Opens with wins at George Washington and South Carolina. Not too shabby...not too shabby at all. #StonyBrook #PayAttention

Huge road wins. Saul better have a good year or we may be in a bidding war.

I'd love nothing more than to see Coach Boals back roaming the Convo. But, if that was the direction we were going to go we could have done it when we hired Saul.

Hiring former OU guys has never been Schaus' MO and my gut says if we move on from Saul this won't be the direction we go again.

Sad but true.

Just out of curiosity, what makes people think that Boals would actually be interested in coaching at Ohio after how his former coach and mentor, Larry Hunter, was treated near the end of his tenure at Ohio?

A complete non-factor. The people responsible for ending the Hunter era are long gone. If I'm Coach Boals, I'm more irritated that I wasn't a serious contender four years ago for the Ohio job.

Schaus heavily dislikes hiring Ohio guys. It's only when his hand is forced to do so he will. Even on the business side, he dislikes it with a passion.

I'd give it very little chance. We just aren't that big of a step up from Stony Brook for him to move here.

#1. Step up means less when you're an alum (not saying it means nothing, just less). #2, as Fear said, it's not like Tom Boeh is still running the athletic department #3. Schaus has always preferred to hire folks with head coaching experience. Whether you think Saul has underachieved or had back luck or some combination of both, that was a great hire, that no one complained about at the time.

If Boals understood that, that might be what drew him to Stony Brook to make a more official audition for a job with his alma mater or any another job.

Currently we are close to a $500k step up

Off topic, but from the business perspective this is horribly misguided. Alums of the school would have the most passion to make sure the AD succeeds and know how the fan base and town thinks. I'm curious why this is the case?

Some really, really good points made in this thread. I have no idea what Boals is making at Stony Brook, but I know it's not 500K. I have a hard time believing he wouldn't consider coming home for a huge pay raise and to recruit a state where he has excellent connections.

Updated Boals Salary: $258,968

Groce had zero head coaching experience when he was hired by Schaus in June 2008. That seemed to work out pretty well.

You guys are too quick to spend OHIO's money--Go with the budget plan and take the Stoneybrook assistant--that's the guy to get!

So if that's what he's making and JS thinks he's the best hire, there's no reason to offer 500K.

Speculative nonsense. The guy wins two road games and he's the savior. We have no business trying to join the arms race of coaches salaries. We would be in a world of hurt if it wasn't for the student fees. We should be paying 250ish tops. Even if we get some hotshot coach and pay him 1M, we don't schedule to elevate our program. Don't waste the money.

The current staff may not schedule to your liking but that doesn't mean a new staff wouldn't.

No Thanks. If he's on the hypothetical Boals coaching staff, fine, but there's very little to excite me about Geno as HC.

Something I've wondered for a long time - why aren't more Ohio Sports Management graduates hired into the Ohio Athletic Department? Instead, we get folks who are on a 2-year stop off in Athens coming from half a country away. Seems odd.

I’m assuming having to deal with the final few Carbone years was a turn off to future alum hires

Maybe Schaus should go? How many Reese trophies have we won under his leadership/hires?

I would take Boals over Saul in a heartbeat!!

I would almost guarantee our next head coach will be paid mid-level MAC money, at best. The new administration, regardless of any lip service they might give, is no friend to Ohio Athletics. But as they say, you get what you pay for.

Finally, someone else willing to present this question. I'm not calling for anyone's job, but seems logical that the AD who hires coaches ought to have questions asked when things aren't going well.
