Simmons made the decision that he felt was best for himself. Kirk has had an outstanding season as a freshman and Butler has played good when given an opportunity. Butler is a lot better than u think so don’t just sit there and think Kirk is just automatically going to be the man the next three years .

How many games has he played this season? Too many to red shirt for another season?
He's only DNP'd in 8 games, so no chance. On top of those 8 DNP's, he has 12 games with single digit minutes. 6 times he has logged 10+ minutes.
It wouldn't matter anyway. He used his "redshirt" season when he transferred from Houston to Ohio. The only way he'd get a 6th year is if he had a case for medical redshirt, which he will not get.

10 minutes, 3 points in W over Wisconsin yesterday. I must have just missed his 3-ball, I saw a lot of his run yesterday. When I saw him enter the game, Michigan's lead got to 23. A 10-0 Wisconsin run got Jaaron a seat back on the bench and I didn't see him re-enter after (but I missed the last few minutes of the game, curling was on NBC).

12 minutes vs Iowa, 5 points 4 assists 2 rebounds. Best game he's had in a while. Maybe he'll start seeing some uptick in minutes?

Key quote in the article:

In Michigan's offense, all actions are dependent upon other actions. Players, most specifically, the point guard, must react in real time. Simmons admits that it’s been too much to learn in one year as a graduate transfer.

“I’ve never seen stuff like this ever in my life, the things we do,” he said. “We got a lot of plays, we got a lot of different terms. I mean, I never heard of none of this stuff.”

So he did no research on Beilein and how he coaches......brilliant move by #JSmooth

How...why...I'm just flabbergasted by the whole situation.

Would he not watch some film on them before making his choice? Would he not ask the coaches what's expected of him before making his choice? And if you're Beilein, why would you WANT a guy who you know has no idea how to run what you want him to run?

Beginning to believe DFC's theory on Beilein just wanting to screw over Ohio.

Either that or not wanting him to end up at another B1G school where maybe he would have fit the system and contributed. I don't know, for me this move makes no sense from any angle. The player not knowing he doesn't fit the system or the coach not knowing...I know hindsight is 20/20 but this just doesn't make sense.

LOL. Right? It is crazy. Except, this is recruiting 101. The coach/staff sold a kid and the kid bought it. "You will help us a lot. We need a PG. You'll pick up our system quickly and get a lot of run. Its going to be great for both of us. You'll shine on the big stage kid...."

And, as we are learning, at schools other than Michigan (so far) you might get some cash thrown in by an agent or shoe company.....

The article was definitely written with a Michigan bias. At no time, apparently, did the writer think to ask why JS would risk everything he had going for him at Ohio, as if anyone would make the same decision.

What was it he didn't like at Ohio? Did their coached try to dissuade him? How was the decision made?

Interesting that he apparently was approach by other BIG teams, including OSU.

Bottom line - again not broached in the piece - if Simmons had stayed at Ohio, he would have been set up for a lucrative pro career at some level. Now, not so much.

I subscribed to The Athletic to read this and so far like the content over all.

I guarantee that other MAC (and mid-major) coaches will use this as a cautionary tale to potential grad transfers. The grass isn't always greener...

Jaaron was on UD's campus with his parents at 12:01 PM Thursday when the recruiting period opened up at Noon that day last Spring. OSU was in his living room the next night. My understanding is that the deal with Saul was that he would get his release so he could check out those two schools and that Jaaron didn't want it made public as there was a chance he would come back. I think the Michigan move may have strained relations.

I remember a number of people upset here that this thread was still alive. They didn't understand the significance or context. Seems to me this is one of the most important threads in Bobcat Attack history. The article in The Athletic should be printed and put up in the Bobcats locker room for every player to read. It will prevent any Bobcat from doing what Jaaron did again. Unless the next Gary Trent walks through that door, no Bobcat should be using grad transfer rule to jump to a Power 5 school for one year.

I am still amazed that Simmons made this decision based on very little thought on how he'd adjust to Beilein's system. This decision is reminiscent of his final play in an OHIO basketball uniform. #Reckless

I was more annoyed with the constant updates to his stat line. But new information like this article is definitely worth the thread.

Wow...I have the exact opposite take. yesterday, we played our archrival and couldn't put 7,000 people in the stands. No TV. Today, Simmons is playing in a game for MI against their archrival in front of a packed arena on national broadcast TV--and I'm not talking about CBSSN. MI nationally ranked and virtually assured of going to the NCAA tourney whether or not they win the conference tourney, which by the way will be nationally televised in almost its entirety. I sure hope Carter, Kirk and company aren't watching 'cuz if they are, they might just start asking themselves what they're doing here. As far as posting the Athletic piece in the locker room, sure, let's post a list of what-to-do and what-not-to-do instructions for those considering transferring. Look, we're not a power 5 program and the MAC is a one bid league. It's no longer the difference between Major and Mid-major, its Major vs. Minor. We may not like it, and some may not want to acknowledge it. But I think that's what the kids are seeing, and that's the reality of it.

Ho, hum . . .

So, let's just close down our program and take up intercollegiate twiddle-winks. We could probably be in a Power 6 Conference in that.

Justifying riding the pine versus leading. Be Dame Lillard or CJ McCollum, don't be Ronnie Lewis.

Yes, it's a big shock that the last-place team in the MAC isn't selling out arenas and airing in prime time. Counterpoint: I was actually heartened by the size and enthusiasm of the crowd on Saturday given the circumstances. There's a lot I'm not happy about, but the team is still playing really hard and getting far more support than one might expect.

You honestly think those guys are jealous of Simmons' situation? He isn't in the regular rotation and is essentially irrelevant. None of those guys would take that situation in their senior season over staying with the Bobcats.

Amen Andrew. Simmon's decision to do what he did will seriously hurt any chance he had of going to Europe and make decent money over there. He bailed out on his Bobcat teammates, his coaches, the Bobcat program. He would have been able to make a serious run at the MAC MVP. Because Simpson has made some improvement, Simmons is not even getting to the floor! I hope this thread goes away so we are not reminded of this depressing circumstance!

Double Amen! Simmon's story is not the wave of the future, so much as it's a cautionary tale for those who might be tempted to go this route in the future. Furthermore, it has absolutely no bearing on Kirk, Carter, etc., because they are not eligible for a grad transfer at this juncture, and if they did transfer they'd have to sit out a year. And, to top that off, there are still some players who have loyalty to their coach, their school and their commitments.

If he wants to play in Europe he will definitely get a shot.
