I was also hoping for Jeff Boals or Dustin Ford and was frozen in place when I heard this Jim Christian news. However, we get a coach who has won near 200 games and has six 20 win seasons under his belt. He never finished worse then 2nd in the MAC East and knows the midwest with experience at Muck Fiami, Western Kentucky, Pitt, and Kent. I am intersted to see the money he is getting paid, but having an experienced coach going forward with this crew coming back next year (we hope) and moving forward isn't the worst thing. Would I have prefered other options, yes, but he has many positives on his resume. His time at TCU isn't a total negative to me.

Agree... we have a guy that was a moving into the Big 12 had he stayed - so he has competed with the best. Experience means a lot. Not all negative here. I like the hire.

I'll take Groce's mediocre regular seasons and tournament wins over lots of regular season wins and no tournament. Hope Christian figures out how to win in March.

The $600,000 salary is what shocks me most...more than we reportedly offered Groce to stay...

Is that OHIO money or just his TCU salary. I will be amazed if we are paying him that.

CBS story says he made $600,000 at TCU and will make comparable money at OHIO. I'm hoping that was a misquote and that what was meant is that he will make a salary comparable to Groce's.

Likes: Coaching ability, proven winner, knows the conference, doesn't really have to implement a system he can just let the guys play.

Dislikes: Money, possible issues academically and off the court (based off past at Kent), recruits a lot of JUCOs doesn't he?

According to the Article.

[QUOTE=Jeff Goodman] This was the right move for Christian -- as TCU will go into the Big 12 next season. Christian, per a sources, will also make comparable money. He was making about $600,000 per season at TCU. Christian's wife also went to Ohio U.

A bit unexpected but if it's true I plan on being fully supportive. Maybe I am wrong but I also have a lot of confidence in Ohio AD Schaus and McDavis.

All I have to say is if this is true.  Why Not.  He did well at KSU.  6 Solid Seasons.  Give me a 6 year span in Ohio Basketball that was as good as JIm's at KSU.  His record at KSU is better than JG's in the MAC.  This is his 6 seasons at KSU: (138-59) Not Bad at All!

2002–03 22–9 (12–6) 2–1; Lost in final 0–1 in NIT Jim Christian
2003–04 22–8 (13–5) 2–1; Lost in final 0–1 in NIT Jim Christian
2004-05 20–13 (11–7) 1–1; Lost in quarterfinal 0–1 in NIT Jim Christian
2005–06 25–9 (15–3) 3–0; Won tournament 0–1 in NCAA Tournament Jim Christian
2006–07 21–11 (12–4) 1–1; Lost in semifinal -- Jim Christian
2007–08 28–7 (13–3) 3–0; Won tournament 0–1 in NCAA Tournament Jim Christian

He averaged 23 wins a year a Kent, and never won fewer than 11 conference games. Hard to dislike that.

I never liked his reliance on juco's and players with shady backgrounds, but hopefully he'll be able to recruit differently to Athens.

just from reading a few comments on the TCU board it looks like there's alot of frustration with the school's lack of commitment to the bball program, several are saying going to Ohio is an upgrade. That sounds weird doesn't it?

in Schaus we trust.

The only thing that will pee me off about this (if it's true) will be any recruiting loss because of the change.

From the recruiting board we may have lost one already and any defections may cause this program to take a step back.

That was Fort Worth Star-Telegram reporter Stefan Stevenson.

Stevenson, though, said he expects Christian to be at Ohio in another tweet. Christian might be parsing language by saying he hasn't officially been offered the job.

Although Christian says he hasn't been hired, I'm sure announcement is coming tomorrow. CBSSports said it'll be announced Tuesday.

The Situation

I felt numb there for a second, but the initial shock has worn off. I'm excited for the press conference.

Schaus hit big on two men's basketball coaches (Greg Marshall and John Groce). The evidence is there to trust both our AD and Christian. I have no idea what kind of style he plays, but I imagine Schaus believes it is one that gives us a great opportunity to return to the Sweet 16.

If the salary estimate was accurate, as a fan be excited about the financial commitment by the administration. The Gonzagas, Xaviers, and Butlers of the world all had to evolve their budgets at some point.

I'm very pleased to see we're setting the bar in the MAC for coaches salaries.

P.S. I wouldn't mind a one and one with San Diego State or New Mexico (assuming Christian has made those connections during his time in the MWC).

My guess is the AD had to talk to someone  this weekend and based on his MAC past, why not Christian?  I hope once the Buks lost the AD was able to come back to reality and go after the one most of us want.  Having said that, we could do a lot worse.

As I said in another thread, whoever comes in here has to be given some slack.

The fact his wife went to Ohio is very interesting to me. If this hire actually happens, I'll be curious to see how much she gets involved with the school and Athens community as a whole.

Well at least she bleeds green....hopefully Christian will follow the "if mama ain't happy nobody's happy"  philosophy.

And for all we know, Boals might've already told Ohio he wasn't interested. He is in a position where he may believe he can skip the mid-major stepping stone if he stays with Matta long enough. And maybe he doesn't want the pressure of coaching his alma mater. Boals leaving Ohio after four seasons would be more painful than Groce leaving. He's one of our own and he'd have to go through what Groce did with a lot of pressure on him to stay.

We have fans who are telling Groce to not let the door hit him on the way out. Imagine if Boals left....
