Why is it a "stunner"?
Never thought we’d see a MAC coach make more than 800K in one season.

Sets the standard for the next step in pay for league coaches.

Great for Buffalo. Not so great for the State of Ohio based MAC schools. They can't pay $800K for basketball coaches in the current climate.

As and aside, I wonder what Buffalo's real attendance has been this year. Are they drawing well?
They set a record for attendance. Of course, with SRO, I think they only fit 6,400. Still, interest is on the upswing for obvious reasons. If they can capture and retain the interest of the general public, they will be golden.

Of course, I saw this happen personally with Cleveland State and their Cinderella run in the 80s. All of Cleveland got behind them... for one season. They built the financially disastrous Wolstein Center on that momentum and as soon as the team stopped competing, everyone in Cleveland went back to watching Ohio State. It will take sustained excellence for Buffalo to convert lifelong Walmart Syracuse fans.
I agree. It’s fools gold. There will be some other mid major that will think if they just get the right guy and pay him power 5 money, it will elevate them into the next level. As long as you don’t review your athletic budget.

The MAC is paying A10 money now. The better the base salary, the bigger the buyout so there is logic to it. That is what this new contract for Oats is about a way score a buyout if he proceeds to the sweet 16. Ohio should have done it with Groce.
