ATHENS, Ohio -- CBS Sports Network has selected the Ohio men's basketball team's Mid-American Conference home matchup against East Division foe Bowling Green in February as their MAC Wildcard Selection.

The Bobcats and Falcons will now square off on Friday, Feb. 22. The contest was originally scheduled to be played on Saturday, Feb. 23. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET inside the Convocation Center and will be seen on CBS Sports Network.

Yipee! I was going to have to miss this game because I had to be at a meeting in Columbus. Now, I can go. Usually don't like these last minute moves. But, this one has my full support! :-)

Not more than 1 hour before this was announced, I finalized plans with a friend to take our sons to this game on Saturday, their first trip to the Convo. $&#!

I was in the midst of trying to finalize plans for this yesterday into today/tomorrow. Ugh. I honestly don't understand why these damn networks can't either a) just choose their games and live with them, or b) give more notice of what game they want (a month or more). I can't possibly imagine the ratings are that drastically different, but I'd love to truly know if someone knows how to compare.

And for me, it's not that I mind Friday games, because I don't. It's that I make plans for a date with my wife and friends, and then 20 days before the game, the MAC and it's TV "partners" (gag) change the day of the game. If it was Friday to start with, it's no big deal to me.

MAC schools need TV money to stay relevant in football and basketball. But, in order to get the TV money the MAC must play football and basketball games when students and fans simply will not attend.

Kind of bizarre.

I think plenty of students and fans would attend Friday nights, Sunday afternoons, etc. It's a matter of the fact that people make plans, and then TV screws up those plans. For example, my buddy I was making plans with for this specific game is a BG grad. He organized a group of 12-15 to go up to BG this weekend for BG vs UB. Then the game got yanked from them for Friday night. Bottom line is, there has to be a better way, but the MAC is beholden to the TV networks and just does whatever they want, so no change will happen.

The have a soft hold on Friday nights and Saturday at noon as a "MAC Wildcard" on their TV schedule in February.

https://www.cbspressexpress.com/cbs-sports/releases/view?...

They wait to see what is the best potential match-up about 20 days out and choose that game.

That's the contract the league negotiated.

It's sad, but it's almost the ONLY way this league gets on national TV in February. ESPN only does it on Friday nights (3 times) .... because they refuse to put MAC games on TV on Tuesday or the wknd, P6 games only.

It's not ideal for planning purposes (I too was considering an Athens trip for BG on Saturday) ... but if it gets the MAC on national TV during basketball, it's really their only option.

It sucks, because even CBSSN is sporadic with MAC games in February. Wildcards on both 2/1 and 2/2 ... then nothing until 2/22 & 2/23 and 3/1.

Oddly, this is the most exposure the league has gotten on national TV in years. So, while it's a pain in the ass .... it's probably for the best to get some eyeballs on the league.

Now .... don't get me started on football :-)

I wonder how much actual negotiation went into that....

CBSSN & ESPN: Here are our terms, take it or leave it! We have C-USA on the phone if you say no.
MAC: (shrugs shoulders) OK. You want our first born too? Would that help?

Here's the real bottom line frustration for me: Increasingly, it's more and more difficult and/or desirable for me to get to games in Athens because of this nonsense. For me, this is another thing on the list also that decreases lack of desire to increase my investment into tickets, etc. But yeah, #MACtion baby. (rolls eyes).

Meanwhile, I can buy 5 game packs to UC, or cheap seats to OSU/UD, and count on the fact that the game is the time it says it is on the schedule two months from now 90% of the time. I can see better basketball, in a far better arena, with a far better gameday experience. My how times have changed. 6-7 years ago, I never would have uttered these words. At this point, half the time I'm coming just to enjoy Jackie O's, who is always open at 11am, reliably, every Saturday.

I can buy that MAC Football on Tuesday on ESPN2 is exposure that actually does help the league and recruiting.

I'm way, way more skeptical about the impact of basketball on a Friday at 6:30PM on CBS Sports network.

I also want OHIO and the MAC to be near the top of mid-major basketball in all things. So..... I guess I shouldn't complain? (But, complaining is what the internet was invented for, right?.)

Honestly I probably would have gone to more games if they played on Friday evenings. The 2 pm Saturday games suck because I typically wouldn't wake up until noon and then the hangover really made it tough to sit through those games. With a 6:30pm start that's a perfect pregame activity, just need to fill a flask.

The MAC is pretty much there at this point. Basketball championship in NBA arena. Football championship in NFL stadium. Low travel costs. Best TV deal of the mid major conferences.

Which leads me to wonder: Does a team and/or the MAC have the right to refuse on some of these dates? How does that work? I'm guessing that must be the case.

