Remember when Bowling Green University was known for it's campus stalking squirrels?

Remember when Ohio University was know as a respectable Mid-Major Division I men's basketball program?

Bowling Green still has the squirrels.

OU has not played Division I men's basketball in 2 years.

Now 0-2 in MAC play and staring at 0-5. Our program is not even on par right now with the likes of Northern Illinois, Miami and Bowling Green. Did you think 5 years ago that this would ever be possible? For those of you who follow the program seriously and don't think the #SaulBall era has been anything but an epic failure, I just don't know what to say anymore. This goes well beyond success in March. We are now a team struggling to get out of the bottom of the MAC. That's what happens when you recruit a handful of guys who should be suiting up for Wisconsin Stevens-Point and Ohleone CC. We quit in the last 23 seconds against Northern Illinois and now lose by 19 points to Bowling Green. This is a complete embarrassment and can't end soon enough.

At this point it doesn't matter, but if he did, I wouldn't mind...but I doubt it happens.

Saul should be fired tomorrow. 5 years and we are the worst team in the mac. 500k for this garbage team. I could less if half this team transfers. There are no gary trent or dj coopers on this team.

I'm thinking about giving up my ESPN+ subscription. They're beginning to not be worth the $5 a month.

Nobody is being the floor leader. Just throwing the ball around in the hope that somebody gets open for a shot. No sixth man like we've always had. BG outscored us 43-11 in bench points. 11 assists on 26 makes; BG had 16 on 31. Little emotion out there tonight.

12-2 Toledo's getting hammered by Buffalo (105-69 with 3:41 to go). I can imagine what the Bulls will do to us.

Yes. It's only the people who naively convinced themselves that 3 NCAA tournament wins had somehow transformed our program forever that didn't.

We had some fun wins. And then lost two coaches to big programs in no time at all. We aren't special. There's nothing about a single Sweet 16 run that made us immune to this. We're a MAC team like the rest of them, nothing more.

Yep^^^^. The lack of talent and development of players on this roster is stomach turning.

We lost tonight because of defensive rotations and no go to moves offense. We don’t have enough athletes to compete especially when we don’t have a system that puts the opponent at a competitive disadvantage, like you saw at Princeton, Wisconsin or Wisconsin Green Bay. BG made tough shots in the first half and in the second half they made open (easy) shots. BG is a team full of newcomers with a new coach and they thrashed us. This should definitely be cause for concern.

I'd suggest against it if you're a MAC fan.

Currently watching 2 MAC games (Akron at CMU and EMU at BSU) in overtime. A little reprieve after suffering through Ohio's loss.

I bet that's not what Schaus was thinking when handed the keys over to Saul and gave him 500K per year.

I can't recall Russ and Rob ever sounding so flummoxed and demoralized recapping the game before Coach Phillips came on the air. Coach Phillips seemed at a loss as well. This isn't rocket science. Every game we have a lead and every game we go down by double digits which proves we have the talent to be in these games. If injuries and lack of talent keep you from ever being in a game, that is one thing. However despite those injuries and supposed lack of talent, we seem to have had the lead in many games and then it is if we are hypnotized to play poor defense and shoot poorly. I have seen the late Coach Charlie Coles do far more with less talent that we have on the court.

This Bobcat team, because of injuries certainly doesn't have the talent that we old timers remember from days gone down (to quote Gerry Rafferty.) However, to throw in another 1970s Gerry Rafferty song, we aren't getting it right next time. As a matter of fact, we are regressing. From what Coach Phillips said, it doesn't appear as if he can put his finger on it. His hope that a win can turn into two and maybe 4 in a row sounds nice, but he gave no specifics on how that might occur. The administration hasn't announced their verdict yet, but a few more games like this and we might get the fastest verdict ever rendered on a Bobcat basketball coach.

Ignorance at its finest.
I'm speaking more from an institution standpoint. Ohio University should be better than Bowling Green State University in every metric that matters, sports results included.
I know what you meant, and I stand by response to it. I expect better coming from an Ohio student or alum - but that’s ignorance on my part. With your logic, I guess many (non-Ohio University students or alums) probably feel Miami University should never lose to Ohio University in anything then, right? You know, like you said, in every metric than matters, sports results included. SMH...

I bet he was thinking "I can't believe I'm hiring our third coach in 4 years because getting this right three times in a row is really hard." But I guarantee you Schaus wasn't naive enough to think a single Sweet 16 run guaranteed anything.

And you know what? He hired a coach that everybody likes a whole lot and that everybody here was excited about. It hasn't worked out, and that happens with jobs sometimes. Let's handle it with some class.

So he's back to run out the string on the five years, which was just discussed at length earlier today on here, and we're this far in, and now we should fire him tomorrow?

Have a couple more....

Ok, I didn’t see the game. So Iooking at the box score Saul played 9 players tonight vs. his usual 7-8 man rotation. Starters: Taylor, Preston and Cowart gotta step it up on offense. Vander Plas in for 25 mins and only scoring 3 pts. and 0-5 at the three. We are not a threat in the Mac. Pull the plug on Sauls contract this ship sinking fast. Need a coach that will motivate the players. Current situation not working.

That's not really the whole story. Check out the play-by-play portion of the stats starting around the 9 minute mark of 2H and you'll see a clearer picture of what happened.

Agreed. No need for pitchforks. It's all over anyway.

He's a good person who tried and failed. In two short months, we'll start a search.

Ray Harper won...
84% of the games he coached at Kentucky Wesleyan
85% of the games he coached at Oklahoma City
59% of the games he coached at Western Kentucky
over 60% at Jacksonville State including a recent win at Belmont, a 2 point loss at West Virginia, 23 wins last season, etc.

Unless it has to be a younger guy, here is a good candidate.

I agree. I use the heck out of ESPN3 /ESPN+ during basketball season.

Speaking of the games tonight, how about Balls losing at home after a good win at Toledo? And NIU winning big at Miami?

Well, BG does beat Ohio in the number of man-made hills, flat space, wind turbines, and concerts by Bob Dylan. Not sure if those are considered victories though:)
You didn't mention campus ugliness, coed beauty, and nearness to Toledo.

[If you haven't heard the old story about the Ohio-Michigan war over where the border line should be drawn, here it is in nutshell: Ohio and Michigan sent troops to the border. Michigan withdrew its troops without firing a shot, and declared victory. Why did Michigan say they won: 'cause Ohio had to keep Toledo!]
Campus ugliness- yes I believe BGSU campus has better ugliness. Coed beauty- definitely, my wife and I are graduates of BGSU so I believe there was a high level of coed beauty. It isn’t just my opinion, it is a fact that BG wins the nearness to Toledo battle hands down.

Given the fact coach Phillips not coming back seems to be a fait accompli,I would hope O.U. has already started a search.
