buffalo is very good this year. they could potentially be in the top 10. has any mac done that ever? cj massinburg is a bona fide nba prospect they definitely have an advantage over mac teams due to buffalo being the largest city in the mac.

They have Syracuse and Marquette coming up. I'm very curious to see how they fare with those two. I think they are both certainly winnable ... but they could both go a long way in determining if they are an at-large team. Split and I think that gives them a little wiggle room (like 14-4 at worst, maybe?) in the MAC.

OHIO was in the Top 10 . . . for a week or so one season in that late 1960s after beating four BigTen teams in December.

OhioCat Fan et al; didn't Rick Pitino say we could be a Final Four team after we nearly beat Kentucky in late November 1994, which followed us getting 3rd place in the Preseason NIT Tournament beating Ohio State and a host of other teams during that famous run?

Ohio won that pre-season NIT, didn't it, winning at o$u and UVa before winning two games at MSG in NYC?

Yes, won at Ohio State and Virginia, beat Georgia Washington and then beat New Mexico State in overtime for the title. Followed up with five-point loss at Kentucky. Ranked as high as #14.

I think they might be the best MAC team I've ever seen, which dates back to 1995-96. It still amazes me that Nate Oats didn't end up elsewhere - Pitt for example - after last year.

I put the over/under on conference losses for Buffalo this year at 1.5. If Ohio can't dance, I hope the Bulls go a long, long way.

I don't recall his exact words, but he said he was very impressed, and as a result wanted to schedule a game in Athens, which UK did. Unfortunately, he was gone by the time the game was played, and OHIO managed to have its weakest team in several decades that year.

UpSan is correct. We were #14 after winning the 1994 Pre-Season NIT and the close 5 pt loss at UK (I still have the USA Today newspaper clipping with the polls). If we pulled the last 3 minutes out in Lexington we would have been Top 10 for sure. How that team didn't even win the MAC or make the NCAA (ultimately losing to Iowa in the 95 post-season NIT) is still baffling to me. Damn Eastern Michigan and Jeff Boals knee. Of course, then Trent left.

As for the return game in 1997 - Pitino and Trent had both moved to the NBA by then with Pitino coaching the Boston Celtics. And yes, we got to endure the Wilderness Campaign. The beginning of the end of the Hunter era at Ohio IMO.

Jim Peterson and Chet Feldman say hi!

#ThreadDrift - did any group of Ohio recruits ever come with more national ranking / hype, yet do so little in their tenure than the trio of Sanjay Adell, Corey Reed and Diante Flenorl?

IMO, Sanjay was pretty darn good. The other two, Flenorl was ok. Corey Reed was fascinating though. I've never seen a guy so quick that in 4 years couldn't figure out a jump shot.

I'm with you. I can't see many scenarios where they lose more than 2 MAC games. They're at Toledo, but don't have to go to Ball State. Beyond that, at Ohio, Akron, Miami, and Kent are the toughest conference games they have on the road. They also host Toledo early in the MAC season. Is it realistic to assume they'll win 4 of those 6, and run the rest of the table? I think so.

The return game with Ohio was already agreed upon before Ohio played at Rupp.

Pitino is his postgame was asked about playing in Athens and he responded "Yeah ... we'll come down there ... when Trent is gone."

Sure enough they did ... without Pitino and with Tubby Smith off a national runner-up.

Convo was packed ... 13,083 .... one of biggest crowds I'd ever seen in there. Might be best non-conference team they've ever hosted ... and will ever again is my guess.

"I would rather go to the dentist than play Ohio University", as printed in the USAToday recap of the game.

Let's revisit that thought in March when they are squarely "on the bubble" if they don't win in Cleveland.

If they beat Marquette and Syracuse it would take a pretty monumental collapse to not earn an at-large bid.

Two wins there and they might be Top Ten (not saying they're definitely one of the ten best ... but at #14 now, they'll only continue to rise)

They'd have to go 12-6 or 11-7 in MAC to not earn a bid if they go unbeaten in non-conf with wins at Syracuse, Marquette and WVU

I'll believe it when I see it. The NCAA tourney selection committee is good at finding ways to snub mid majors every year.

Seconded. If UB went 12-6 in the MAC, there's no way in hell they're getting an at-large with any selection committee. I have no faith in that group at all until they prove otherwise.

Buffalo this year is what Ohio would have been 2012-13 if Groce slid under the radar one more year with everyone back and Lavert & Bradds joining.

Were Dave Jamerson and Snoopy Graham in the same recruiting class? If not, one year apart? Both were NBA draft picks with very little team success at Ohio under Billy Hahn.

An astute observation I do believe.
