How about Nick Van Excel to UC ?
You're about the 4th person to mention Nicky V for the job. My question is this: Why would UC want him - besides on his name as a great player in the history of UC? To my knowledge, he has never coached in College/D1, and therefore has never had to recruit, which means no recruiting ties that established coaches have. I'm obviously a Bearcat fan, and have memories of Van Exel as a player before I was ever an Ohio student, but I can't see the appeal of him as a coach.
He's an assistant somewhere in the NBA. He's an alum. That's all I got. Lol.

Here's one to think about: Earl Grant, College of Charleston Head Coach.
He's currently on the staff of the Memphis Grizzlies.

I loved Nick as a player that defined a golden era for UC hoops. However, I think that it could be an awkward fit for the university. It would definitely create some buzz at the time of the hire but if things were to go south could tarnish his rapport with the entire UC nation and that's the last thing I would want for him.

While not Duke or Kentucky, UC is still an upper tier program that has pretty high expectations. I think Mike Bohn needs to hire someone with proven merit.

Personally, I think it's John Brannen's to lose as most of UC's recent hires have come from regional programs (Luke Fickell from OSU, Michelle Clark-Heard from Western Kentucky).

As a UC fan I have kind of mixed feelings on the whole situation. Cronin deserves a ton of credit for putting the team back to its current perch, but I also think he had a ceiling that was as much of his own doing as it was the conference the Bearcats play in. I am interested to see what someone else can do with the team and a different style of play. Also pleased to hear that Samari Curtis is still committed to the Bearcats.

I'm in agreement with those who say Van Exel as the head coach isn't a good idea. Good reasons mentioned here.

I also think Brannen might be the best option right now, unless they somehow could lure someone away from a P6 conference job that fits the bill.

Lastly, I don't think the conference has anything to do with it. The AAC, while not as good as the B1G, ACC, SEC, etc., is a really good conference save the bottom couple teams. And I think that logic applies in almost every conference. UC, Houston, Temple, UCF, SMU, Memphis are all good basketball programs - better than several at the bottom of P6 conferences. The only thing they don't have is the B1G TV money, and the name recognition.

Cronin probably hasn't done himself any favors by referring to UCLA as "John Wooden's program." https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaab/2019/04/10/mi... /
It's tough enough having to compete against the ghost of a legend. Invoking his name just makes it tougher.

Love Mick Cronin. I just don't see how this fits. UCLA got desperate because they botched this search from the beginning.
UC Botched retaining him as well. Mick WAS CINCINNATI BASKETBALL. My view is that the AD and Administration took for granted the idea that he wasn't leaving because it was his Alma mater. They spend 80 million dollars renovating their arena, and then they're dumb enough to make it easy for him to leave by not offering an improved contract when the new arena opens? That's not good business in my book.
I don't know if there is a number that Cincinnati could have matched any way. It's UCLA. It's on the list of Top 10 Programs you want to coach for and you'll take it every time.
Rick Barnes didn't want the job for $5 million.
I never understand what Rick Barnes is doing. Even in crunch time.
He's using Kevin Durant as a decoy.

Fortunately, at this point, it's false. Mike Bohn would need Presidential body guards to move around Cincinnati if he did that.

He really wanted Nick Van Exel. Went as far as saying his kid would commit to UC if so.

I get a kick out of all the former players who think that one of their own fellow former players was the best choice for the job - when he has no college experience, and no recruiting experience. That said, Brannen and Bohn would be wise to extend olive branches to these guys - much in the same way that Schaus and Boals would be wise to do it here. Having former greats around the program is often a good thing. At UC, it's been seemingly automatic for years because former Huggs players hung around Cronin's teams.

At Ohio, I don't feel like we've had some of the former good players around quite enough in recent years.

My impression was that Saul was particularly good at networking with former players. I know one former player who I talked with (a star not a bench warmer) was really impressed with Saul.

I'll admit I don't have knowledge of it one way or another. It just didn't seem like lots of alumni players were around much to me. Maybe I'm incorrect, and maybe more on court success will help that as well.

I'm not saying that Jeff won't do better than Saul in this regard, especially since he played here and knows a lot of ex-players personally, and those he doesn't yet know will probably bond with him as fellow alumni. All I was saying is that I don't think that this was a weak area for Saul. His main weak area, according to the BA brain trust, was recruiting, and I will say Jeff has been impressive on that front so far!

And people thought we had no chance getting Pat Kelsey because we were "out of his price range."

I think this tells you what you need to know about Kelsey. He's happy at a smaller program. Good luck to him though, that would be a great fit and close to home for him.
