If you're old enough, you may remember Ulice Payne who played for Ohio and later got a championship ring at Marquette in '77. Then a law degree at Marquette and a Masters of Law at U. London.
In 2002, he made history when he became the first African American to head up a Major League Baseball franchise. With his appointment to the role of CEO and president of the Milwaukee Brewers, Payne landed at number 14 on Sports Illustrated’s list of “101 Most Influential Minorities in Sports.”
Anyone remember a few Bobcat fans yelling "Bring in Ulice" during the late Bandy years?
Thanks for the information about Ulice Payne. I was not aware of all of the things he had done after Marquette championship. Very impressive!
There was another highly regarded recruit in that class, or maybe the one after it: Larry Slappy. I can't remember exactly what happened to him. I think he only played one year, and showed promised but didn't quite live up to his reputation. These high-profile recruits were toward the end of Snyder's career. It was kind of ironic that at the point in his career when he could sign what would today be five-star recruits, his style was such that once signed he could not relate to some of them. He was so used to working with the "diamond's in the rough" kind of guys that he had trouble with the prima donna types. Though his later work, as you described so well, is very impressive, I heard at the time that Ulice in his college years was a load to handle. Kind of marched to beat of his own drum, and not necessarily the beat of the coach's drum, so to speak.
