Stunter-another news flash/question...in comparison what were the wins for JG?  I think he was a Sweet Sixteen Coach.  Dag, I guess JC is much more qualified than JG!

You just can't logically compare the two situations in any way.  Groce was offered a head coaching job at a place where basketball is king, that has the potential to be a national power, is in what was the top conference in college basketball this year, that's about to spend well over $100 mill renovating Alumni Hall over the next few years, and of course, offered him $1.4 mill a year.

I think you're responding upon reading only half the conversation but it's got me confused too.  OhioStunter did some comparison of number of wins that Sweet Sixteen Coaches had and their tenure.  I didn't quite understand it either...I think his point was that JC's winning percentage was low versus the average Sweet Sixteen team that included names like Calipari, Matta, Williams, Self, etc.  Of course, JC took over a TCU club that had nothing and receives nothing in support, which has really killed JC's win percentage.  Casper responded suggesting a head-to-head comparison of JC/JG winning percentages.  Then Ohio Stunter said JG was 15th best coach in the Sweet Sixteen (I think based on wins/not winning percentage).   We could do a salary comparison of Sweet Sixteen coaches...We paid Groce about $350,000 base salary...so that's $175,000 per win...Izzo makes $3.6 Million..so they paid $1.8 M per win..not sure what it means to this thread though.
======================================================

My thoughts on the JUCO issue: When you don't have a program that can draw recruits (TCU), then you do what you can to bring talent in other means.  I think it's the only way he could jump start that program.  JC should be able to do better drawing recruits to Ohio...they've had strong recent success and good facilities.  3/4ths the battle is getting the recruit on campus.  Any recruit in the area not going to a BCS school should be at least willing to visit Ohio and let the program/facilities sell themselves.

Yeah...I think I misread what he was saying (or trying to say).  For some reason I read it as him saying we offered Christian more money than JG, but I was just pointing out that the opportunity was too much to pass up.

Sorry if I wasn't clear on this. These threads, these threads!

My original point was that head coaches in the Sweet 16 have a lot of head coaching experience (thus the breakout). And if we expect to get back to the Sweet 16, I'd feel better about considering a head coach that has that experience (and wins) vs. a hiring someone with no previous head coaching experience. A rookie head coach might be a great fit for a rebuilding program, but that's not what we are.

I see no problem with a few junior college transfers.  We have had several teams that were just one Ed Sears away from being VERY good.  One could say the same of our recent Big Ten transfers in Sanderson, Bassett and Offut.  All three were huge in the teams success.

I'm not trying to make the point that all JUCOs are bad. My point is just that you're more likely to build long-term success by creating a roster that's primarily made-up of 4-year players rather than 2-year ones (especially of the JUCO variety).

JC bucked that trend in Kent and it worked out for him. It's one of my key questions about philosophy though as he takes over the reigns.

This may be my favorite.

Didn't you know guys? Ohio backed its way into the Sweet 16. And then almost backed its way into the Elite Eight. I say we say it never happened. It was a shameful Sweet 16 run.
I just read it too. Some of it is quite humorous, though. They were an inch from being taken into OT in the semis by Buffalo, beat Akron by one in the final, beat an average UM team in the NCAA tournament, then a USF team who many felt shouldn't even have been in the field and then lost to a UNC team missing its best player and the fans think if JC doesn't get them to the Elite Eight or Final Four he's a disgrace.

I'm sure he meant "Average Big Ten Co-Champion Michigan" team?  And a UNC team that had 3 NBA likely First Round picks on the court (Zeller, Barnes, Henson)?

And McAdoo (although he hasn't declared yet), so four, and all four of them possibly lottery picks.

one could argue that JUCOs took us on their backs on our last 2 NCAA Tournament runs in Bassett and Offutt.

Remind me what Junior Colleges Bassett and Offutt attended...

Offutt went to Wright State....badabing.

EDIT: Don't know how that got posted on Hehate's post. Must be too hasty today.

I was trying to make a sly point that both of them were transfers, not JUCOs.

I was trying to make a sly point that Wright State isn't much more than a JUCO
You guys are right-my bad on that one!! I meant well.....

But my point still stands, a transfer in and of itself isn't a bad thing and is an option Groce himself used well.

I thought this was a very salient point. It seems a lot of us (me included) entered this coach hiring period thinking "let's find the next John Groce." Truth is, Groce helped elevate this program over the past 4 years to a level where we should be hiring someone better than the rookie-no-coaching-experience version of Groce.

What looked like a very risky hire to me last night is starting to seem markedly less risky than hiring a rookie head coach, whether that would be Boals or Ford.

Just something to chew on.

My money is on McAdoo eventually being the best of that bunch.

Here is a question to ask yourself. Christian just interviewed at Rhode Island where he played. Why wasn't he hired by the Rams ?
Here is another question to ponder. Ohio has not had a great track record with hiring East Coast coaches. When living in Athens they seem to struggle with our culture. Why is Christian going to be different? He is a New York native.

Another question. Where was DJ this morning during the team meeting to announce the new coach ? Hint: He wasn't at the meeting and he wasn't in class.

Danny Nee was a New York native. As I recall, he played at Power Memorial with Lew Alcindor. Plus, Christian has spent a large part of his coaching career in the midwest.

As for the Rhode Island job, they got Dan Hurley from Wagner. He seemed to be a slam dunk candidate for them. Turned Wagner around. Bobby is on his staff. Dad gives them great East Coast presence. I think it just had more to do how good a candidate Hurley was as opposed to what Jim Christian did/didn't have.

DJ wasn't in town, and that was known. He is traveling back to Athens now, and I'm guessing a certain coach will be anxious to meet him.

Can we avoid getting this crap storm stirred up? Coop will be back in Athens later today.

Chalk it up as him being on vacation at the wrong time. By "wrong" I mean bad timing. If Ohio weren't hiring a coach right now, it wouldn't matter that DJ was gone for a few days.

Wow, dude, you are really reaching. Christian lived in Ohio for much of his head coaching career, has been to Athens frequently to play Ohio, and his wife is an OU alum. I am sure he has no idea of what he's getting into or how he'll like Athens.

According to DJ's Twitter he is heading to Houston today. Isn't that where Jarrod Jones is training for the NBA draft? Coincidence? Here's the story about Jones... http://www.thestarpress.com/article/20120401/SPORTS2002/204010354

In the past 30 years, Ohio has been to the NCAA tourney six times. Half were with east coast coaches. The other two's wives apparently didn't care for Athens. I think it's safe to say Christian's wife won't feel the same. She is one of us.

Doesn't he have any Monday classes?  Timing seems strange to me.  Hope it's no big deal.

Perhaps he didn't schedule classes on Mondays this quarter, or has class in the evenings on Monday, or knew ahead of time that he was going to be out of town and emailed his professors asking if he could pick up a syllabus during office hours.

That said, I'm sure we're 20 minutes away from someone on this board posting his full class schedule and last quarter's grades, so just wait for it.

I think the human race has reached its pinnacle: following 21-year olds basketball players' movements around the country in instant-time and wondering if they've done their homework.

We've arrived,folks.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but a "full schedule" for one of our athletes is 12+ hoursrs. Between that and priorty scheduling it wouldnt be that hard to not have monday classes,. Heck, i had several friends taking 16+ hours and managing to only have classes scheduled 2 days a week
