Buffalo 82 Akron 46. I know this was a tall task but come on FearLeon, I thought Groce knew how to get his guys prepared for March, the only thing that natters. What happened?

Central beats Kent 89-81 for the rights to be Buffalo's next victim.

NIU & Toledo starting soon...Ball St & BG later. Hoping we get to see Toledo & BG tomorrow night.

Make no mistake about it, no matter what happens Friday or Saturday...Buffalo is IN. I will be rooting for them to somehow lose and the MAC get 2 in.

Funny how we're both rooting for that to happen. It's almost going to become gamesmanship for the mid-major programs and their leagues to have teams lose to get multiple teams in if needed in these scenarios. I only say that simply because getting 2 teams in every year helps the entire league's basketball budget (or should in theory) if we can get a few teams in every year. Also helps that the MAC also had a solid non-league as well.

Nonetheless:

Toledo by 12
BG by 15

I could care less what Groce does at Akron. The man is responsible for some very important banners hanging from the Convo rafters. That I won't forget. At least he made it to Cleveland. Last time I checked, Saul tapped out before Cleveland two years in a row.

You don't get to repeatedly use his March prowess in many debates and then ignore his failures. Let's not forget you being in awe over his 1 point 1st round victory last year...

Obsessed much with Groce? You talk about his March failures more than you talk about the great success he brought to Ohio. And it's worth repeating. Groce got to Cleveland these past two years. How did Saul do? I'll let you have the last word on this since you seem to be enthralled by the topic.

How bad is this? It is the first time Northern Illinois has made the MAC semifinals in 16 years.

For those that hate my Pitino and Jans suggestions - I'm telling you, Mark Montgomery is the guy we should target (assuming this win streak comes to a screeching halt tomorrow).

It's plausible. No matter how good he himself is, I honestly cannot see NIU becoming a championship program

The boys from Tropical Rockford are in the semis for the first time in 16 years! Some of you old time 80s MAC tournament devotees will remember that Coach Danny Nee literally blew a gasket when the MAC awarded the tournament to Rockford in 1984 and 1986. He kept sarcastically referring to it as Tropical Rockford and if I remember correctly they sold shirts at the arena saying; "Welcome to Tropical Rockford."

I seem to recall watching the game with a group of friends in Athens fed in from Rockford which resembled some sort of cable access channel. It had all the appearances of the Aurora cable access channel from the mythical Wayne's World. Northern Illinois' fortunes have never been great in hoops. I think their star player Kenny Battle transferred to the Illini after that 1986 season? I wish the Huskies well, maybe this is the spark they need to rekindle the magic.

The quote was "Rockford may not be the end of the world but you can see it from there". The billboard on the way into to town read "Danny Nee, welcome to the end of the world." Of course, the six of us in my Wagoneer may have had a few apertifs so the memory could be somewhat failing.

I don't dislike the idea, but do you think it's realistic that Schaus will poach ANY in conference coach?

In some ways, I think it would be brilliant. Strengthen yourself while weakening one conference opponent.

Only one of us is obsessed with Groce and it isn't me. I admit I am bewildered by your continued crusade for him. When you made the ridiculous post when Akron beat Ohio, you got what you deserved when others ridiculed it when Ohio blew out Akron. The same is true here going back to your post from last March.

Sure seems like you are obsessed with Groce since you are constantly post diving to some how burn Fear Leon. When Akron crushed Ohio, Leon faced the fire. He also noted he only cares about what Groce did at Ohio. Of course comparisons are happening on here- its all a part of the discussion. Not sure what else you want here.
End of the day, we all should be appreciative of the guy and what he accomplished. WE ARE LONG WAY from being near a sweet 16. May as well be grateful for the time we were there. Hopefully our next coach- if JS doesn't screw it up (scary possibility) will get this program back on the right track.

Under 4 timeout, Buffalo leads CMU 76-74.

Massinburg closes it out 85-81. MAC could use a Buffalo loss.

This conference is so cheap. Buffalo gets national TV but the other semi is on a network no one in this footprint gets.

Yeah, it's pretty bad when the tournament winds up on four different networks from three different providers (although FCS may be part of Disney, which owns ESPN). CBS shows up for one game.

What does it say about Buffalo that they can go 6 of 32 from beyond the arc and still win with 85 pts? If we had gone 6-32 from 3, we wouldn't have scored 40.

BG had a 23-pt lead on NIU at the half; leads by 3 with :08 to go.
Update: BG wins by 4.

Let me tell you how much I enjoyed having to Google search where the heck Fox College Sports was - only to realize it's the online only streaming version of Fox Sports sorta like ESPN+ is to ESPN. No wonder I couldn't find it on any of my streaming services.

Searching around and going through about 5 webpages - and 15 minutes later....hey look at this! It's MAC tournament basketball!

Embarrassing.

In the meantime, go BG tomorrow. Only chance this podunk league will have of getting 2 into the tournament any time soon.

Lousy MAC ref(s) Buffalo vs Central.

Missed a shot clock violation--something like that should be reviewed at the next break in action. It gave Buff a 1-point lead when a later foul occurred and a free throw made.

Then a Massinburg dribbles down to the block and a phantom foul is called when he is dribbling.

Buffalo really turned up the defensive pressure at the end but those two calls gave them some breathing space.

Come on Buffalo...do what Gonzaga did and take a dive in the championship game. After this year, who knows when the conference will ever be in this great position to get two teams to the dance. The commissioner better tell Nate before the game to take the foot off the gas tonight...hahaha.

Go BG!

I was trolling the NIU fan site last night for a few minutes. Boy were they upset that only those with satellite TV were able to get the game. By halftime, though, one wag said, "We should be happy that no one is watching this game." That was, of course, before NIU went on their run and made it an interesting game.
