Wonder what kind of wave this will send thru the coaching ranks.....gotta assume 3 more changes are going to occur.....

Looks like Michigan is going with Jawan Howard so it shouldn't have too much of a ripple effect. Another program hiring a famous alum with no college experience (not even that much pro experience).

So a bunch of fat, middle-aged white dudes disapprove? While I can't say I disagree (I fit in the aforementioned demographic), what we think doesn't really matter if Howard can recruit anywhere close to Penny Hardaway. If it excites top-level recruits, then it starts to look like a savvy hire.

The track record of former stars coaching at their alma maters is pretty bad, but if Howard can bring in great players, he's very likely to have success.

This was my first reaction to the news. If it goes as well early on as it seems to be going at Memphis with Penny, I'd have to think this is a really good hire. As usual, time (and results) will tell.

I'm actually more optimistic Howard will do well at Michigan than I am about Beilein in Cleveland.

Michigan will lock down Detroit, Flint, etc. with this hire. And you can be sure that Webber and Rose will be active in the recruiting process - as able and legal.

I'm sorry but this is absolute horsesh*t. I'll give Penny Hardaway credit because he started his coaching career in junior high, high school and AAU. He probably understands the recruiting process a little bit and knew exactly how to recruit to Memphis.

But what has Howard, Rose or Webber done to make you think they'll "clean up?" Howard has benefited from being connected to the NBA for 20+ years, but how does that translate to college? Rose and Webber have been NBA analysts, but how does that translate to college? If a recruit simply signs with Michigan because those three have played in the NBA and not their actual coaching acumen, those kids will be in for a world of disappointment.

And for all intents and purposes, Webber hated/hates what the NCAA stood for. He won't help Michigan make more money when he still hasn't came out and publicly apologized for infractions that happened while he was in school.

"The one thing that we both know is his success turning around the University of Michigan is first and foremost about him and about the players that he’s going to influence."

Umm what? Turning around? John Beilein turned Michigan around. There is nothing to turn around. Michigan hasn't been at this high of a level since you left school.

Who knows, maybe Howard will end up being good. But to say this is such a great hire for Michigan just because his name is Juwan Howard is silly.

I think the big thing for Juwan Howard the first couple years will be retaining key Michigan personnel. As he has shown so far, he's looking to keep some guys around. The next recommendation is get someone with deep bench experience at the college level until he gets his feet wet with the NCAA rulebook and has an understanding of it.

Idk why Jalen Rose has been bashing Michigan and acting like Juwan will bring peace to Michigan, but Beilein has been the best thing to happen to Michigan basketball in a long while (bonus points that it was done clean and without Ed Martin). Hopefully Howard realizes that and keeps a critical core of Beilein's staff. I will laugh hard if he puts Michigan on probation one day because it would almost be poetic, but am intrigued by the hire nonetheless.

As to locking down the big cities in Michigan, if he can go toe-to-toe like Beilein was doing down the stretch with Izzo and go into Ohio like Beilein did, then Michigan will be fine. Watching Michigan and MSU go into the midwest and build a team has been impressive the last few years.

I guess I'm just desperately hoping that actually learning under Eric Spoelstra and Pat Riley means more than just being able to smooth talk and arrange one year, zero percent, feel-free-to-never-pay-us-back financing all laundered through a shoe company for 18-year-olds, their handlers and their agents who TOTALLY aren't their agents yet.

Hoiberg is weird. You would've never guessed he came from the NBA. He so naturally fit into the college game. Ames loved him in a way that you usually only see for the absolute legends of the game.

But I thought Brad Stevens would be a college lifer, too, and he's done splendidly in the NBA, outside of Kyrie Irving grabbing the wheel and careening the bus into the side of the mountain for one season.

Completely unrelated but the menton of all the fab 5 guys got me thinking how close we will get to having a fab 5 of our own and strting 5 freshmen this coming season? It would likely mean Dartis injured, and I have to assume Preston will have a spot but if things break a certain way maybe we will see it for a game or 2.