Another anecdote....my daughter, son in law, and two grandsons (ages 6 and 4) last season had plans to come to a game in Athens, but very close to game day the game was moved from Saturday to Friday for television. So they couldn't come to the game. Ended up having to take them to our game in Millett Hall.

This season, we had plans for them to come to the BGSU game on Feb 23. Same result.

My grandsons love the Bobcats, and were able to attend a game two years ago. But this yielding of all control of the schedule to CBSSN and ESPN is making it almost impossible to plan family outings on which you can depend.

Bingo. This is my biggest bitch. Schedule the games on Friday from the start. Come up with a clause related to how good of a match-up you (CBSSN or ESPN) chose from the start and you get to change it if one of the teams is REALLY bad. Otherwise, pick a damn time, and stick to it. I'd bet in many cases, the ratings aren't all that different anyway.

For me, my BG buddy now can't go because of previous Friday plans. For him, it's the second game in February he'll miss because of TV. But #MACtion is sooo great. Makes me sick. Stuff like this confirms that my level of donation and commitment isn't likely to increase anytime soon unless I physically move to Athens.

Agree. But that's life in the MAC.

Leadership has made it loud and clear. They DO NOT care about the local fan bases of each school. It's all about money. TV revenue ... national TV exposure.

They just expect the fans/alumni to drink it up when in fact attendance is awful at almost every game outside of Buffalo in hoops some nights.

The MAC league office is nothing but a whore. Do anything for money. Period.

Not sure what the end game is. They'll never have enough clout to break this mold.

It's a P5/6 world in CFB & CBB and it's only getting worse. I guess they're in survival mode and they feel this is their best course of action to stay relevant.

My response next year is going to be this: I'm looking into mini-packs for OSU hoops, UC hoops, and UD hoops if they'd offer such an option. When they schedule a game that I make plans with friends and family for, the date sticks. And I might just reduce myself to two season tickets from the six I had two years ago. I've felt fed up for the last two years, and it's not even tied that much to on-court performance.

Feel same way .... especially for football. Incredibly difficult to get to Athens from Dublin on a weeknight.

And with lack of Saturday home games, it makes it really hard to justify season tickets when I can just go with game to game prices.

Not to mention they rarely play anyone of consequence in Athens ... and the in-game experience isn't awesome enough to get excited for.

It's a tough sell.

I'm sure if hoops was legitimately a MAC contender I'd be more apt to make the trip. But this program is below average right now and is a hard watch. Makes justifying a trip down harder.

Football is a whole other discussion. They're a contender but they don't care about local fans after October.

I'd add Xavier to your list. That's a great arena and Big East hoops is a good watch. I could never bring myself to supporting Ohio State ... plus that arena is a boring atmosphere. Way too big and cavernous.

Xavier for me, as a UC fan (dad is an alum), is out of the question. I do want to go to one game there though sometime, as I've never been in there. OSU is convenient - 15 mins from work, 20ish from home. Also, they offer a cheap ticket option I just learned about that I plan on checking out next year. I vehemently dislike the football team and OSU football fan culture, but I'll root for the basketball team on occasion, and I really like Coach Holtmann. And, I like watching entertaining college basketball, which they generally provide. Agree on the arena though - it's a little void of character. But, on the plus side, they'll let you leave from any exit when it comes time to leave, and they have restrooms painted since the internet was established. ;)

Ohio Football, for me, as long as I can get 3 home games, is well, well worth the money. I honestly don't even care who they play. I'm there for tailgating, fall in Athens, hanging with friends, and then lastly, the football.

With basketball, it's more related to WHEN games are scheduled and then this mickey mouse moving games stuff after I've made plans that's my issue. I'm enough of a fan of mid-major college hoops that games like a good Radford or Iona team, are more than enough of a sell for me. And, I can and do come on weeknights/Friday's, but I buy tickets primarily to plan on spending Saturday's in Athens through the season. I get unhappy when that's taken away, and the social aspect of it with friends gets screwed up so that 100,000 people can watch it on CBSSN or ESPNU, or worse, ESPN3.

Beyond that, related to basketball, its the way game day's are run, and how 7-8 year upper bowl season ticket holders are suddenly treated the same as anyone who walks up day of game. And how the fan can't walk up to, and into the concourse in any spot they want to walk to their seat in the upper bowl without getting harassed by 3 security people when there's a "crowd" of 3500 people. And how there's rarely enough light outside during night games....you get the picture. They don't seem to pay attention to, or do a good enough job with little details, and unless you're giving $500 and up a year, they don't seem to think you're important. And that, in my opinion, starts at the top, which why I'm increasingly critical of Jimmy.
