According to The Post, missed free throws hurt us in last night's game.

The team was also terrible from the line at the Alabama A&M game I went to.

Free throws are something that should be "gimmies".

They're always the same, and can be practiced.

I know there are some people on here who coach.

Are free throws not being practiced anymore ?

While we're at it, we'd better work on our free throw defense... Back to back games with the opponent shooting 100%. I kid about the defense of course but, that's weird.

We have missed too many front ends of 1 and 1s for my liking as long as I can remember.

We missed two front ends (Doug Taylor in the first half and Teyvion Kirk in the second). Going into last nights game we were hitting 72% from the line which isn't bad. Would like to see how many of our misses are late in games when we are playing on tired legs because of the short bench right now. We were 8 of 12 (75%)last night going into the last minute but went 1-4 in the last 50 seconds. Offset that with Iona going 13-13 for the game including 8-8 from TK Edogi who was a career .565 ft shooter coming into the game.

Speaking of FT shooting, our opponents are hitting an absurd 84% of their FTs against us.

They struggled early from the free throw line last year too, then got better as the season progressed. Gavin is amazingly shooting 40% from three, and barely over 50% from the FT line. It's a mindset for them, not a skill.

Adding to that, Gavin is obviously a far better FT shooter than the 17-18 percentages show. I think he's even better than the 66% number he posted a year ago.

I'd agree with Van on the tired legs. It'll get better (I think) as healthy bodies return. Plus, Carter is a solid FT shooter as well.

You are only as good as the numbers show.....I am curious how you feel that Gavin is better than his 66% last year. Over the course of the year he proved to be a 66% FT shooter! Nothing more and nothing less, he was what he was.

He shot 84% as a freshman and shot over 80% his senior year in HS. His 66% came down to having one bad month. He was 11-25 in January. The rest of the year he was 75% and except for that one month and he's at 77% for his Ohio career. He also shot poorly from three that same month (6-22 or 27% from three). Not sure if he was dinged but every other month of his career he's been a pretty good shooter.

Van hit what I was getting at. His regular trend so far shows me he's 70-75% FT shooter. I didn't know the high school stats.

given our lack of depth, Gavin's outside shooting prowess this season has probably kept this team afloat. Not something I would have counted on from him coming into this year. I knew he was capable of hitting the occasional 3, but so far it's become a pretty good weapon for us.

I agree. The versatility and interchangeable parts/roles being created right now will pay dividends later in the season assuming most everyone returns to health. It will probably pay dividends into next year as well.

Yeah, I don't think Ohio is bad at free throws. 70 percent at the moment on the year, which is pretty average for NCAA Division I. As others have noted, it looks worse than it is because of the timing of the missed free throws, along with how incredibly well opponents have shot. Only 2 NCAA teams (Princeton and Murray State) have had opponents shoot better so far this year. Opponents have shot 96% in 3 games at The Convo.

Fact is last year he was what he was, and that was a 66% FT shooter, we can not change the facts.

I take full credit for the bad free throw shooting last night. It's kind of the announcer jinx extended to the stands. Several times last night when we had key free throws, I said to my wife, "This guy's pretty good at the line." She says, to me, "I hope so, but you've probably jinxed him." Then, he either misses the front end of a one-and-one or misses both shots of a two-shot foul. Now, if the players had only had private shuttles to the game . . . (right, BTC?)

No one is trying to change facts. Just explain them. In 2010 we finished 9th in the MAC in the regular season. That's a fact. But only people that want to argue just to argue would debate that we weren't one of if not the best team in the MAC at the end of the year. But you'd just point out we were 9th and call it a day. Life without context is pretty meaningless. I'll bet you all your Eeyore dollars that he shoots at least 70% from the free throw line the rest of the season.

If this is a discussion point at the end of the year - then there were at LEAST 4 or 5 OTHER O or D execution issues that were as much or MORE important

Sooooo, how is this line working out? Looks a lot more like 60% than that 75-80% that’s been touted. Do we have a large enough sample size yet OUVan and OU-C?

It's not holding up, but I'm wondering if the pounding he has taken over his college life has affected his shooting in general.
