Hi everyone, with hoops season just around the corner, Coach Boals was nice enough to join me for a podcast this week. We didn't get too much into this year's roster, but we did cover his return to Athens, the change in athletic directors right after he was hired, the things he's doing on campus and social media to get students and fans excited about Ohio basketball, working with Thad Matta, and what Cavs fans should expect from John Beilein.

It's a quick episode, but I think we covered a lot. Hope you enjoy.

Thanks for sharing this Tom. I haven't had a chance to listen yet, but I have an observation from my perspective: Boals is seemingly restoring some of the excitement of fans, students, staff, alumni much more so than the prior two staffs. Obviously on court success will be needed to sustain that. He's very engaged and sincerely very excited to be back in Athens, and I think that with some winning, that excitement will snowball into some fun times watching Ohio Basketball.

Yeah, that has been one of the most interesting things to me so far, so I wanted to make sure we covered it early in the episode. He definitely seems to get it as far as being a university ambassador goes. (And it probably has something to do with him agreeing to be a guest on an alum’s podcast, so huzzah)

Having just finished up listening about an hour ago, I chuckled that it was one of your big topics. I'm glad to see it. I just hope a fair amount of winning follows in the next couple years to accompany it to make the hoops atmosphere in The Roundhouse exciting again.

I am not sure how much winning we'll see in year one. Honestly, if it's .500 this season..I think people will be doing a little dance. So many new faces....so many freshmen. However, I think what we wall want to see is potential and hope moving forward. I'm convinced we'll see that. While I'm looking forward to year one of the Boals era, I'm more excited about year two and three.

Great job on the podcast Tom. The story of throwing out the first pitch at Indians game was hilarious. Also glad to hear you bring up everything Boals is doing on social media and in the community with students/fans. His engagement with Bobcat nation is not going unnoticed.

Coach Boals even mentioned the winning aspect in the podcast, which I thought was interesting. He said something like "worry about winning later" and right now is just about getting better and on the same page.

Which to me is the right approach to take in year one.

FearLeon, I'm with you -- I'm not expecting miraculous turnarounds in year one. I'm just saying he's gaining all kinds of equity on campus right now as Tom discussed with him, and that winning will really build on that.

Yup...end of day...winning ultimately puts butts in seats. I really think this thing takes off in year two, but still hopeful there are a few wins we didn't expect in year one.
