I keep hearing the “we’re snakebit by injuries” and “we haven’t seen what SP could do with all his recruits.” So we were 14-17 and didn’t make Cleveland last year and currently were in dead last in the MAC East. So hypothetically, where do you think we’re at if Gollon and Dartis are healthy? IMO, we’re better but still in the same general boat. Is there people who look at our current squad in its entirety and think, “we get all these guys healthy and we’re golden moving forward?”

I don't necessarily think Ohio is "golden" with everyone on the squad healthy, but it does give them a hell of a lot more options. The positions of the injuries have been critical. Unlike football where you have 85 on scholarship, one or two injuries in basketball is a killer. Especially when it's guys who are expected to play huge minutes.

2017-18: JC and BVP being injured meant that our bigs to rely on were Doug (rebounder and glass protector) and Kevin Mickle (transfer who was widely unproven coming into the year). That's it. Any time they got in foul trouble, Gavin Block was playing in the paint. Not exactly ideal.

2018-19: Ohio gets all the bigs back from injury, and it has shown. Rebounding is much, much better than last year and Carter provides an offensive game in the paint. Buuuuuuuuuuuut, now the two best shooters on the roster, Gollon and Dartis, are down. The defense sags in to protect the paint and surrounds DT/JC anytime they touch the ball. Kick-outs aren't as effective because the best shooters aren't there. And TK/Preston are forced to try and make plays they shouldn't be making, TK especially.

You have to admit we'd be just a tick better with Jordy's shooting ability. He's one of the most accurate shooters in Ohio history for a reason. It may not be enough to compete with Buffalo, but at least they'd be trending in a better direction and the offense would be more fluid.

Agree with you on this. Not only would we be better on offense because of their shooting, but TK, Preston, and Cowart would be forced to play major minutes with those two guys on the floor 25-30 mins a game, which likely, by default, cuts down on the turnovers and bad shots. Bottom line, they wouldn't be as good as the top 3 teams in the MAC, but they wouldn't be one of the worst either.

I could be wrong, but I don't remember one article from Arkley this season where he really dives into Saul and how his contract situation is affecting the team. I give the POST student writer credit for at least going there.

https://www.thepostathens.com/article/2019/02/ohio-mens-b...
I applaud Pete for being willing to go there, and give kudos to Jason and Ben for answering the uncomfortable question. At this point, it has to have an effect of some kind. The person I'd like to see anyone start questioning on this topic is Schaus, and why he allowed it to happen.
$$$$$$$$$
I don't disagree with you. I'd just like to see his feet put to the fire a little by those who cover the team. Never hurts them to ask the questions. Maybe eventually he'll answer them.

I as applaud Pete for "going there". Also think Arkley needs to in the "pressers", or a one on one, with Schaus go there also. I have no idea how we can recruit with ZERO idea on who the coach is next year??
Good point, I agree. Another check mark on the negative side of the ledger for Jimbo for me.

A quote from the ESPN article "He has proved he can win big at Ohio."

How has this been proven? More a question for the person who wrote this article.

So you think with Carter last year and Gollon/Dartis this year, we’re Top 4 in the league and in at least one of the last two tournament championships games—
or whatever you define as acceptable? Not just, “we’d be better” as I get that, but you honestly believe we’d be at where we’d like to be at this juncture.

Agreed. 2015/2016 was his best season in terms of record and post season, with making to the third round of the CBI. Maybe that was the basis for the comment(s)?

First, no, I don't think we're top-4 in the league. I do think we're top half with Gollon and Dartis this year. And I do think they would have been measurably better last year with a full year of Carter, plus completely healthy years from Dartis and Mickle. Top-4? Or maybe in the MAC Finals? I don't have a crystal ball to answer those questions. I do know this team would be a whole lot more fun to watch, and more competitive this year, if those two guys were healthy for the entirety of the 2018-19 season.

As for "where we'd like to be at this juncture", I can't answer that either. There are waaaaayyyy too many opinions around here on where we'd like to be. The expectations, as noted about 672 times in the last year, range from realistic, to wildly unrealistic expectations in some people's cases.

Arkley has fallen into the trap of becoming a de facto employee of the institution/program he's supposed to be covering.

He's a good writer, but there's a reason he's still stuck in Athens, Ohio, after all these years. Too comfortable being a PR guy for his coaching friends.
He is getting owned by the Post in terms of beat coverage. Pretty pathetic.

And tonight he tweets how Ohio didn't quit during crunch time down 20 with 75 seconds left. It's such a joke the lack of reporting he's doing on this issue.

Cut 20 to 7 in about 2 minutes. What part about "didn't quit" do you object to?

And if you listened to post game Russ' first comment was on no quitting.

Did you watch the game? If the first thing you think about is that 14-1 run during garbage time...then you can have it. The game was over. My point is that Arkley is all puppies and rainbows with his coverage. The Post has owned him this year on the coaching change that is looming.

Many people have voiced a concern about all the injuries Saul has had to endure. This may be true. It was also true for Solich. The difference is that Solich still managed the team into having winning seasons.

That last 1:45 was strange - it's like someone flipped a switch. Eastern was up 20 and had already started the bus and suddenly we get hot. Would have been interesting when it got to 7 if we hadn't turned the ball over.

BINGO!!!!!! When Dorian Brown went down in our Buffalo game two years ago....we had to roll out different backs. Unfortunately we missed the MAC championship because of Akron loss. But injuries are injuries...its part of the game. A good coach knows how to rotate and get the best out of his players. I've never known Ohio Basketball to be this soft! The alums of the past would be traumatized by this years play. No passion or chemistry. Hire the girls coach!

This is the best post on this board. Injuries can be an excuse for Solich not winning MAC Championships, but can't be for Saul? Winning seasons or not, some of those Solich seasons were not as successful as they should have been.

Can you not hold everyone to the same standard?

And the point of these two post is what? You can flip over to the football board and find many people who want a new football coach too.

Huh, I didn't need Arkley to tell me this. I made the very same remark to the people sitting next to me during that late run, "At least the kids aren't quitting." Like Alan said it was close to getting real interesting. Why they couldn't play with that intensity just a few minutes earlier, I'm not sure, and is a good question for discussion. But, I think Arkley's tweet reflects the thinking of most OHIO fans who stayed to the bitter end. What do you want him to do? Should he say something like, "Just another example of too little, too late, for the lame duck coach who is just waiting out his time till the axe drops." Would that make you happy?
