Good effort. Could not get stops when we needed them the last 10 minutes.

Arkley tweeted out stat sheet. Ogbonda +- was way ahead of everyone else
Loving what Ogbonda brings. I will give Boals Granger and White next year. Other 2 schollies have to be for Ogbonda 2.0 plus as well as a 6-6 wing who can slash and hit 3s. I will take a grad transfer or Jeremy Harris Juco. Heck I would take Travis Wilkins!!

We return Preston, BVP, McDay, Roderick, Foster, McMurray, Brown and hoping Murrell with experience. Would welcome 2 instant impacters.

Needed a monster effort and got one today. Everyone made good plays to win, but hard to do that when Jackson goes completely off. Frustrating that a lot of his looks were wide open looks. Cant let that happen with a guy that hot.

I actually thought the front court held up pretty well in the second half. Of course it helped having BVP, but it was their guards that killed us today.

Two things that are frustrating: whomever Jackson was guarding should have immediately went to the block every, single, time. They did it a few times throughout and it created so many options for the offense once the defense sunk in to help the little guy.

And the other is the complete absence of BRod late in the game. Not his fault, but Boals sat him until way too late. We needed his shooting ability to spread the floor when buckets mattered most. Still puzzling to me how gets a good run going and then gets pulled.

At this point, I'm ready for a lineup of Preston, Dartis, McDay, BRod and BVP. Go small and spread the floor.

Couldn't agree more and those sitting around me heard me suggesting this strategy from the beginning.

I just don't think college basketball, unlike the NBA, looks to take advantage of 1-on-1 mismatches. Preston has shown that he has a strong post-up game to begin with. Jackson guarding him is just more reason to set up down low and/or back him down. If nothing else, it's going to make Jackson, who lit us up on the other end of the court, have to expend that much more energy trying to stop him.

In the second half our guys laid it all out. I thought they played very well, but they had dug themselves too much of a hole in the first half to dig their way out of it. I think that the way they played in the second half showed real promise for the future. They are working hard. They are improving. I'm not giving up on this team yet.

Tremendous second half effort, but for the second game in a row, we had no answer for a veteran lead guard. We need one of those and someone who can stop that type. I don't know who on our roster can develop into either. Eugene German will be another tough assignment.

I didn't like the ruling on the late Preston steal. Replay did not show he was out of bounds and you can even argue he was fouled on his three point heave.

Convo sounded more energized than it has in quite some time. There's hope.
Last replay went to the veteran coach. Boals will get that when we start winning.
Your post insinuates that the refs are biased. Sounds like tosu fans after the Clemson game. I don't buy it.

My predictions of paid attendance official figures are usually pretty close. However, I was way off today...I thought the paid attendance figure would be 6250, but the figure is actually a little over 5,000. It seemed to me that there were actually that many butts in seats today, but that if no-shows were counted that should have put the paid figure over 6,200.

Any thoughts on this?

I thought it was the largest attendance this year, at least of the games I've attended, and I've attended all but a few when I was out of state. My estimate was at least 6,000.

What an awesome game. Feel sorry for the lazy students and frontrunners to have to miss it.

I thought the foul call on Ogbonda with 12ish seconds to go was terrible. I didn't see video yet...but from the naked eye I barely saw any contact. Would really have loved to see us at least get a chance at the end.

I really dont think the defense on Jackson was all that bad. Sure a few open looks, but also a few right in our face...and several created by great ball movement and screens. He was unbelievable and very frustrating.

I'd argue that was about as good as Akron has and we almost answered it.

Frustrating? Harney guarding DJ was frustrating.

This is not a joke! How many more would Jackson have scored had Springs been guarding him? I have never seen either so it could be that in one step Jackson would be able to create enough space to knock down jumpers at a faster clip than the 35 yesterday. However, could a giant wingspan with some agility cause a shooter to adjust just enough to bring down the made field goal percentages? It happened in Cleveland once to DJ.

Another thing, this game was actually won by Tyler Cheese going off late in the first half. Play some tough defense on him and keep the half deficit to 10-12 and an exciting game may have been one for the ages.

Are you saying that Akron's win was kind of cheesy?

I made the same comments during the game. IMHO it was our opportunity to make one thing, his size, a liability for them. If he's worried a bit about his defense maybe he's not as "zoned in" offensively. The fact that Preston is a good passer and could dish off when help came seems to make it an even better strategy. Perhaps the more astute basketball minds on here can offer why this would, or would not, be a good strategy?

When they played the replay on the video board it clearly showed a foul. Even those in our section who were howling "no foul" changed their tune.

I thought the opposite. I didn’t see a foul. I was REALLY hoping for one, but I didn’t think there was enough to call one. Plus, I’m not even sure they’re allowed to call an initial foul based on replay. I thought they were just determining how much time was on the clock.

If you looked behind us Jeff, there were and continue to be lots of empty seats. I'm wondering if those season ticket seats are actually sold this year. The same seats seem to be empty game after game after game. If they are no shows, they sure missed a good game yesterday.

Remember that if every single seat below the walkway is full that's only 3k people.

That was a fantastic 2nd half of basketball. Obviously it's more fun when we win, but it's fun to see a high level game with both teams trading big blows. Reese's dunk on McDay in the 1st half was filthy. LCJ was incredible. And through all that Akron threw at us, our guys responded, got off the mat, and nearly stole this one.

Side note: looking at Akron's starting 5, I'd half to believe (barring more transfers) they are going to take a major step back next year losing 4 of their starting 5. This is their year to make a push with this much upperclassmen leadership.

Considering they have the best player I've seen in the MAC back next year and the first three guys off the bench this year are two freshmen and a junior and Groce's history of finding a transfer (Jackson and Walter Offutt come to mind), they may drop off a bit but not a precipitous amount.

You're assuming nobody transfers out...which in this day and age is not likely. We'll see how it plays out. 4 of the starting 5 are gone for sure.

Murrell and McMurray should join Saul next, we should replace them with a 6’7-6’8 guy that move, rebound and has a nice touch and we should add one wing and a pg. in three years Boals can have the same success that Groce is having.
Ahhh, allen is back with standard allen comments showing "expertise" in recruiting and talent evaluation.

That's an angle I hadn't considered. That game definitely showed what Ohio can play like. Also, Jackson probably played the best game of his life. The next time around, he's probably making 3-4 three's instead of 7-8.

This game and the Toledo game confirmed for me that the remaining two scholarships need to be used on transfers of whatever variety. Assuming the goal is to compete at the top 4 of the conference, having two more freshmen next year isn't the route to the top of the conference when the best teams in the MAC, right now, are fielding teams with juniors and seniors physically ready to play. Akron, Toledo, UB, Kent, BG are teams full of "older" players.

Also - GoCats and I were discussing during the game - I think OUr best five is probably Preston, Dartis, BVP, Roderick, McDay. While that creates defensive matchup problems for against bigger players, it also creates mismatches on offensive with the 4 guards.

EDIT: Already posted:

The four smalls lineup might be a bit dangerous considering two of them are shooting less than 36% from the floor and doing that would sit down your leading rebounder. Let's see what the next two games look like before making a drastic lineup change. If Akron doesn't answer ever basket where we drew within 2 on Saturday, this is a totally different conversation.

True statement on the rebounding. No question in my mind that Sylvester is in the best 6 players.
