But Kerr played in the NBA for a number of years and had a coach's mentality already. He was around the game and the league for the better part of his life. It's not surprising he has been successful. Stepping into a virtually perfect situation with Steph, Klay and their draft picks didn't hurt either.

Coaching high school basketball compared to college is a completely different animal.

He also played for Phil Jackson, Popovich, and Lute Olson.

Nate Oats had nearly 10 years of college experience as an assistant when he took the Buffalo job, including two as an outstanding recruiter. He coached high school in between.

The two most successful coaches to land in Athens over in the past 50 years Nee and Groce were both big recruiting assistants prior to the job. Where the program is right now I'd be for Ohio trying that model again but next time paying to keep them in Athens once they start winning.

Good luck with that. It isn't always just about the money. The big programs have a huge advantage in just about everything and the advantage is ever expanding. You either a) have decide you are really going to step up your budget or b) hope you get lucky like St. Mary's did by hiring a coach who is happy where he is and is fine with a good (not great) mid-major salary. As for a) we seem more likely to be moving in the opposite direction of that so we'll have to keep our fingers crossed for b).

Season to date results:
Overall Record in MAC 3-4

3 wins are against teams with loosing record
4 losses against teams with winning records
Balance of the schedule; 11 games in total
7 games against teams with winning records
5 games against teams with loosing records

5 home games

Based on the these facts it's expected that we will end the MAC season with a loosing record.
I project we will go 4-7 for the rest of the season.
Ending W-L Record MAC 7-11
Ending W-L Record Total Year 16-15

I think we need a young coach who is a good recruiter to turn this program back around, even if he leaves after a few years. Someone who doesn’t do a lot of loosing.

Young, MAC experience, Assistant under Groce and Holtmann. Good recruiting at Butler and so far at OSU.

I'd take Snyder over Groce in a heartbeat. Snyder stayed 25 years and retired at 55. And beat plenty of Big 10 teams in his time; also Kentucky to get us to elite 8. Groce left first chance for more $$$ and is now back in the MAC.

Not sure how young he is anymore but he has been really good everywhere he has been. He is definitely not a looser

Boals isn't young; he's 46! Other than Christian who was 47 when hired he'd be the oldest as far back as I recall. Snyder was 30, Bandy around 34, Nee 35, Hahn 33, Hunter 40, O'Shea 39, Groce 37, Phillips 41.

Shaus didn’t hire Solich. He didn’t come until 2008, well after Solich.

That was before you could become rich coaching basketball. Nobody is going to turn down the opportunity to have their family financially set by taking a contract at a P5. It can even be done at the MAC if the administration commits.

Amazing to think TOS has gone from young new coach to a B&B retiree already in this century. From my experience under 40 is young to be a FB Head Coach but for basketball 32 is the same as 40. We keep hearing from OCF how Phillips is a young coach but at 46 not really nor is he leading his first D1 basketball program.

Agreed - Snyder coached in a totally different era of college athletics that isn't comparable to 2012, or 2019. No way to fault any coach that leaves early. The absolute key, in my opinion, is to find a coach that also values hiring guys that could leave them and the Bobcats early to become a head coach, or associate head coach elsewhere - Chris Holtmann or Fuss for example. That caliber of assistant coach could then take over the program when the coach leaves, retaining some form of continuity. Easier said than done I'm sure, but an important part of the success at Xavier and Butler over recent years.

Seeing Holtmann's name in this thread reminds me of how I wish the Groce timeline had been positioned differently and somehow we could've gotten a couple years of Holtmann at the helm instead of losing him to Gardner-Webb.

Yeah, I know this isn't the most reasonable idea, but look at Memphis with Penny Hardaway. He didn't have much coaching experience, now he is getting big-time recruits coming to his alma mater. Would having Gary Trent back in Athens help bring recruits to the campus? Would it create a buzz around the school?

Personally, I question that. How many people in and around OU younger than 30 years old even know who Gary Trent is? Or along the same line of thinking, Geno Ford or Jeff Boals? Maybe it reinvigorates older fans and alumni in their 40's and older, but anyone younger than that, unless they're a basketball/OU sports die-hard, those folks probably don't even know who those guys are, or what their significance is. If you don't sell the history of the program game in, and game out, those great old players are of no significance to the current batch of students. I'd even bet you that more than 50% of freshmen and sophomores don't even know who DJ Cooper is.
