OK. Let's hear you ideas for Ohio's next coach. Give me name and one paragraph with rationale. Will start keeping track of bios here.

Ryan Pedon - Following the Groce model. 14 years of MAC experience. An assiistant under Chris Holtmann (whom I think we all wish could have landed at Ohio instead of Gardner-Webb) the last 4 years. Has only ever been in the Midwest so should have great Midwest and especially Columbus-area recruiting ties.

Jeff Boals Jeff Boals - Positives--alum who played on a successful team. Head coaching experience in the Northeast, lots of recruiting experience in Ohio and surrounding states while an assistant under Thad Matta. Negatives--may be miffed that he wasn't offered the job when Coach Christian left. Also, losing in the first round of the American East Conference tournament didn't help.
Tom Ostrom Tom Ostrom - He's already landed two 5 Stars in Langford and Jackson-Davis, plus an elite 4 star out of Columbus in Jerome Hunter. He knows how to recruit at the highest level, and knows how to recruit Ohio. Plus he has worked under a pack-line defensive guy in Archie, who just so happens to come from the same coaching tree as Groce.
Lamont Paris 2018 Lamont Paris - Head coach at Chattanooga for last two years. 2017-18 season tanked 304 in KenPom, 2018-19 improved to 258.  Assistant at Akron and Indiana. Has all those OU guys on his staff already.
John Brannen John Brannen - Has had great success at Northern Kentucky, going to NCAA Tournament two of last three years. Has recruited Ohio successfully at NKU. Given his recent Horizon League Championship, may have sights set on $1M plus jobs?
Fife_Dane Dane Fife - Spent his entire playing and coaching career in the Midwest. In his 8th season in the very successful Michigan St. program. Was head coach for six years at IPFW but went just 82-97 (although 34-27 in last two seasons).
Image result for micah shrewsberry Micah Shrewsberry - Has experience as an assistant at both Butler and Purdue, and had a brief head coaching stint at IU-South Bend. Also brings NBA experience having been on Brad Stevens staff in Boston. Also ran basketball ops at Marshall when they were in the MAC, so has a sense of the league.
Brett Nelson Brett Nelson - Associate HC, Marquette. Brought to my attention by a former Bobcat who has worked in several SEC athletic departments. From West Va. Has been an assistant at both Marshall and Ball St. so knows something about the territory. Former standout player at Florida under Billy Donovan.
Pat Kelsey mug Pat Kelsey - Just completed 7th year at Winthrop. Was on the final list of candidates when Saul was hired. Can recruit Ohio and has Midwest ties. Cut from the same cloth and comes from almost the same tree as Groce. Has former Ohio coach Jayson Gee on staff. Turned down UMass, will he say yes to Ohio?

Fran dunphy? Done at temple after long and pretty successful tenure, seems like the type of guy schaus would go after. (I really don't know much about him other than what I just said)

Looking for the guy you want within the constraints that we can potentially get him (i.e. no Coach K.

If we want to stay former Bo Ryan assistants but ALSO has Ohio ties, just bring up Lamont Paris and his entire staff from Chattanooga.

Looking more into it, its not that far-fetched is it? Assistant at Akron and Indiana. Has all those OU guys on his staff already. IDK if we could afford him or if it's that much of a step up.

Copied from the retain Saul thread:

The most important thing to look at, IMO, is the assistant's recruiting track record. Groce was a grand slam hire because he was one of the nation's top recruiters, period. If you go back and look at the number of 5 Stars he was pulling in at OSU, it was remarkable.

Pedon may be a fine coach, but he is no where near the level that Groce was. That's why I'm saying Tom Ostrom's the guy. He's already landed two 5 Stars in Langford and Jackson-Davis, plus an elite 4 star out of Columbus in Jerome Hunter. He knows how to recruit at the highest level, and knows how to recruit Ohio. Plus he has worked under a pack-line defensive guy in Archie, who just so happens to come from the same coaching tree as Groce.

I'll say it again, Ostrom is the guy.

I'll add another negative: Was on the Ohio State bench when recruiting appeared to be trending in the wrong direction.

Steve Alford--Positives--huge name recognition (at least for older alums.) Successful stints at Iowa and New Mexico & tough enough to endure playing for the iconic Coach Bobby Knight. Younger players who don't know him that well would like that he played in the NBA and was successful at two programs. Negatives--disastrous final season at UCLA in which he was fired before the new year and the team was imploding--though the team wasn't exactly the most coach-able either. His legacy is not well known by high school athletes.

I'm open to other ideas, but this guy and his staff sound too good. He's only been there 2 seasons so what would it cost to buy out his contract?

Buyout money is going to limit the pool of possibles.

I am going to throw some young, inexperienced (in terms of head coaching) names at you and see what you all think. As an OU alumnus and someone who lives and breathes the Bobcats, I want a Bobcat. I want someone who will get the crowds and the O Zone back. I want someone who truly gets us.

Ric Johnson
Tommy Freeman
Aaron Fuss
Dante Jackson
Walt
David McKinley

Give me Aaron Fuss as the head coach and have him hire any of the three above and I am sold. We went with experience with Saul and Christian and while Christian could recruit a bit, he didn't care about Athens. Saul seems to care about Athens but did he ever truly "become" OU like Frank did?

Go ahead and proceed to ripping this suggestion :)

John Brannen at NKU looks very interesting to me. He looks like the kind of guy that JS would go after, but I've learned from experience that you can never predict JS, so his choice is likely to be no one on anyone else's list.

After last night, I think Brannen will be above Ohio's pay grade.

Not only that, they won't be able to talk to him for a week to ten days until NKU is out of the tourney.

I am under the opinion that Schaus already has a short list that he can now start the preliminary discussion with.
It is my hope that he has spoken to the team prior to this announcement being made, as well as the lone recruit.

Could Andy Kennedy still be considered a darkhorse candidate. Or the other Kennedy who was let go from Texas A&M yesterday?

This would be rediculous. The first sign of success would lead them out. Plus, what connection would they have to OU and being a "Bobcat?"

Kennedy coached at Cincinnati and the other coached at notoriously good mid-major Murray State.

What connection did Tim O'Shea have to Athens? Groce? Phillips? JC?

No more than the Kennedy guys. They are both 50 years old which may be too old to go job hopping. Kind of a "Solich" thing for hoops.

Who cares about being a "Bobcat"? Give me a winner who can recruit this area.

Bobcats are just happy to be Bobcats!
