I've got some insight into last year's renewal. The AD had taken a hard look at the culture of the women's program. She was especially interested in the student-athlete experience, which prior to Boldon was horrific. They reached out to former players going back more than 30 years and found that a majority regretted their decision to play at Ohio due to terrible coaching (including some issues that could have led to litigation against the university) and inadequate support from the university. The current AD wants to change that. They found that virtually all alumni and current players who have played for Boldon LOVE him. He is a true player's coach and emphasizes all elements of the student-athlete experience, including academic support, mental health services, etc. So, given this feedback, coupled with the fact that he HAS been successful on the court over much of his tenure in Athens, she renewed him last year. No big raise, just a renewal to allow him to get the program back on its feet. It's damned unfortunate that he lost a few very talented players to larger schools, but that's the reality of mid-major programs. It's also unfortunate that the program was hit with a spate of serious injuries this year. The guy can recruit and he can coach. And now, finally, he has the support of the university to further improve the program culture. As one example, the university just completed perhaps the only fundraising program ever focused on women's basketball, paying for the upgrade of the women's locker room and showers, which hadn't been touched since the building was erected in 1968.
