We obviously are loyal to our alma mater and love Athens and the campus. But who's to say that these characteristics are what today's top high school athletes are looking for?

From a coach's perspective, I'm guessing the "best job" is the job that offers the best opportunity to quickly build a "dominant" program and, unfortunately, move on to a new, better paying opportunity.

Given these criteria, I would rank Toledo and Buffalo clearly ahead of us. If Akron were ever to find the money to build an arena (which they won't), they'd jump ahead too.

Toledo and Buffalo have decent facilities and are located in urban areas with better media exposure. My guess is that we are more aligned with BSU, or "Balls" as you prefer, which has a nice facility and a decent heritage. On the academic side, our coaches are saddled with higher admissions standards than the staffs at some MAC schools, including Akron, Toledo, EMU, WMU, CMU, and Kent.

As for Ohio having the largest BB budget and highest salary, I believe both support my thesis - we need to spend more to attract the talent we want/need.
Agree with the benefits you ascribe to Buffalo and Toledo. Akron and Kent (just a few minutes away) could have a similar advantage.

I'm thinking of our friend Eagle66 who suggests the A10 is a cut above -- particularly the top half of that league's spenders who invest $1-$2 million/year more than top tier MAC programs on hoops. These programs are in bigger cities -- St. Louis, Dayton, Richmond, Philadelphia, D.C., near Boston, etc.

I think those numbers can be skewed, right? 2 Good seasons with lackluster finishes and two bad seasons, one not really under his control.

There are things that I dislike about Saul's coaching. His waiting on to use TOs on timeouts to stop momentum and calm players down. His lack of contingency plans when recruiting which is probably harder than I imagine it at a small school.

There are things I like though too. Seeing players like Gollon really develop well over 2.5 seasons is amazing. When he gets his offense to flow like I believe he envisions it does feel unstoppable.
11-7,with a trip to the MAC Semi finals
= Lackluster finishes?
Uh...yeah, that is a lackluster finish. Turned down a postseason invite as well.
It was actually a very strong finish if you were paying attention. I know some of you are immune to facts but we had a lull in the weeks following Campbell's injury and came back very strong. The 11-7 2-seed last year, was a strong finish and a great coaching job.

Also, some of you that think MAC rosters should just be stacked top to bottom haven't apparently watched MAC basketball in the last 30 years or so. Have you even watched the NBA? Their 12th men don't see the floor either. Why is an NBA roster not stacked with championship level talent all the way to the end of the bench? Please, lay off the drugs.
Clearly, you're offended and you can spin the length of "finish" to what you want, but the season didn't end the way I thought it would hence the "lackluster" term.

What an odd headline

Appalachian Athens a big change for Akron U transfer

For a university that gets offended everytime someone uses Ohio U that headline made me smile

Quite convenient that FearLeon quoted your original post right away, allowing for simple comparison. Hopefully the conference numbers improve. Time will tell.

Bump. Updated through February.

Maybe Jim Schaus was prescient when he said we'd "look a lot like Western Michigan". Yikes.

Also - because I've been looking at it: possible seedings for this years MAC tournament.

1) Buffalo: 14-2, 0 GB. Can finish as high as #1 or as low as #2. First round bye secured.
2) Bowling Green: 12-4, 2 GB. Can finish as high as #1 or as low as #3. First round bye secured.
3) Toledo: 11-5, 3 GB. Can finish as high as #2 or as low as #5.
4t) Kent St: 9-7, 5 GB. Can finish as high as #3 or as low as #8.
4t) Central Michigan: 9-7, 5 GB. Can finish as high as #3 or as low as #8.
6) Eastern Michigan: 8-8, 6 GB. Can finish as high as #4 or as low as #10.
7t) Akron: 7-9, 7 GB. Can finish as high as #4 or as low as #11.
7t) Miami: 7-9, 7 GB. Can finish as high as #4 or as low as #11.
9t) Ball St: 6-10, 8 GB. Can finish as high as #6 or as low as #11.
9t) Northern Illinois: 6-10, 8 GB. Can finish as high as #6 or as low as #11.
11) Ohio: 5-11, 9 GB. Can finish as high as #7 or as low as #11.
12) Western Michigan: 2-14, 12 GB. Will finish #12 and play on the road.

What's been missing from Ohio basketball lately is the home court advantage in MAC play. Ohio owned the Convo under TOS (54-16 in eight years) and Groce (24-8 in four years). But Christian's teams were only 11-6 and Saul's have dropped to 25-18. Makes it tough to do well in the MAC.

+1

It's why I always loved the Golf Standings.....quite the effective way to demonstrate the capabilities of each team of who was holding serve and stealing a few on the road.

You're in the right place as a Bobcat athletics fan, but Saul doesn't suck as a person, Just as the Ohio coach... get the boxes (have a picnic and help him fill them Saul-fanatics) get packed and move on. The move is already paid for because his overpaid coaching fell short.

Now, is there an AD problem? Next could be worse it he screw up again.
