Fantastic. One more year of limbo coupled with declining crowds and mediocre (at best) hoops.

On the other side of the coin, it's hard to see any coach accept a 36% pay cut.

The SP era is over as soon as this team gets pounded like a minute steak on the road in the MAC Tournament.
Is a 5 year sample not enough for Saulcoholics? Is being the worst team in the MAC East not enough of an eye opener? I'm just trying to figure out what Saul has done this season that warrants even a consideration of an extension.
Mr. "I've been here a year plus" is back. Saul won 54% of his games in the face of a LOT of adversity (i.e. injuries).

I guess we can try to get Groce back ... maybe he can pull in guys who get us to the NCAA. He's had "problems" in Athens, Champaign and Akron with some of his "quality" recruits.

Who are you more impressed with? Groce or Saul in terms of them as a person and in terms of those they brought to campus?

The following to me is an embarrassment to Ohio.

You make a good point, mid70. I had known about some of the problems AB had here in Athens, and vaguely knew he might have had some problems in other locales. But, I had no idea his rap sheet was that long. It is, indeed, embarrassing. I have fond memories of the way he played when he was having one of "in the zone" games, but those fond memories really sour when I read stories like this. I must admit I always have trouble understanding how a gifted athlete can end up like this. I guess I put athletes on too much a pedestal. I know that's my problem, but I'll admit I do it a lot, particularly my beloved Bobcats.

Just curious...

What AD has extended his big ticket coach hire that lead the program into the cellar to a lesser dollar contract?

FYI, a big ticket contract paid for with buyout money from the previous coaches getting way too much hate here.

If Saul delivered as paid to do... and he hasn't. We'd have a new AD (he's been in full TOS mode for at least three years looking to move up) and a winning basketball program. Saul knows all of this and so should many posters on this board that apparently don't.

We're moving on... it's a done deal. Saul failed and now the program is squeezed with no money to go buyout the next guy. It's going to be a an assistant, hopefully who can recruit. Get ready for the ride!

And since I'm quite sure that you, sir, are not a hypocrite, we can also assume that you find Gary Trent to be a major embarrassment to Ohio University as well? Because his trangressions in the public record were at least comparable to those of Mr Bassett, and probably worse.

The Mattas left Columbus sometime in the summer or fall of 2017. As the Columbus Dispatch reported when he returned to town for an event last June, he was driving a vehicle with an Indiana tag and Butler Bulldog license plate frame. His daughter attends Butler.

Were you there for Villanova? I have always wanted to go to Hinkle and the Palestra and compare the two.

Care to share a post from 2010 declaring your shame with respect to Groce? I don't think anyone was complaining after Georgetown, but it's easy to take the moral high ground now.

MAC teams don't hit home runs without getting some dented pumpkins -- Gary Trent is a prime example of Ohio practically being "last chance U" for a guy. A guy who won a lot of games in Athens but who also did a lot of things that few of us here would be proud of.

If Saul's main job was to build a team full of wonderful kids who got great grades and stayed out of trouble, he'd be MAC coach of the year. Like it or not, he's measured by wins and losses and he's got a losing record in the MAC and a program that's falling farther behind a rising conference every year. This isn't Division III, and I doubt Ohio is coughing up $550k a year because the team is full of nice kids.

Providence.....and let me know if you ever wanted to go to either. I have season tickets at both including behind Butler's bench.....sorry to do an advertisement for my company but it's kind of what I do.

For anyone who hasn't been to Hinkle, I highly recommend it, and suggest taking him up on this offer. If I lived an hour closer, I'd probably go to a couple games a year there. A freakin' phenomenal hoops experience there!

While at Ohio State Thad Matta made almost double what he would make at Ohio...just from Nike alone.

Why in the world would he come here to coach in the shadow of the program that canned him for one-seventh the amount of money?

Brian, I agree and for more reasons than you state. I am assuming the health issues Matta has had since unsuccessful back surgery in 2010 have not abated, for one.

BUT, if the AD wants to sound him out, why not? The worst that could happen is that he says no, and we move on.

Those guys really have an itch for competition that I don't personally have, I guess. If I got a $8.8 million buyout, I wouldn't be found in a climate that could be described as anything other than tropical the rest of my life.

Especially if I had the issues Matta had health-wise.

So I'd consider the Hawaii or Chaminade job. That'd be about it.

Oh, or San Diego State. I could do San Diego.

dig the responses in regards to at least throw Mr. Matta into consideration. No is an answer that happens everyday. I didn't realize family relations to Butler. most coaches have that competitive spirit. sometimes a breather is important. especially with health reasons, family etc. I don't know the gentleman personally. I would assume finances wouldn't be the highest intention. I.E. Frank Solich and his desire for the GAME. I do recall Coach Huggins had a stool for a moment while coaching.

Hilarious stuff coming from a guy that is currently obsessed over Schaus' job as AD. Perhaps you should add that to your signature?

Hey, all you John Groce lovers:
OHIO 73
Groce 49
Someone call Groce and see if he wrote a check for the clinic Coach Phillips put on him at Rhodes Arena today.

Oh, and just so you know, I don't dislike John Grove but I hate all you worshipers on here.
GO BOBCATS.
