If he can be in the Top 8 and someone like Kuany or Evans can be the 9th (and a big) then we can slow roll guys like Fisher and Kelly. Optimistic!
If Burris can just be another shooter in the mix and create spacing, it's a win for next season's roster.

I see where the comp comes from appreciate the caution, but Nicol didn't compete in any summer league to our knowledge (?) let alone put up 30ppg. Nice thing is, we don't need Burris to be a significant contributor, just a contributor. We couldn't even get the latter out of Nicol.

Totally agree......hopefully the Summer League is a big indicator difference from Nicol.

Did anyone see the team picture they always take with chains in the weight room? JJ Kelly looks like he is a senior. He is ready physically and can jump out of the gym. I don't know if he can shoot or handle the ball well (HS highlights seemed to show he could pass) but man, he can at least bang a bit.

I will say the same thing about Evans that we said about Burris: If we even get half of this production it will be a success. Ayden had flashes last year of potential but seemed lost and just freshman weak at times. With Simmons, Breath and Hadaway we will need an athletic post because those 3, while spending time in the post, aren't true bigs like Evans.

No, he explicitly said any level past high school. In his mind he might mean high major or lottery pick level talent, but that's not what he said.

This seems as much a commentary on the American amateur system in general as it is about the quality of basketball in public high school programs.

This is the next line: "They're wasting three hours of their day doing s**t at that school that's not benefitting them and they're getting behind the eight ball." Presumably the three hours is school -- though, I seem to remember school lasting longer than that each day.

But, he's probably not wrong that for the best athletes a system more akin to the European academy set up makes more sense. It's already in place in the US for plenty of Olympic sports and soccer.

And here I thought people I know driving 2 1/2 hours one way on a Sunday just for an 10-12 year old's club soccer game was excessive. This conversation is making me feel old.

This is happening all over the place. I had one friend move his kid to Michigan for high school for hockey purposes and lived apart from him. Another the homeschool route as you mentioned.

And many times it is for not even elite athletes. Kids & parents are incapable of having a proper perspective on just how good pro athletes are, and how difficult it is to become one. I know this has always been around but the increasing prevalence and lengths to which families are willing to go is just insane.

I agree. Proper perspective is missing on just how good a player has to be to be a pro in any sport ... it's also missing on the evaluation end. The best player in middle/high school does not mean the best player in college or even professional.

Looking back, most of us have seen/known players with 'pro' skills, but lacked other aspects for success at that level. It's a whole lot more to being a pro than height/weight/speed.

Almost every time I travel, there are young athletes on club teams staying at my hotel. The most amazing thing I’ve seen was a team from Mongolia at a Mongolian basketball tournament in Seattle. They looked like high school students to me. There is actually a pro Mongolian basketball league in Seattle and a friend who lived in Mongolia for years says that’s a major sport there.

In the immortal words of a former Ohio State QB: “I ain’t come here to play no school.” That’s what’s wrong with U.S. education and what’s wrong with college sports. We’ve professionalized college sports, next it’ll be junior high students demanding NIL money to play for their school or they’ll transfer to somewhere that will pay them. A previous poster said this thread was making them seem old. It makes me fell sick. We’ve really opened up a Pandora’s box.

NIL is in almost 50% of US states for youth now.

Yes middle schoolers. Youth athletes always could because they are not part of any larger governing body. Remember some states allow 7th graders to play varsity sports.

Two of the states that allow Middle Schoolers are right in our back yard.
