Bobcats hire one alum as head coach and cause another alum to be hired as head coach. OHIO--taking care of a few of its graduates!

Man. Great news bad news there. Great to see Geno Ford back in a head coaching role. Happy for him. Wish him great success. Bad news for my hopes for him to follow Boals here and work some recruiting magic. We need recruiting magic right now.

I may be the only one who was not in favor of Geno coming to OHIO. My reasoning is based on his behavior/issues while at both Kent & Bradley.

Maybe I'm mistaken... but didn't Geno also coach at Muskingum?

I'm glad he's getting that opportunity again, and hope this time around goes much better than the Bradley gig.

I am curious though - what about Geno's past coaching experience gives the idea he'd be able to "work some recruiting magic" for Ohio? (assuming he'd come with Coach Boals)

I just don't like hiring guys bc they are alumni. I've said it before; if Boals is the best man for the job, I'm glad to have him, but I certainly hope we didn't hire him because he played for us in 1995. Recruits aren't interested in that.

Let’s talk to Tommy Freeman and Gary Trent. I know Trent sounds like a wild card but he is very respected and would kill it recruiting wise. Tommy has been around and he would be a great recruiter and I believe that him being a recent glue guy will help piece a successful team together.

I like the idea of Tommy as a coach, and I think he'll do well, especially as a shooting instructor, because his form and effort perfecting it seemed to be his strength. I'm curious though, like I asked about Geno a few posts above, what leads anyone to think either of them would "kill it" in recruiting?

Tommy has Indiana connections and connections to Hargrave. Trent has been in May different circles with his son and he is a legend in Columbus. Like I said, if Gary Trent is sitting in my living room or texting me, I am listening. He trained himself and his son, he also worked with one of his son’s friends that was drafted number 6 or 7 overall to the Bulls. Trent would also help increase attendance.

One of the new assistants already has Hargrave ties.

Again, if he weren't an alum, would he be the best man for the job?

Seems fair. I wonder about Trent, but the angle you play with his son makes a ton of sense. At first, I looked at it and said - "no one cares or remembers about Gary Trent in the 90's" - in terms of current young people as recruits. But, using your other examples makes more sense.

I don’t see how Trent being an assistant coach would increase attendance!

The basketball dad’s are Trent’s age so they remember him. Trent also has a good testimony. Every time I mention Ohio basketball, Trent’s name comes up. In another 10-15 years, he may become somewhat irrelevant. I think the intrigue in both Trent and Boals will increase attendance initially, but we need to put an exciting product on the floor and win.

Believe you may be thinking of his dad, Gene, who still coaches there.

I do believe that Geno spent a year or two at Muskingum coaching basketball.

Shawnee (1 year) and Muskingum (2 years)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geno_Ford

What I'm confused about is what about his behavior at Kent/Bradley would lead you to not want him around Athens?

There was a dust-up in terms of his buyout when he left Kent for Bradley ... and from it sounds like, Kent is the instigator in all of that ... which appears to be ongoing.

https://www.record-courier.com/news/20171017/kent-state-a...

This was a quote from a Cleveland PD article on Ford's time at Kent:

"Ford seemed like a very good guy in his time at Kent State. He was respected by the players and the administration. His Flashes won the last two Mid-American Conference regular-season titles and had a 68-37 record in three seasons."

That's not a guy you'd want around your MAC basketball program ... especially as an alum?

I know things didn't work out at Bradley ... but that happens to coaches. I don't think he handled himself poorly though?

Geno followed the legendary Jim Burson for two years then Gene, his dad took over. His last year was 2015.
