Well, there goes our APR.

Seriously, I don't really understand why this young man never developed. Was it lack of basic skill-level? If that's the case it means his talent was not properly assessed at the time of his signing. Or, was it lack of development from a personal motivational level or from an inability of our coaching staff to "coach him up" as happened with the legendary KVK? I'm simply asking questions here, I don't really have a clue what the correct answer is. All I know is that it's puzzling to me that he never panned out. I was lead to believe when he came to Ohio that with a few years of good coaching and adjustment to the college game we'd have a real solid college center, who also was rumored to actually have a good outside touch. None of this materialized, and I'd be interested in others assessments as to why.

As long as he left in good academic standing he won't hurt our APR.

I think he did have the outside touch you mentioned but appeared to be a complete liability on Defense which is more than likely why he couldn't get on the floor. He also wasn't very strong so he couldn't hold position on the block. I have no idea if he had a post up game. I think it was a reach on a true 7 footer who had some athletic ability and he just didn't develop the skill set necessary to see any PT. It didn't pan out here but I bet with a drop down in competition level he will contribute.

KVK really took off about midway through his junior year when they put him at a high post on offense so he wasn't always banging into bigger bodies underneath. That helped save some strength for defense.

Jacobs' problem was either conditioning (he always seemed slow getting up and down the floor) or mental (maybe he just wasn't seeing the situation and responding quick enough). Anyway, I hope he does well at Colgate.

I don't think of any of us can pinpoint what the hold up was in Jacob's development. We can say what we observed in his couple dozen minutes of junk time in the Convo...but that would be wildly unfair. The answer to the question could only answered by his coaches, teammates and anyone else who was around all those countless practices.

Sometimes they develop and turn into KVK.

Sometimes they don't and turn into Andy Kanzig.

We were also sort of forced to use KVK his freshman year. Without him, we would have only gone six deep with either having both Tillman and Williams starting with no backup bigs or Tillman subbing for Williams again.

KVK was a contributor even as a reserve during his freshman and sophmore year. He blossomed into a starter in his junior year and was a big reason we won the 2010 MAC tournament and beat Georgetown. KVK improved dramatically thruout his career.

Jacobs never saw the minutes as a freshmen and sophmore like KVK. Nagtzaam or Bota is a closer comparison than KVK.

He may have preferred the high post but he was no slouch in the low post either. He worked hard to get deep position and when he did he would hit you with his turn around hook shot. It was a pretty effective move his Senior year.

I fondly recall a game against some Ivy League team (Cornell?) KVK's freshman year when he dropped 18ish points. I thought TOS was leading us to the promised land. I wasn't even in college at that point.

One point of clarification, my sarcastic comment about APR was in reference to what I heard was Jacobs' 3.9 GPA. If true, I doubt we have too many other players who can step up and equal that GPA. No, I don't think we will be getting into any real trouble due to his transferring. Like the rest, I do wish him well in his future endeavors at Colgate and wherever his life journeys may take him.

No matter his role or results, Jacobs seemed to be genuinely enthused as he watched from the bench.
