I was wondering why it took so long. Former player Mark Kostelac filed suit alleging gross negligence on the part of John Groce after Kostelac was badly beaten by another player right in front of the coaches during a practice session. He suffered multiple facial fractures, several broken teeth and other injuries, yet Groce didn't call medical personnel and let Kostelac drive himself 70 miles to his home. Practice continued. The attacking player was ultimately expelled from the university, but the suit claims Groce and staff fostered racial division among team members.

Kostelac drove his self to the hospital with a concussion. Also Groce is fostering racial division, he is white and Kostrlac is white, he will get a settlement but he is lying.

allen, I've missed this sort of thing -- how do you know for certain "he is lying"?

Just because both Groce and Kostelac are white doesn't mean Groce couldn't foster racial division. Kostelac could be the victim (not the target) of the racial division. The racial tension on the team (if it's there) could have led to the attack against him.

That's a very good point. Unless one has inside information, any statement about the dynamics of the situation is pure speculation. That's something we BAers are very good at!

I will say, though, that per my cryptic comment earlier in this thread, I have observed personally what appears to me to be two different John Groces. This may mean nothing more than that he can be a very emotional person, but that his core remains the same. On the other hand, it could indicate a personality disorder. I have no idea which it is, but it is a question that has perplexed me for awhile. I will always be grateful for his time at OHIO and that Sweet 16 run.

Apparently Kostelac claims that he was discriminated against because he's white and Catholic. https://www.cleveland.com/metro/2019/10/ex-university-of-...

The suit has been dismissed against Groce but apparently not the school.

The claims are absolutely ridiculous, he will get a settlement from the university, as he should, Groce and the other coaches that are employed by the university are responsible. They should have broken it up. He and his coaches are not racist and they don’t encouraged racism against their own race or religion. That is both inflammatory and connotative language used to bring extra attention to the situation. It is faux news, I hope the kid gets a nice settlement and applies his catholic faith to be righteous and honest works. The kid that did this to him should be prosecuted and should not be able to play college basketball anywhere.

When it comes to "ridiculous",one thing that jumped out at me from reading the article "Serious dental work which will require treatment for the rest of his life" ?

My brother had six of his front teeth snapped off at the gum line playing baseball.
(He should have ducked when the batter took a wild swing)

Took a couple of years, but they capped the teeth that could be saved.
The others they removed and put in implants.

Been a number of years and the only "treatment" he gets are his semi annual check ups.
