So, for those wanting to retain Saul, does tonight's result change anything in your mind?

I just don't see any way of justifying an extension...short of dire financials in which we cannot get anyone better (which could be possible).

The program is stale and a change is needed. If he is retained the program will be set back for years. I’m sure he’s a great guy but it’s just not working and I don’t see it getting better. Rip the bandage off and let’s get this rebuild started and hope we can retain a few of our key players.

The title of this thread is just shocking.

Completely based on a loss to Buffalo and a comeback win at home...on Senior Day....to an awful Miami team.

Look at the entire body of work. This thing is a grease fire.

Has anyone looked at Geno's Coaching body of work?? It's not impressive. Bradley is significantly better POST Geno than they were WITH Geno. Pass.

I think the idea is that things at OHIO would be like Stoney Brook, with Boals as head coach and Ford as his assistant.

I usually just read and seldom comment, but regarding talent, who among our returning players ( other than Dartis and Carter) would even see playing time on the team that had Walter Offutt, DJ Cooper, Nick Kellogg, Ivo Baltic, Reggie Keely, Tj Hall, Ricardo Johnson and Jon Smith?

This game was emblematic of the entire season; decent stretches, awful stretches. If some of the players truly wanted Coach Phillips back they sure didn't play like it. They made Northern look like Buffalo.

Russ and Rob were pretty blunt in their assessment of what will probably happen tomorrow. They said it was above their pay grade.

I am not one to rant and rave about things, but I am still at a loss as to how some people whom I respect and are long time posters on here think we deserve this. The nuns taught me to offer up sufferings for the poor souls in purgatory and I do, buy they also taught me masochism is a sin too. The idea that we should put up with this for another season is truly sinful.

Since those who defend what we have seen this year haven't answered my repeated questions as to why we deserve this let me ask one more time. Do you really think we can't find anyone to do a better job? Did you want to see Coach Hahn retained? Was I just imaging that Coach Nee had us turned around in his third season? Was I just imagining that the late Coach Majerus took a hapless Ball State team and had them 29-3 in his second year? Finally, the late Charlie Coles, playing in the horrid East German like structure they call Millett Hall, and playing second fiddle to the hockey team, probably wished he had the kind of talent we had this season, yet he rarely had a team play this uninspired. I just don't understand why anyone believes we deserve this.

I hope Coach Phillips has enough financial resources to take a year off and study the game as did Coach Solich did the year before he came our way. Coach Solich said it helped him immeasurably. I hope the perspective gained from a year off would make a good man like Coach Phillips an even better coach.

If Saul is retained, the anger on this board is going to turn into apathy. How excited would you be to renew your season tickets if it's announced that he's coming back? How difficult would it be to generate any excitement for what's left of a student body that regularly attends games?

Not to rehash the "solich hasn't won a MAC" argument, but you can't argue that his success has at least brought hope every year and some sense of optimism before each season.

That's not the case right now with the basketball team. I never like to see a coach leave but it's time to turn the page.

Bingo! A 1/3-of-the-way-filled Convo Friday night against Miami was horrible to see. I felt compelled to tell the guests I brought with me "You should have seen this place for a Miami game years ago".

I agree with this. If you want an example of what things look like when you retain an unsuccessful coach, look to the Bengals after they unwisely chose for one more go around with Marvin. You can't see that to ticket buying fans and alumni.

Also, I know someone will probably throw rocks at me for this, but do other, non-Saul factors play into renewing season tickets, or how much you choose to spend, for anyone else? I can't be the only one who isn't enthused about other factors and the way things get done around The Convo.

Win and I'll be there.
Put a good product on the floor, and I'll do my best to come & support.
Struggle and have a great atmosphere, and I'll figure out ways to make it worth it.

Embrace the downhill slide to mediocrity and struggle to provide any entertainment, experience, or value outside of the sad product on the court... and I'll make only 2 games when I've previously averaged 15.

The other factors are KEY when the product on the floor struggles. Maybe it's time for a new obsession for me. 17 years and literally half my life, and there's not much that excites me about Ohio Basketball right now.

For a first D1 head coaching gig, I would think we pay handsomely, so any P5 assistant looking to make a name for himself should take a call from us seriously. Luke Yaklich and Saddi Washington at Michigan have been mentioned. Ryan Pedon at Ohio State. Luke Murray at Louisville looks like he would be a good get. Plus you'd get the added bonus of Bill Murray sightings in the Convo.

