Article by Arkley says that per the AD's office, the contract will be "comparable" to previous coach.

Arkley on the buyout- "Presumably, Ohio will be on the hook for $50,000 per the buyout clause in Boals’ contract at Stony Brook."
That's highway robbery for a buyout.....not bad at all.

Why has bashing Arkley become the new pastime here on BA. The guy's a good writer. He covers OHIO sports very well and in some detail. He writes more stories than nearly any other reporter for the Athens Messenger. Just because he didn't agree with the decision to dismiss Saul, some here have decided he's fair game to hurl all kinds of insults at. I just don't get it.

Hope Boals succeeds but he was 31-33 prior to this season as head coach. Saul had a great year prior to becoming Ohio's head coach too.

And I supported Saul when he was hired too. In fact I NEVER called for him to be fired. Now I did question whether he was winning enough (he wasn't) but that was it. I liked, still do like, Saul. He just wasn't getting it done here for whatever reasons. We had to move on.

I'm absolutely ecstatic over the Boals hire. Mostly because I know him personally and played for him so I'm biased - but I think/hope he brings this program back to where it should be. I think he's qualified enough to do it. Whether he actually DOES remains to be seen.

Now if only we could get people like Jason to support the new hire as well (the same courtesy we all offered Saul) instead of crying about losing his best friend then we can "grow up" and move on.

I'm not holding my breath *shrugs*.

I can't wait to see what Jeff's deal is and the actual buyout clause that was in his previous contract as well as his OU contract.
I am also optimistic that we will not loose any players to transfer.
I am very optimistic that our program will improve under Jeff. I have always thought that having a coach who also played for his alma mater was an advantage in the recruiting process.
Jeff played physical basketball and his picks where legendary. He will instill a new tough minded mentality in our players, which was missing under Saul.

"his picks were legendary"

Guys like VanderPlas that were raised as a coach's son will welcome that kind of coaching. I wonder what kind of approach to guards the assistant will bring. Someone has to address the shooting. Abysmal numbers that should be easy to raise with a little motivation and direction. Anyone who has KenPom know what Stony Brook shot from the last coaching staff through the present?

It might not be a bad thing for this program to loose (or is it lose?) 2 or 3 players.

For next couple of years, it would be best if Jordy, JC, BVP, Preston, Kirk, Murrell and Cowart decide to stick around and play for Boals.

Last coach was pretty good in the W column. Currently at Rutgers now and is getting ready for what I think will be a monstrous Year 4.

Will get stats shortly and update this post.

Arkley was in in mourning over Saul... He completely missed all of this, just like he missed the reasons why Saul was not retained. Oh well he now can go back to bashing Trump every 3rd tweet.
You guys need to move on. Good God, it's simple - quit following and/or reading Arkely's work if you don't like it. There are in fact other options out there.

Do you have to defend everyone and everything out there? Are you like a Message Board Avenger? I love your hoop takes, your passion for Ohio- but I can't stand that you are always in defense mode for any one out there.

At the end of the day this is my opinion- and a quick comment on a message board. No different than it was his opinion in his "Saul was screwed" op-ed.

I know I can go elsewhere- and I do... I usually avoid him because his feed is a nightmare. (I am a "stick to sports" person- I know that's out of style but I prefer to not mix sports and politics from the folks I follow)

OK I am done... I'll let you get back out to the busy streets of Bobcat Attack so you can protect other fine citizens from opinionated takes! LOL

Fair take, fair point. The truth is that after awhile, I get sick of excessive negativity, and so that's the reason for my "Avenger-ness". Make I'll change make avatar to be something like a green & white Captain Marvel, or Captain America. ;)

While I haven't been thrilled about all of Arkley's posts on the coaching situation, given the current state of journalism/newspapers, I would not want to be in his shoes. The Plain Dealer in Cleveland just announced another round of layoffs. The print media continues to downsize to levels that I didn't think were possible. We need to be thankful the Messenger still has a local beat reporter covering the Bobcats on a regular basis. I still read his stuff and am for the most part very pleased with it.

Regarding Boals, the funniest thing I read (and I forget where) was that in his bio it said "he led" the Bobcats to a 1994 NCAA tournament appearance. Umm....I think Mr. Trent had more to do with that, although I always respected Boals' game. He flat out laid out some players with his picks. He busted his butt on the court and was certainly an integral part of those teams. I also liked in his press conference his reference to Coach Hunter.

As an alum, I'm excited and I get the sense that Schaus succeeded in one respect in that it's generated a lot of excitement. How this turns out remains to be seen.

I believe you saw that on the Stoney Brook website. He was a captain in 93-94, ergo he led the Bobcats. Just sayin'

If anyone doubts Boals importance, just look at what the Cat's did after Jeff went down the following year. People who were around that team knew who the glue guy was, the real leader of that ball club.
