So ... guess that's something.

I guess this feels a little odd to me. Sure, you're moving to the SEC...but to a football school with limited basketball tradition and what hopes do you really have of overtaking powers like Kentucky, Tennessee, Florida, and teams with recent success like LSU and Auburn? I'd think expectations might be a bit lower, since it is a football school first. I don't think he'll fail miserably there, I am just not sure I see that as a program that can make it into the top 3-4 of the SEC. But hey, what do I know. Groce going to Illinois felt different since Illinois had some proven Big Ten success with regular season titles 4 times in the 2000's. Alabama has 1 SEC title since 1990.

We'll see how it goes, I'm just glad he's out of the MAC!

If Auburn and South Carolina can raise their game recently (SEC Championship, Final Four respectively), Alabama can too. I would argue that Alabama is a better basketball job than South Carolina and Auburn.

It's interesting indeed, because a year ago, I though Oats to Pitt was a completely logical move, and it didn't happen.

Gotta be weird taking a job like Nebraska, Alabama or Illinois. Jobs you know you can't really build anything sustainable and odds are miniscule you'll still be there seven years later. Still, the pay is great and your assistants get taken care of.

It's just got to stink taking a job where you know there's not historical evidence you can do much if you don't just start baldly cheating to get talent. I really do think a lot of these coaches would love to stay where they're at. Like a Groce or an Oates. In a perfect world, they'd like to stay and build a Gonzaga or Butler type of program. The money just becomes so overwhelming and not taking care of your assistants by doubling their pay just seems unrealistic.

Apparently the buyout on that contract offered up no defense to him leaving.

SEC schools get weird. They don't give a crap about basketball...unless their arch rival suddenly found success.

Auburn hires a used car salesman who has the Tigers dancing and thriving until the next investigation and Alabama suddenly is concerned about its program.

The Alabama athletic director seems like a pretty good source on this hiring.

At the same time you go from a single bid conference that has no chance of winning a national championship to a conference that places 6+ in the dance (albeit to a team that will not win a national championship). His play could be to go to a "next level" team if successful at Bama - a step that would be much more difficult from Buffalo. So hope to play the long-game and make close to $2.0 million a year doing so. Mid-majors always talks about becoming the next Gonzaga. That is like the Wake Forests saying they want to be the next Duke.

In these cases the only thing that makes sense is $$$ and a few million of them at that.

The Alabama athletic director, the University of Buffalo and 9000000 media outlets.

But you know what ... they could be wrong.

Funny you use this analogy. I know a number of UK fans who say Pearl would be their pick if Cal were to leave. One used car salesman for another...

I don't think they intended for it to prevent him leaving. Buffalo had to know suitors would come calling this year. Might as well get some coin from it. What's $750K to the University of Alabama anyway?

You're underestimating Nick Saban's desire to hire Art Briles as a Bubble Screen Senior Advisor.

Really? The first post says the AD from Alabama tweeted it. But you can doubt it or assume the AD's Twitter account was hacked.

As far as success in Lincoln or Tuscaloosa I am inclined to agree. Look at the succession of coaches that have left Alabama that include some pretty respected names. Good coaches but no upside there. Just like Holtmann up north. Football will always be Number One and unlike Florida where both co-exist some school can never put them on equal footing. Illinois is a different breed because they have 7 decades of basketball on par with football and a recent Final Four. Between Henson, Self and the assistant coaches with bags of money in Chicago they are a basketball school and if they can tie in with the Chicago Public schools could easily get back to success. Going to take greasing some palms and being more like Self in his hungry years.

Exactly. Just when the conference is beginning to show some life, people would prefer it to dip back down. Par for the course.

I think it's a weird fit. Oats is a hard core Yankee who to my knowledge has not recruited the South.

With Alabama's budget he can recruit from anywhere he wants. You're not going to make the final four with a roster full players who grew up in Alabama anyway.

He was able to get P5 talent to Buffalo. Do you think it will be harder to get P5 talent to Alabama? And he's not winning on recruiting alone like Mark Turgeon at Maryland. Oats can coach.

I agree with that. Reading that Athletic article was astounding. Details, buy in and commitment. He is good for the MAC. I hope Jeff hits the recruiting trail hard and gets some studs in here who want to be here. Best arena, best fan base, best campus, best weather....build it and they will come. Swing for the fences.
