Any official word, or even "word on the street" about his status for next year? The last I heard, which was a while back, he was trying to come back and he was healing from his injury but it wasn't clear if he'd have the medical OK to return to competition. I also recall there was some speculation (no actual facts) that his return might be conditional on Saul being retained, as he was said to be very loyal to Saul. So what have you heard?

What I’ve heard from a reliable source: he liked Saul as a person but not coach. His loyalty is to Ohio University. He hasn’t practiced but he’s doing everything he can to play next year.

The prospect of getting Dartis back feels like glimmer of hope for our chances next year

A guard duo of a healthy Darty and a yesr older Preston would be a nice start for Boals. Throw in a stretch like BVP and it is a trio that is solid in the MAC. Would we win a MAC title with just them? No, but not a bad trio.

This is the kind of attitude I wish more student-athletes would strive for. Pick a school, not a coach.

Jordy may be one of my favorite players of all-time for that reason alone.

Everything I've been told since November from close friends to family to high school coach is that Jordie loves the campus and the university and that he was more likely to stay for his final year if coach was let go rather than returning for another year. Nothing I've heard recently changes that. He'll be back for a fifth season in 2019-20.

+1

And thanks for everyone's input. It gives me a better sense of the situation. Here's hoping to see Dartis back in green and white for next basketball season. I completely agree that one's loyalty should be to the school first and the coach second, but I realize that that's not always the way it actually works.

Making all scholarships 4 years (or 5 to graduate) rather than renewable at the sole discretion of the coach and university would be a solid step to assuring allegiance, That way if a coach leaves, players do not feel they have e lost a needed ally.

Heard the same through a secondary (though credible) source.

I would concur with this thought. The obligation should go both ways. A scholarship (actually a financial aid package) should only be revocable for a breech of the student code of conduct (which should be in writing) or failure to maintain adequate grades, which bar could be set higher than NCAA standards by the institution and/or conference.

I agree with the concept of a 4 year scholarship.

But I think it really needs to be more both ways then OCF said.

If a school makes a 4 year commitment,so should the student.

That would mean that,if a student leaves early, without a degree ,except under pre-specified criteria, his scholarship is locked up until his class graduates.

That would, among other things ,kill one and dones and get in true student athletes.

I know the NCAA will never consider it.

Got to get those March Madness ratings.

But one can hope.

Unfortunately, or fortunately, the NCAA is becoming more and more relaxed with players transferring and becoming immediately eligible. And I think this is going to hit mid majors harder than schools from the major conferences.

The good news is, according to the NYTimes, graduate transfer rules may soon be toughened. If a kid graduate transfers to Ohio St., for example for the 19-20 school year, plays that year, but does not get his graduate degree by the end of the school year, Ohio St. would lose a scholarship for a year.

I'm of two minds here. On the surface, I like this proposal. But we all talk about how kids are supposed to graduate. Once he graduates, it can be argued he has done what he came to school to do, and should be free to move on without penalty.

As I understand it, this proposal would only affect W & M basketball, and football.

brucecuth, I'm of a single mind about this proposal. I like it. Graduating from graduate school is a whole separate thing from obtaining your undergraduate degree. If you have your bachelor's degree in hand, and you do a graduate transfer, you need to graduate from the school with your master's or the whole thing is a sham, which I'm afraid it has been in certain cases in the recent pass.

It would seem that, depending on the degree, completing an MA/MS in one year, especially with a thesis would be tough.

I could see giving 2 years before losing a scholarship.

This is a good point, but the bottom line is that he or she needs to complete the degree or the institution forfeits a scholarship the following year. That would keep the system honest.
