I think Buffalo is very good but I still think they'll lose 2-4 MAC games, including one in Athens.
I said this in another thread a while back, but SP actually has a good record against Buffalo. Even in his first year here (when Ohio went 10-20) Ohio beat them and Buffalo eventually won the MAC tournament.

2014-15: 1-1 (won by 2 at home, lost by 27 on the road)

2015-16: 2-0 (won by 19 on the road, won by 7 in OT at home)

2016-17: 1-1 (won by 2 on the road, lost by 4 at home)
That road win was Tony's last full game in a Bobcat uniform.

2017-18: 0-2 (lost by 7 at home, lost by 26 on the road)

EDIT: forgot we lost in the MAC Tournament Semis to Buffalo in 2015-16. So his overall record against Buffalo is 4-5.

Has any other school tried to offer Nate a position?
He signed a new deal last year where he can make close to one million per year with incentives and the buyout for another is huge, it was one million last year. Buffalo structures the deal in a great way, but somebody will pay an extra 600k after this year, Buffalo in turn will have a free coach for a year with the 600k buyout that they will receive. https://buffalonews.com/2018/03/18/analysis-new-extension... /

My favorite player on the Buffalo team is Davonta Jordan, his defense is phenomenal. They have 6 guards and three forwards that could start on any MAC team. The coach just reloads, he doesn’t recruit projects, their four star recruit can’t even get 10 minutes per game and they signed two Juco players to challenge him next year. There is no stArt forever, you have to earn your spot yearly.

Good article, thanks for posting. Who on BA is always whining about the offers recruits get? Or don't get? And then making a judgement on ability? From the article:

"Leading scorer C.J. Massinburg, meanwhile, had just one Division I offer, from Prairie View A&M"

Massinburg is a player. 25, 7 & 5 tonight.

So, are you comparing Massinburg to Springs? Or James? Or . . . ?
Um, no. Are you saying the "look at the offers strategy" only applies to Ohio University basketball?
Agree with you, Grover. That was the main reason for griping against Jay Preston..." he only has offers from Longwood and Maryland Eastern Shore."
I get it now. It's Preston that's being compared to Massinburg.

Compare players all you want but that was not what I was suggesting. On the BA recruiting thread posters "evaluate" many players according to their other offers. I was simply using Massinburg as an example that questions that strategy. You seem intent on starting a different argument, feel free but don't pretend it was mine.

That win at home was the Maurice Ndour last second full court play that sent Bobby Hurley into a press conference tizzy. He cried about Saul being on the court during the play but replays showed that Hurley was farther onto the court than Saul was. I miss Hurley.

We took a 10th man off a JUCO TEAM with a bad foot. Oats wouldn’t do that if he was coaching Denison. He beats majors out for recruits and sometime he finds a diamond in the rough.

Well at least you've sort of addressed my point. You seem to imply you think Oats is a good recruiter. You also argue he sometimes "finds a diamond in the rough" (sic: a player without high offers), so the strategy of evaluating players based on their offers is a poor one, right?

You do your own evaluation, to can recruit players with no offers, but if you come up snake eyes, you usually get fired.

buffalo is good team this year. I think they will get to the elite 8. they won,t be able to get to final four. that is due to the following reasons duke, kentucky Kansas, north Carolina, Michigan and Michigan state and tennesee and Gonzaga. one of teams will be in buffalos bracket and when that game comes it will most certainly end their season. they,re a msolid team but not enough beat any of those teams. they definitely have an advantage over all mac teams in that buffalo is by far the largest city in the conference. they will have a great year this year that will help with recruiting in the reat of the conference

No way Buffalo loses four games in the MAC. I'd put the over/under at 2. And what in the world does the committee do if Buffalo goes 33-1 and ranked 9th in the country after MAC Championship? Where do you seed them?

If that 1 loss is at Marquette, I think they'd end up higher than 9th...and the committee would probably give them a 3 seed.

I know the MAC doesn't offer another team anywhere close to Buffalo this year, but I also think it doesn't really have many if any truly terrible teams. Lots of 100-150 type teams. I see Ohio, Miami, Kent, Akron & Toledo all tough road games. Lose a few of those and throw in a stunning off night stinker and it could happen, but that is why I guessed 2-4.

Watching buffalo vs Marquette. They might not win this but they sure are fun to watch. Well coached, they run, athletic, quick, play hard, take the ball to the rim. Just an exciting brand of basketball. The players on their roster would fit right into the big 10 or big east. Watching us is like watching basketball from the 1950's compared to them.

It's only one loss - and it's on the road against a top 20 Marquette team...but $20 says Buffalo drops from 14 all the way to about 22/23 with this loss. Maybe even 24-25 since it's going to be a double-digit loss.

Hope I'm wrong but MAC teams don't get the benefit of the doubt.

I hope you are wrong too but even if they drop to 19, they are still better than a lot of the teams from 18-10. My guess is if the roles were reversed and they played Purdue and we played Marquette, Buffalo might still be undefeated. Whereas the Big Ten's own studio crew thought they would finish 8-10th in the Big Ten and be a NCAA Bubble team, Marquette was projected to finish 2nd in the Big East.

Marquette was 18 of 29 from 3. That is insane. And 19 of 22 at the line.

Nice article on Massinburg and motivation https://theathletic.com/736038/2018/12/28/buffalos-c-j-ma... / I saw posted up there ^^^^^^

If I did not like him before I am a career following fan after this comment. " “In college, everyone scored 20 in high school, so you have to be able to play whatever role you have to in order to get on the court,’’ he says. “I don’t think enough people understand that. I knew once I got a chance, I could score. I just had to get the chance.’’ He got it by playing defense. " The article seems to imply Oats got lucky and the kid needed the offer more than Oats needed him. Sent an asst out here to Indy to look at him to fill a roster left bare after Hurley left. Sometimes it is better to be lucky than good.

I can not remember too many conversations with kids over the years....including the one with a young man in the Convo on Saturday when I did not say "how's your defense? That's how you get your playing time". We can all read how many they put up on East Podunk on Friday night... what we do not know is if their assignment is going to put up 3 buckets for each one the recruit puts up. That was a really nice kid and his Pops Sat. BTW.

buffalo has a great chance for an at large bid this year. they have potential to win a game or two but ounce in but they will not make the final four. this due to the following reasons. duke, kansas Kentucky, north carolina, tennesee, Gonzaga, michigan state and Virginia. As soliod as buffalo looks they have not the horse power needed to beat those teams. I wonder which team is better this buffalo team the kent state elite eight team?