My nephew is a sophomore at Ohio and he's attended one men's basketball game in his first two years. I never missed one home game in my four years at Ohio when school was in session. I also went to countless road games. I asked him why are you and your friends not going to basketball games? His response..."Because we aren't any good." Have to produce a better product on the court to get the fanbase interested....especially students.

Maaaannnn buddy, you're hitting the nail on the head for me. Nail. On. The. Head.

Combine what you said, with the reality that I can spend time with my family if I choose to go to other college basketball venues more frequently by going to The Convo less, and I'm in agreement. I'll never choose to not buy Ohio Basketball season tickets, but I may reduce what I spend to spend more elsewhere with family. And it's pretty hard to sell people on coming across the state to go to The Convo for a so-so gameday experience and bad basketball instead of going to a game at UD, OSU, or UC. Seven to ten years ago, it didn't feel this way. Schaus and Co. have a lot of work to do to reverse the trend.

In the past, good basketball covered for the fact that pretty much every other aspect of a Convo gameday kind of sucks (uninviting entrance that looks and is patrolled like it’s Baghdad, sub-high school concessions, and so-so in-game/timeout entertainment. New scoreboard definitely is nice though). When everything sucks, it becomes a tough sell fast

You make a good point here. And regarding the "patrolled like it's Baghdad" comment, let me just say, I had the chance to visit Fifth Third Arena for the Memphis game, and in no way did I feel like I was surrounded in all directions by security. Also there weren't barricades to keep people from accessing the walkways into the arena - IN CLIFTON. And we all know how Clifton is compared to Athens. This is something that Jimbo and OUPD desperately need to fix.

As an aside, I'd highly recommend checking out the new arena. They did phenomenal work with the rebuild there.

1000% correct. I have said this before. Drive down Richland Ave. on game night , what game? Convo is dark. Why do we not have LED's lighting up the concrete columns to brighten up game night? Parking lot lights are 20+ year old tech. need LED upgrades. Every Athens County HS game has 4 X as good concessions. ( Maybe OU could get them in to serve as a fundraiser for their HS ? ) Parking - donor lots are full before you get there. Why - OUPD requires those that park under the Convo to move out due to bomb threats. They go park in the donor lot behind the Convo. OU parking will not require these donor lots to be cleared for the games, so DONORS hunt for parking. IF you find a spot then you need to walk around the Convo via parking lots to the front ramp. As security, yellow vests, gates will not let you walk up a back ramp to the covered outside concourse level to walk around to the front door. Then you are searched by Yellow jackets and looked at by OUPD and the 2 bomb dogs.

I worked the ground side on aviation for 20+ years before I retired. NOT in security. Many schools, seminars, on-line classes and such. All had a security components after 911. The biggest thing I leaned from them was " You SIZE your response to your perceived threat". Looking at the things OUPD and Yellow jackets do at the Convo and Peden I wonder how many bomb threats a day OU gets???

Bottom line the AD needs to get a backbone. Tell Chief Fife of OUPD to make it less "in you face". Tell parking services these lots belong to us on game day, empty them. And facilities to upgrade the lights.

How does he get this backbone ???? Go to DR. Nellis, explain the issues and needs, and ask for the backing to DEMAND OUPD, parking and facilities come up with a plan to help.

The most important thing to look at, IMO, is the assistant's recruiting track record. Groce was a grand slam hire because he was one of the nation's top recruiters, period. If you go back and look at the number of 5 Stars he was pulling in at OSU, it was remarkable.

Pedon may be a fine coach, but he is no where near the level that Groce was. That's why I'm saying Tom Ostrom's the guy. He's already landed two 5 Stars in Langford and Jackson-Davis, plus an elite 4 star out of Columbus in Jerome Hunter. He knows how to recruit at the highest level, and knows how to recruit Ohio. Plus he has worked under a pack-line defensive guy in Archie, who just so happens to come from the same coaching tree as Groce.

I'll say it again, Ostrom is the guy.

Also, for all of those who doubt whether we'll be able to attract quality candidates, this is still the best job in the conference. It's not just me saying that, but the MAC's own coaches:
