According to a professor at Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus (IN), it would be approximately $11,510,000. That's the amount the prof says it would take to buy/sell on the open market. He used a formula that took several factors into account. I believe he ranked Akron as the most valuable MAC program and I think we were third.

The most valuable overall was UK at $334 million. Ohio St was 12th at $124.7 million. Dayton was 18th at $100 million. All other programs after that were under $100 mil.

Info from the Wall St. Journal.

If it took the real estate into account, would imagine ours is a bit higher due to apartment usage.

Nonetheless, not surprised about us being 3rd. The part that shocks me is I figured Toledo would be highest value due to practice court, weight room, renovated facilities and the works along with support financially year over year.

Is this taking into account that I don't have to play my players at all? Or is it valuing the scholarships as their payment?

Like said above, including the facility as ownership would change the numbers drastically. Given how many different uses the Convo has, I don't think it would be fair to include it as an asset to the Mens basketball program. And if the program doesn't own it, does it take into account renting the facilities?

If I have to record scholarships as an expense and don't own the facilities, I would have a tough time paying very much at all. Without much of a TV contract, I don't see a lot of black numbers.

Wait a minute. We're actually having a discussion based on a theory by a professor at the Columbus, Indiana campus of IU-PU? And the theory was actually reported in the WSJ? Welcome to Bizarro World.

This seems so arbitrary to me. For example at one time Tesla's stock price was almost $400 a share, now it is around $275 a share. Yet, the company has never made a dime, it has billions in investment money being poured into it with the hopes that electric cars will one day be the norm. Hope is the operative word here.

Our beloved basketball team, sports program in general, and MAC athletics in particular operate on a variety of subsidies. Even the vaunted school up north only has two athletic programs that make money. They are able to subsidize a variety of sports because of football and basketball, again with football being the operative word.

Now some might say, but what about all of the equipment and the facilities we have? Well, who else would ever use it? Our beloved Alma mater is located in a very rural area. You could make the same case for Tesla, they have quite the facilities in California and Nevada, but who is going to use it if electric cars don't catch on and they need to actually make a profit instead of operating on other peoples investment money and government subsidies.

Most of us here are the 1% who actually attended games when we went to school in Athens. It doesn't end there, we even come back when we can to watch various sporting events. Honestly, think of other MAC grads you know who are friends, work colleagues, neighbors etc. How many of them return to their Alma mater? I can't think of a single one and I have a neighbor who actually played a varsity sport at Miami.

I we wonder why higher ed costs so much? Useless, needless "research."

Very true. I saw the WSJ article and they've been doing a ranking/valuation for a few years now. Louisville used to be number 1. Given our revenue, even accounting for the unpaid labor, we are worth no where near 11M. I looked at 2018 attendance figures and we averaged about 5k per game. The tickets are about 3 bucks a head if you buy a package. I don't know how many are ponying up for the 1000 dollar seats , but it can't be that many. We lose money every year.

I know you're making a joke, but it's likely true! Fifty bucks is accurate.

I also totally missed that IUPUFW is now just PUFW until I saw a score on ESPN during conference tourney time. Guess it happened about 2 years ago?!

IPFW sounded like a urinary tract disorder anyway. Of course, PU Fort Wayne isn't all that appealing, either.

I know how many locals pronounce IUPUI -- "EwwiePewie"

Does anyone know how IUPUFW would be pronounced? It boggle my mind to try and contemplate the possibilities.

Whatever the amount is that you put your money where your mouth is. Whatever BBall season tickets total price you pay, and the Bobcat Club level you contribute (% of Bobcat Club contribution that you consider as allocated to secure the seat licenses required for the seats you buy for BBall).
