3. Simon Cowell on the first year of American Idol was pretty ruthless with contestants with little talent. I later read that he wasn't ridiculing them to be a jerk and pick on the weak. Actually, it was quite the opposite. He said there were far too many people in life--especially show business who spent way too much of their own time and money on something that would never work out for them. Sometimes contestants would yell back at him saying--my mom thinks I sing great and Uncle Vic said the same and he's the Hungry Heifer Karaoke champ three years running. Besides that sweet cousin Meldehide--my high school drama teacher thinks I am great too. Cowell would retort, your mother, Uncle Vic and Sweet Cousin Meldehide have been lying to you and I am the only one who will tell you truth. This just isn't for you. There are plenty of other areas in life in which you will succeed--this just isn't one of them.
Coach Phillips may one day succeed after becoming an assistant or taking a year off as did Coach Solich to see what went wrong. Sadly, this isn't working and no matter how many nice talks you have heard and motivating practices you have witnessed--it isn't working. Left Lane Hammer Down, I can't tell you how many high school coaching clinics I went to when I was coaching where the supposed hot shot coach with some new offense or gadget defense was out of coaching a few years later after wooing far too many coaches into believing he was the next big thing. Coach Phillips is a good man whom I hope succeeds in his next stop. This stop just didn't work.
Comparing Saul to a failed American Idol contestant is unfair don't you think? Without question he's an excellent basketball coach otherwise he wouldn't have made it this far in his career. This is however Division 1 basketball in a Top 10 conference where you don't get a free pass from results on the court. When Schaus hired Saul they both mutually said they believed it was the top job in the MAC. It hasn't been Ohio over the last 5 years its been Buffalo.

I support giving Coach Coach Phillips a new contract. There are probably over a dozen different criteria for evaluating coaches. I think Coach has performed well in many of those criteria and in building a solid program culture. I want to win as much as anybody on this board. I predict if Ohio retains him that the losing is going to stop and that we will soon be moving back into the upper echelon of this league. I think the recruiting is upticking and that part of the program will get more productive. For those of you who think he can't identify talent, look at Jay Preston.
Re-hiring Coach Phillips will keep stability in the program.
Earlier today I received an e-mail from a guy with whom I would on occasion go to Ohio Bobcat games. He went on a tirade about Jeff not caring about what he was suppose to uphold. I will spare you the colorful language, but to say he was mad was putting it mildly.
If this guy was so mad at me, I wonder why he didn't have the balls to contact me directly?
I knew what I posted would be unpopular. I've been reading the message board closely all season and I anticipated what the responses would be.
Check my original post and you'll see that I didn't say Coach Coach Phillips should be rehired because "he's a nice guy."
Uncle Wes and Jeff. First off Uncle Wes, I think you may be missing the point about what I said in regard to the American Idol Analogy. It wasn't meant to be derogatory, just stating an obvious fact. Being a great Singer, Coach, CEO etc is a very unique skill set. Talk about the 1%, more like the one tenth of 1%. I just haven't seen Coach Phillips have the requisite skill set to be in that rarefied air of successful Division I coaches.
Jeff, I have no idea why he didn't contact you. I don't know him that well and I don't even know if he posts here or not. He went on to say that there have been meetings or overtures through third parties with Mr. Schaus about the current state of the program. I have no reason to believe he would be lying, but I am only in Athens for games and really don't have any inside info in what is going on with boosters and any influence they may or may not have with the university's administration.
Honestly, Jeff I just have to ask you about this. I could be wrong but didn't you mention in some post sometime ago on the football side of the board that you would be in favor of leaving Division I? What I am getting at here is do you still have the fire to see us compete at a high end in Division I football and basketball or is it in your mind a bridge too far? I once was a very fanatical baseball fan in my youth, but while I follow it I am not really to concerned about front office decisions that the Ohio teams make like I was in the past. Maybe that will happen again, but maybe the thrill of the chase for baseball has left me. Do you feel as excited about Bobcat hoops as you once did, say in the Danny Nee era? I am just trying to understand why you are anyone else would think Coach Phillips deserves an extension, which is why I asked did you think Coach Hahn needed to be given more time? I am just trying to understand where you and a few others are coming from because I am at a complete loss. As I have said ad nauseum, Coach Phillips is a good man and probably a good coach. However, he is not a great coach and that is a prerequisite trait needed to be a successful Division I coach. Thank you for all you do in moderating this board!
