan were good friends in college. He and his wife would come to a lot of the games in that era and have food and such for a lot of us before the game. He's been a high school coach all over Central Ohio for fooball and softball so has given a lot of pep talks.

His son has since moved away but he and his wife are from Columbus and are diehard Bobcat fans, with season tickets to football and basketball (pretty sure he comes down for a lot of hockey, too).

Not just students, but I have noted that as well. Every special day seems to be accompanied by an egg laying game. I hope that doesn't happen on February 2nd.

It looked like 40-50 members of the crew...

The best seats in the arena to D1 basketball, free food and drink before every game, free shirt, and even a gift card to Chipotle...and out of 20 some thousand students, we get about 40 willing to do it.

This was a great idea by the department to help kickstart something, not to mention a great way to honor Dan. And I really do appreciate the students that did sign up and come...there was a little glimmer of hope that we have enough there to get something going.

That being said it is all very discouraging. And no I don't think a better team would make a much bigger difference (unless it was a ranked / powerhouse situation like Buffalo currently). It is what it is.
