Just saw Athlon and Lindy's hoop mags today. They both picked us sixth in the MAC East, dead last in the division, probably because there are only six teams in competition. Now I don't bet. But I'm very confident we won't come anywhere near finishing at the bottom of the division.

I hope not but this is the biggest reconstruction of a program we've had since Danny Nee took over back in the early 80s.

I know what you mean, Alan. Danny had to pretty much start from scratch. So did Larry Hunter. There are two major differences to me in this situation, though.

First, Jeff Boals fortunately doesn't have to start out with a barren cupboard. Ben Vander Plas and Jason Preston can play. Don't know if Jordan Dartis will be able to last physically, but if he can, we know he's an all-MAC talent. I had several conversations with former coach Saul Phillips pertaining to Nate Springs. Saul was well aware that Nate would need some time to get stronger and hone his skills when he recruited him. But he was really high on Nate's upside and really believed he could become an impact player down the line. I always agreed with that assessment.

Secondly, it took Nee and Hunter a few recruiting classes to get MAC-level players on the roster. Coach Boals hit the ground running in this regard. It's the factor I'm counting on that could make us competitive in the conference in a shorter than expected period of time.

Flash Gary thanks for letting us know. I hadn't yet stopped by the newsstand to see the predictions for 2019-20.

Alan, you're right it is going to be hard to top Coach Nee's first two recruiting classes.

However if I am Coach Boals, I got to be licking my chops thinking if this is how the rest of the MAC thinks, I got them right where I want them. There will be a lot of ups and downs, but I can't see us finishing in the basement.

Coming off a losing record, losing our two best players to transfer and a whole new coaching staff. Seems like common sense. Does anyone have a good reason we should be picked higher? Not saying we can't finish higher, but why on earth would be be picked higher?

Those predictions are probably not far off considering the rebuild being undertaken by Boals. Need big years from the incoming newcomers.

Remember also that Murrell played meaningful minutes last year and Ogbanda has ACC experience (although limited). If two of these freshmen guards come to play right away (and who says all 4 won't) then we will certainly be better than we have been the past few years. I like the chip on the shoulder team. I don't know if I ever saw OUr guys play with a chip on their shoulder under Saul.

How about the year Big Tone went down, and they still ended up as the two seed in Cleveland? I'd say there was quite a chip throughout February & March that year.

Yeah...Maybe 2 highest scorers...but no, not 2 best players. Definitely best player though. I'll give you that.

Remember that Lindy's and Athlon are the two bottom of the barrel preseason publications, though I wouldn't be surprised to see others pick Ohio 6th as well.

I do believe it took Danny's first class a few seasons to get it going. I recall him saying, in retrospect, he wishes he had redshirted Devereaux his freshman year. I do believe that several of Jeff's recruits are ready to hit the ground running--such as Marvin Price, Lunden McDay and Ben Roderick. They probably will have a greater impact this season than Danny's freshmen class did.

It did take a couple of years. In fact, I think they had a worse record his first year than they did Dale Bandy's last. Then year two Tim Woodson left in December (I think). Year 3 was the big leap forward.

I really have no idea where this team will finish but I'll be watching as often as I can.

I hate to say I won't miss TK skill set but I wish him well. The incoming newbies are intriguing.

My dream is seeing increased athleticism and FT shooting %. Less TO's, bad shots.

We did finish 6th last year and that may have been only because there were only 6 teams. New coach, new players. Not sure where you expected the respect to come from.

While I haven't tried the other publications in years, thanks to folks on here, I've used Blue Ribbon for a few years in a row. A thorough book for college hoops that I think is worth every penny.

Elton is very uneven in his work on the MAC in Street and Smith's. Last year, he was high on VanderPlas as a newcomer and he ended up being freshman of the year. But sometimes he's guilty of gaffes like overlooking the Gatorade Player of the Year.
