That Ball State Dick Hunsaker coached team had a great deal of talent leftover from Rick Majerus. Now Coach Majerus wasn't exactly may favorite coach, but he certainly got the most out of his players. He made the players believe he recruited them to win and if they didn't, they weren't measuring up to their potential. Coach Hunasker took Ball State to the NCAA tournament later on as well so he wasn't merely using only Majerus' talent.

The key to any form of coaching is how much you are getting out of each player. Ball State had an amazing stretch where they got the most out of what they had; a modern comparison would probably be the current Northwestern football team. I don't believe the Wildcats have a single four or five star recruit in their starting line-up. Yet, Northwestern manages to compete and defeat teams with far superior "on paper" talent. Coach Oats has talent on his Buffalo squad, but his talent isn't that far superior to many of the upper echelon MAC teams in this or any recent year. Coach Oats simply knows what he is doing.
I like your Northwestern analogy. Since NW lost to the Akron Zippers, if you carry this analogy forward it means UB can easily lose to OHIO. Good call!

I think they might be the best MAC team I've ever seen, which dates back to 1995-96. It still amazes me that Nate Oats didn't end up elsewhere - Pitt for example - after last year.
You didn't get to see Ball State take UNLV to the wire; perhaps could have been a final four team? That Cardinal team would get my vote.

I remember that team, because my Dad is a Ball State alum for his undergrad years, and he followed them closely those years. I was mainly though referring to my time of truly following the conference on a regular basis. I looked them up though - they had everything going around those years!

Buffalo is going to demolish the entire conference. They are playing on a completely different level.

Vegas didn't believe and had them as a 4 point underdog at unranked Syracuse. Go in and pull away for a 12 point victory. If they win at #20 Marquette over the weekend they could sneak into the top 10.

I watched the final ten minutes starting when they were down about 5. I don't remember them making any sort of mistake during that stretch.

buffalo is very good this year. they could potentially be in the top 10. has any mac done that ever? cj massinburg is a bona fide nba prospect they definitely have an advantage over mac teams due to buffalo being the largest city in the mac.
Our very own Bobcats were ranked #5 in the December 23 and 30th AP polls in 1969(69-70 season). And the atmosphere in the Convo when we beat Rick Mount's Purdue team has to rank right up there. One Larry Hunter was a sub on that team.

And I just watched Buffalo beat 'Cuse. They are definitely for real. Even good teams don't seem to escape the conference schedule without a couple of hits along the way. Over/under on MAC losses?

I remember both of the ranking and the Purdue game. Great times for OHIO basketball!

Good article, thanks for posting. Who on BA is always whining about the offers recruits get? Or don't get? And then making a judgement on ability? From the article:

"Leading scorer C.J. Massinburg, meanwhile, had just one Division I offer, from Prairie View A&M"

Massinburg is a player. 25, 7 & 5 tonight.

So, are you comparing Massinburg to Springs? Or James? Or . . . ?

Have to think that if someone could pull off an upset in the MAC Tourney over Buffalo that this may finally be a year the conference gets in two teams?

Um, no. Are you saying the "look at the offers strategy" only applies to Ohio University basketball?

If UB wins at Marquette prepare yourself for UB to run the table...go undefeated and finish top 5 in the country. This Nate Oats dude knows a thing or two about recruiting and winning basketball.

If that all happens (which is possible) he is still there next year? He'd be on the short list of every program looking to hit the reset button.

Watched a lot of this game as NIU-UAB bowl game got out of hand and the basketball game was much more interesting. This UB team looks like the best MAC basketball team that I've seen since the Ball State Elite 8 team that was one shot away from the Final Four. Each time I see UB, I think the tempo is more that of an NBA team than a typical college team. I'm not talking about talent level, but the tempo and the physicality of game.

Buffalo has looked impressive first two months of the season. Been a long time since a MAC team done what they did racking up road and neutral court wins. Buffalo has a roster stacked with talent and lots of senior leadership. Coach likely getting an offer he can't refuse at the power conference school. I would be shocked if Ohio can stay within 20 points. Buffalo is a program on the rise. The rest of MAC needs to take notice of what an at-large resume looks like. Buffalo has built one this year.

Agree with you, Grover. That was the main reason for griping against Jay Preston..." he only has offers from Longwood and Maryland Eastern Shore."

They look like a Top 25 AAC team that popped up in the MAC somehow. Its exactly what this conference needs to get more respect. The switch to the Net rankings rewards margin of victory and offensive/defensive efficiency. This is hitting the Atlantic 10 hard as their top team is Saint Louis at #61. MVC's top team is SIU at #92. OVC has Belmont at #36 and Murray St #44. What this means is that any school can sign a top 50 recruiting class, coach them up and be an at-large team on the basis of their performance only. The RPI system made it impossible to do it out of a conference rated lower than 15 because the system measured the best schedule without considering performance on that schedule. Its still going to require recruiting in next level athletes to dominate the regular season.

I get it now. It's Preston that's being compared to Massinburg.

I was doing the same thing. Great minds think alike Ohio Cat Fan (or delusional minds think alike, hopefully it is the former and the latter.) I don't want to get ahead of ourselves, but if Buffalo could enter the conference season undefeated, we would see media coverage (professional and social) the likes of which the conference has never seen. The Ball State 1990 run occurred in the days before the internet, twitter etc. A rising Buffalo helps all conference schools, just when we needed it most.

I think Buffalo is very good but I still think they'll lose 2-4 MAC games, including one in Athens.
