I didn't think I would ever see the day when Jay Bilas gives the MAC this much love. Two MAC teams in the Field of 68 and Buffalo in the Top 10 (even after the Northern Illinois loss.) This might qualify as a minor miracle!

Parting the Red Sea was a minor miracle compared to this.

This is the case of the rising tide lifts all boats. We've said it for years that we needed one program needs to step up and be dominant and the residual effects would benefit the whole league. Buffalo is lifting everyone. That being said Toledo doesn't have a chance in hell of making the tournament without winning in Cleveland. They are 3-4 against top 150 teams (KenPom), without a single top 100 win. Come tournament time Bilas will have the 10th place ACC team in ahead of them.

Unfortunately, Bilas is saying nothing about 2 MAC teams making the 68 team tournament. He is just saying what the 68 best teams are. Much lower rated teams from the lower rated conferences will get the their automatic bids. Nothing to see here, but a little MAC love.

If Buffalo continues their current trajectory (perhaps just 1 more MAC loss), I don't see how they can't be an at-large. However, that assumes Buffalo losing in the MAC Tournament. If Buffalo wins the tournament, no way we see 2 bids.

in a slightly related feature, Pat Forde's argument on why the OVC is a two bid league this year. The last time that happened? 1987. He also trots out the "Who would you rather see in the tourney - a second team from a lower league or a tenth team from a power conference?" question. Perhaps there's some momentum building for this concept.

Bout d*** time. There are years where there are some loaded mid-majors and unfortunately run the break of losing in-league, like everyone else does. Last I checked, not many teams go undefeated in high school ball either. Doesn't stop them from getting rated highly for just losing a game.

Sorry to vent, but back on topic.

Hope this is the year a mid-major conference like the OVC or the MAC gets two teams in. I ain't holding my breath but hope this is the year it happens when a conference not named the Missouri Valley or the Mountain West get two teams in.

Exactly, Buffalo is the only team who has put together a strong at-large resume. The MAC is only a two but league if they lose. I'm not sure this is really the sign of progress for the league some think it is. It's not as if there are two teams that deserve to be in the field no-matter what.

Totally agree. That said, Toledo is a pretty solid team and would be a threat simply on their guard play. Not to give hometown bias in there, but definitely can play worth a lick.

The MAC is having the best year it's had in a while, and that's not just because of Buffalo. That said, Buffalo is the only at-large possible team. Hopefully the whole league can continue the trend upward, and if so, maybe the MAC could legitimately have two NCAA-worthy teams in a couple years.

If you read the article Bilas basically says this under the Toledo selection. Saying something like Buffalo is great but the MAC has many formidable teams that could bounce them, Toledo being his pick of the day.
