Go to Youtube and find any of your favorite music videos of the 1970s, 1980s, etc and you will find tons of comments about how great times were and how each poster wished he or she could go back in time. We know that can't happen with Bobcat or MAC basketball, but 2012, 1994, 1986, 1983 and those magical seasons of he early 1970s and 1964, that Ohio Cat Fan has reminisced about (but before most of our times,) sure seem to carry a lot of mystical memories. Yet, we know they can't be duplicated because everything, including the might of the Power Conferences, and transfer rules have made those magical seasons beyond duplication. Another way has to be found.

We can sing Foreigner's; That was Yesterday, Dokken's; In My Dreams or even the Carpenter's Yesterday Once More, but it won't make it happen. This brings us to the O' Jay's; For the Love of Money, which helps encapsulate what helped make non-Power Conference success seemingly impossible. Every time a Cinderella school makes a move, their coach gets seemingly lured away. Some may wonder why Coach Nate Oates would go to football powerhouse Alabama? Why not, Coach Oates can make a ton more than he could at Buffalo and yet he plays in the SEC with only a smidgen of the pressure that Nick Saban's football team experiences. I would be curious if one could ask Alabama fans at the football home opener who their basketball coach is; how many would even know? I use to tell people that when Thad Matta was still Ohio State's basketball coach, he faced less scrutiny and uproar after a sub par season than Urban Meyer faced after a sub par win against a Big Ten foe. It is hard for us in the MAC to compete against that kind of money machine.

Coach Boals no sooner walks through the door than he gets saddled with a transfer rule that is designed to help the Power Conferences. Again something that is relatively new. Just imagine if he does become successful beyond our wildest dreams. How long would he stay? In the social media age, TV ratings aren't what they once were for sports. The power conferences don't mind an occasional Cinderella, which is good for ratings, but they need their teams in the mix to drive up ratings. In the meantime, conferences like the MAC need to devise a strategy that can keep coaches and not lead to mid major instability.
