I don't know the details, but the MAC and ESPN do have some kind of an agreement in regards to ESPN3. ESPN actually invested in developing the on-site resources at each campus to support ESPN3 broadcasts. I'm not sure the length of the agreement, but I'd be surprised if we saw a migration of this service to ESPN+. What I think we might see is that MAC games on ESPN3 would also be available by subscription on ESPN+ for those who did not have a cable and satellite contract that allowed access to ESPN3.

The on-site resources would still be used in the ESPN+ arrangement. There would be no difference as far as how the games are broadcast, just how we as consumers would be using it. Like I said, a friend told me that but it could just be a rumor. But with the way the new Sun Belt contract is set up, I wouldn't be surprised to see a switch by the MAC if ESPN3 was discontinued across the board.

I believe, given ESPN's contracts with cable and satellite providers, that those companies would have a say in this also. Whenever I watch ESPN3, on my AppleTV or portable device, it has a little logo up in a corner somewhere saying something like "Provided by Spectrum." The concept of ESPN+ is to extend the service to those who do not have another provider. This is for the "cable cutters." I'm not saying over time it might not morph into something else, just that I don't expect that anytime real soon. ESPN does not have a completely free hand here to do whatever they want capriciously.

Sure that's what the concept is, but that's not how it works for everyone. I for instance, am a cable cutter. I do however use Hulu Live, and that provides me with access to ESPN3. In theory you could say I'm doing the same thing as using cable, I just found a cheaper way around the system with about 2,000 less channels.

Marty... how is the ESPN+ experience going for you?

I'm curious if the MAC is getting data worth getting to figure out how to monetize this. The ASUN isn't. All I hear on the conference call is from ESPN is that the numbers are still being processed. Numbers ESPN is seeing in real time as the stream are going.

So, since last April when UNF provided ESPN+ with it's first live event (tennis) there have been no numbers shared.

I'm pretty confident that the + numbers compared to ESPN3 are awful.

The real problem is that the ASUN and probably the MAC (the MACTION football is real money) just said OK whatever you say ESPN.

Is anyone from The OHIO U going to NAB?

Actually, I'm quite alive. I just don't frequent this site as much as some others do. I saw your question regarding ESPN3, and as far as my participation in it, I have enjoyed every moment of it. The entire production crew, the staff at Ohio, and the coaches, have all been great to work with. As far as the numbers are concerned, I am not provided with any data as to how the MAC is doing, I have heard that our viewership is very high.
When asked a direct question, I am more than happy to respond, and again I appreciate the concern about my health, lol

Hey Marty!

Big fan of the broadcasts, man... HUGE Bobcats guy. I'm looking at getting into broadcasting myself. Can you answer me this? When doing games, or even news updates, specifically traffic news updates for a radio station, do I need to go by a nickname at all?

If I had one question about our espn+ production it would have to be about the horrible lack of game sound. was rewatching bits of the buffalo game and it was again, reminiscent of the old actv7 broadcasts. sounds like the announcers are in a booth on another site and no sound whatsoever from the arena. I know it wasn't a huge crowd but it was pretty involved. almost zero sound from the floor and zero sound from the arena. I want to hear the nets crack and I want to hear the ball bounce and the shoes squeak. There is none of that.

While we're at it, why no televised games during Christmas break when most other MAC schools are able to broadcast games during this part of the season?

I'll take you concerns to our production people regarding the audio part of the broadcast....thanks for the input...

and as far as the games over the break are concerned, staffing is the issue. I do not know what other schools around the league do for their "break" games in regards to production.....

There announcers ARE in a booth offsite in many cases, correct?

I think that happened sometime in the past, but I think that this year the announcers for the MAC games have been on site. ESPN gave each MAC school a grant over the last few years to develop on-site resources for these espn3.com and ESPN+ broadcasts. A friend mine was on the faculty advisory committee to ESPN for Ohio, and this is what he told me. Is this correct, Marty?

I think the announcers are on-site but the broadcasts from the Convo generally have terrible audio. It's tinny, almost like an old phone line, and the level is way too low. If you have the sound up where you can hear it the commercials come blaring out.

For those of us who are re-transplanted Athenians, coverage of the Ohio Bobcats has come a long way from struggling to track down the scores of the games in the back of the L.A. Times to now being able get the best seat in the house at the Convo no matter where I am in the world. I usually watch games with the sound off, but not when Marty and Toni are calling the games. Great work, guys.

In the Game Thread on Reddit, every single person was complaining about the Audio quality of our broadcast. You have to turn the volume way up to hear the announcers, there is literally no court or crowd noise and the audio sounds weird, like its AM radio or something. I feel like no other schools in the MAC have this problem. I hope we can figure it out because its a tad embarrassing.

From a technical standpoint it's still miles ahead of just a few years ago when we had one camera and they tried to sync the video with Russ's radio pbp. (Although I do miss being able to see all the stuff that goes on at the Convo during halftime and timeouts.) But it still has a ways to go to catch up to most of the other MAC schools' productions. The audio problems are the biggest issue, although Tuesday night there seemed to be occasional problems with the video freezing. And, at least on my computer, trying to sync the audio with the Stretch internet feed of the radio pbp doesn't work because Stretch's audio is practically non-existent.

Speaking of Reddit, I think it's just you and me that are both here and there. We need more representation there, people!

Yea, I've seen a few others but I don't think they are from this board. r/collegebasketball is an awesome place and the game threads are fun.

This^^^^. I will never complain about having access to watch just about every Ohio game on ESPN+ or ESPNWatch. It's light years ahead of what we were used too. Marty and Toni are a great team. However, I will say this. I always chucked when Toni said multiple times this year that Gavin Block has one of the best pump fakes in all of college basketball. Alrighty then........

Agree on everything, including Toni's usually spot-on analysis on Block's pump fake.

However, not every Ohio game is broadcasted. Again, my concern is lack of broadcasts during winter break when every other MAC team, or close to all of them, are able to staff their broadcasting teams when classes are not in session.
