I will take 3 turnovers or less every game from Kirk. It looks likes Saul had a nice heart to heart with him when they got back to the states.
I think this is probably going to be the biggest key going forward if Jordy is out for an extended period or the whole season. When TK plays under control and within the system, doing what he does best, this team looks completely different. The ball moves, passes are crisp, everybody attacks the glass (more on that below) and we play better defensively.

*Other musings from last night*

-Gavin finding his shot last night was a welcome sight. He, BVP and eventually Gollon could be a pretty lethal combo off the bench when firing on all cylinders.

-Three players with 5 assists last night (BVP, TK, Preston). Usually gonna win a lot of ball games with that kind of sharing.

-Still waiting to see what Cowart can do offensively, but man he picked up the slack in other areas last night when he wasn't shooting well. Grabbed 8 rebounds and had 3 assists. Hoping he gets that jumper working.

-Nice to see that Ohio actually HAS offensive rebounds this year. I remember looking at box scores from last year's games and we were lucky to get a few. A little under half of the rebounds Ohio grabbed last night were on the offensive glass.

That number is a bit misleading. He had a handful of really ill-advised shots that (to me anyway) were like turnovers. The stat sheet may say 3, but it felt more like 5-6 watching the game.

I liked what Saul said post game about more time with Carter and BVP on the floor together. Those two looked really good last night. Also, welcome back Gavin Block. Very solid game for Gavin last night, and hopefully that continues. Doug was Doug, he rebounded well and chipped in with double figure points. Preston has GOT to get some shooting confidence. For a guy I was hearing shot the ball so well coming through summer, Iona was playing off him at the arc daring him to shoot and he wanted none of it. The ball seemed to move really well last night, and for the most part we got a lot of good looks and made them count.

Even though Carter is clearly having a solid start to the year, I still feel like he's not getting enough post touches, but that's me.

I actually agree here, which is crazy because he's still scoring at will. If he gets even more touches? Woo boy.

One other thing, I only counted 9 guys Iona brought to play. Seemed a little light. I know one guy got booted before the season but it still seems like a small roster. They list 11 on their roster. Anyone know why they traveled so light? Injuries? Suspensions?

Yeah, it seemed like we had more assistant coaches than Iona had players. What's up with all the guys in suits on our bench?

It wasn't like we suddenly were draining everything, we were only 7 for 22 from 3 (6 for 11 from BVP/Block). I maintain our sub-par shooting ability is the only thing keeping us from being a top tier contender. Rebounding is OK, defense is solid, ball movement is good and should improve, effort is great.

Preston & Cowart just haven't got it going yet. Saul clearly believes in their ability...Not sure I wouldn't back their minutes off some and/or not start them in favor of BVP/Block. If they start clicking more we could be real dangerous.

Excited for the next 5. Marshall/Xavier/Radford/Detroit/Purdue is a compelling stretch.

Preston is the weakest of the starting 5. If there is no one better at the 2 then our bench is awful. He can't score and looks lost on the floor. When ever the ball rotates to him is looks like he can't wait to pass it off. Even when he is open for a shot he passes.

Soooo...he knows he's not shooting well, so he passes the ball to someone who might be shooting better. And he's a PG...and that's a bad thing to you?

FWIW, his current stats:

3rd on team in Assists per game
3rd on team in Assist/Turnover ratio
4.5 points per game and 3.0 rebounds per game, shooting 75% from free throw line

His floor shooting is bad, but if that comes around he'll be fine. He sees the floor better than TK and doesn't turn it over as much, and has a pass-first mentality. What's not to like about that?

I agree with '71 that Preston appears to be a weak link. He looked lost on the floor much of the night. His shot? My gosh, it needs to be completely re-engineered - just terrible form, including sideways rotation. Ugly.

Iona is what it is a win against a team we have to beat at home. I love everyone reading so much into performances. Consistency is the key and how we play against better or equal competition. Always good to get a win.

Same as anyone else. (I like your selective use of my post to cherry pick your own quote). Sorry you take exception to how up and excited people get when we beat inferior teams, or how down in the dumps people get when we loose a tough game. I apologize for personally judging teams I follow on a different set of criteria than most on here. If I go to the game and I see kids playing hard, hustling and a coach working, I am satisfied regardless of the outcome. Unless our team is stacked and an actual threat to go the distance, I do not have over the moon expectations. Our kids play hard, they work hard and they stay out of trouble, I can support that 110%, without having my world fall apart and going home and kicking my dog after a loss.

Also consider that ideally, he wouldn't even be playing 20+ min/g if Gollon or Dartis were healthy. He's not great, but he's doing okay filling the gap. The jump shot direly needs help though.

Saul now has a blue print performance that he wants from the team and that he can point to. Iona was not a good team, but Ohio whooped them. They did not let up. They have to keep moving the ball and taking and making open shots. Ohio moved at a faster pace than I have seen. When Iona missed, they pushed the basketball. BVP and Carter will be tough to handle because they both have inside out games, they need to continue to drive when given the opportunities. I loved Carter's aggression, he tried to dunk on the whole team, that will open up his three ball. Kirk missed a lot of shots, but he played good, especially of defense, he got some offensive rebounds, he can do that all season with his size and competitive nature. Saul needs to keep grooming him, they should watch video together and talk about how Saul wants his team ran. Go Cats

No doubt about that. Excluding Purdue, who is elite in that group of five, we'll have a really good idea where things are after seeing the results during that stretch. Marshall, Radford, and X are as good or better than the likes of Toledo, Ball State, Akron, Miami. Doing well against them should mean Ohio can do well in the MAC.

I will agree with this, it's a start and a place to build. OHIO did what they need to do against a team like Iona.

I don't take exception to your approach to fandom or anything you mentioned...I just genuinely wonder how much enjoyment you get from being here because you seem to just be annoyed all the time and think most everyone is a moron.

He and Cowart haven't scored much but they seem to be great at the other end of the floor, which people tend to undervalue.

Not annoyed at all, "amused" at many would be a better term. Though the success of our basketball and football teams have not been ideal, especially to the players and coaches, I recognize the work and effort they put in and I appreciate them for representing OHIO University sooo well. Everything else is out of my control so I just let it go.

Agree ... four of those five teams were NCAA teams a year ago. Very good measuring sticks.

Not super concerned about wins and losses in those five (because I think they could very easily go 0-5) ... but being competitive in all five would breed some confidence going into MAC play.
