I checked up to see how the Saul Phillips era has started for Northern State. 0-2, with the most recent loss coming to the #9 ranked D2 team in a close game. It looks like Northern State started the year off ranked #15 but will clearly be dropping. Rough start.

For context, how many starters/players returned this year?

He has 9 returning players, the bulk of his offense returned.

Thanks, I assume you meant 9 returning players since it's tough to have nine starters in hoops.

No idea what the other stuff was about.

Northern State has won their last two to even their record. The two losses appear to be pretty good teams. They lost to the first one last year by 12 and the second one is currently ranked #9 (whatever that means).

Sort of off topic, but I noticed JC at BC got stomped by Belmont again, this time on his home floor. I sat through that ESPN Bracket Buster game in Nashville and watched him get totally out coach by Rick Byrd and now he got out coached by Byrd's replacement. A kid who averaged 2ppg last season lit BC up for a shocking 35.

My take on JC is that he's a decent recruiter but a horrible in-game coach. His success in the MAC seems to have been from having better talent who won despite his coaching deficiencies. At least that's my take. Look at his post season record -- in seven of the nine times he's gotten to the post season his teams have been bounced in the first round. The two times he's gone further were in the glorified atmosphere of the CIT and CBI.

My take is he is good at a style of basketball that doesn't work in today's game and he hasn't been able to adjust. You don't produce the success he achieved in this conference purely off recruiting. He was a good coach. He still is, but just not for 2019.

Is that why he's in year 6 at BC?

I still don't get all the hatred for him.

How long did Groce last at Illinois? Oh, 5 years.

It's not hate. It's just an observation. I don't think he's a good coach when it comes to in-game decisions. I think he's a fairly good recruiter, but that he has problems in other areas. We even had a former player tell us something about the rapport, or lack thereof, in his locker room. You may disagree with my assessment of his coaching. That's fine. But, don't classify my evaluation of him as "hate." I have no personal animus toward him.

I wouldn't call it that shocking. The kid is averaging 23 a game this year.

According to Nicole's Twitter/blog post, Northern State won their conference title.

Wish Saul would have and would have had as active a twitter feed as his wife. Dude belongs at Northern State or Eastern Dakota Community College or Idaho Jesuit; somewhere that he can aw shucks everyone and not worry about things like fan involvement, energy or social media. Good on Northern State for winning lately but I still found Saul to be the worst MAC coach of the last 5 years not named Rob Murphy.

Little harsh don't you think? I could care less if he or any coach is on social media. Recruit good kids who can graduate in 4 or 5 years who play hard every night and who can make their families, friends, and their university proud. Oh and win 20 games every year against quality opponents.

Exactly, Alan, this Saul bashing is getting a little out of hand.

We can always rely you to take a "hey, good for him" post and be angry or spiteful about it. Keep being you buddy. You make it easy for the rest of us to look better.

Agree with your assessment of 1998. And besides, NCAA Div II isn't exactly the bush leagues. Northern State actually out draws several MAC teams.

Congratulations, Saul, on a solid achievement in your first season at Northern.

Agree totally. Always liked Saul, and I still think he got a raw deal at OHIO, due to the injury bug. But, I'm very happy with Jeff Boals. So, maybe it's a win-win situation in the long run!

He is where he is supposed to be, they were ranked to start the season and they somewhat underachieved. He saved someone’s life and he can rescue Connor murrell and mason mcmurray. I hope they go deep, he did not get a raw deal here. He had some injuries, but he did not teach our guards anything. He is a players coach and inherited a great squad, he needs to stay where he is.

You suck. Take a long look in the mirror and figure out what made you so bitter and feckless.
