No other information - other than I originally grew up in a tiny town right outside Norwalk before moving during high school. Been to and played in many a Norwalk Truckers or Bellevue Redmen sporting event.

The NOL has a history of being physical, but that's a bit extreme. Crazy that this made national news.

It's hard to say what happened. Looked like there might've been some jawing before hand. Maybe the girls game is starting to catch up with the boys in some unfortunate respects. A few years ago there was a brawl at a WNBA game.

Speaking of attacks, four NJ high school players have been suspended for attacking their coach after reaching an 0-15 record: https://www.cnn.com/2020/02/09/us/malcolm-x-shabazz-high-...

My dad and I are both officials and while jawing seems to be more prevalent with boys, we both agree the physical chippiness is WAY more prevalent with girls (jersey grabbing, elbows, hard screens, etc.)

What other additional information do you want? Bellevue has said that it has disciplined the student, Norwalk is not happy because Bellevue will not publicly state what the punishment is (due to privacy concerns of a minor). Norwalk would also like the OHSAA to take punitive measures as well, however, that actually falls first on Bellevue as that is a local issue.

And I always knew you were a foxnews supporter Alan ;-)

Be interesting as this picks up steam if the proper phrasing will become "was" a Kent recruit. Clearly this could be grounds to pull a LOI

Would be interested in what precipitated the event. I check all sides of the news everyday much to my republican friends' surprise. :)

I have actually seen the film of the game, it's really a mundane game with a kid doing something malicious and uncalled for out of the blue.

Bellevue was 20-0 until last night. They lost with Santoro suspended. Apparently, her dad is the head coach.

Upper Sandusky played Bellevue earlier this year. Upper is way down this year, and Bellevue won easily. Still I've heard accusations of Bellevue, and this player especially, being overly physical (scratching, pinching, in addition to pushing and that kind of thing).

This particular incident happened in the third minute of the game, so there couldn't have been anything ongoing to have provoked it. Everyone around here is saying that it is a one-game suspension, though as noted, the school has not said so. Had she been caught during the game, I would have hoped she would have been ejected. An ejection is an automatic two-game suspension, and her action was far worse than things I've seen players ejected for.

The victim has a concussion and probably will miss at least a few games. Bellevue did lose a non-league game against a one-loss opponent (Mike Johnson's alma mater Shelby) without her. It has one more regular season game against an opponent it will overwhelm, with or without her, and it won't have any problem winning without her in the first tournament game or two, so they easily could extend the punishment without it hurting the team.

It wouldn't really mean anything anyway. Bellevue in no way that I've seen has expressed any regret or remorse for the incident and I've actually seen tweets mocking Norwalk for tattling. It's not painting a good picture at all.

If the school only doles out a 1 game suspension, look for the OHSAA to step in and bring the same punishment that an ejection would have carried.

I feel like this entire thread is full of overreactions. Its not like she beat the other girl with a football helmet. Having once in-game incident like this is not grounds for pulling an entire scholarship.

My view from the seats for women's games here, I'd agree with you 100%. The ladies can be really, really rough.

I didn't realize the OHSAA could get out a video that quickly to all of it's district board members. They've come a long way since the days of paper ballots down here in the SE District. :)

Has nothing to do with District Boards, it would be awesome if you always knew what you thought you knew.

Santoro has issued an apology and she and her family will meet with the victim and her family to apologize face to face.

I do feel like a one-game suspension is way too short, but I also feel like having her scholarship pulled would be way too big a punishment.

One game is way to short. Interestng fact is that Bellevue won the game by 41. Such a bizarre act leads one to question the character of the perp. I'd sure want to have a serious sit down with the kid before following through on the scholarship. Actions often speak louder than words.

For me it comes down to patterns of behavior. If she has done this or things similar before, it doesn't look good. If not...she made a bad split second decision. You could also easily argue she did not intend to bring the girl to the ground...as others have said, veiled pinches and jabs are not uncommon and her intent may have been much less violent than that looked.

I'm from outside of Norwalk as well and schools within the NOL/SBC/Firelands conferences are very close in proximity and often times, students are acquaintances outside of school/sports. This reaction could have stemmed from an incident outside of school that got carried into the game. I'm just speculating but Bellevue and Norwalk are pretty big rivals and it wouldn't surprise me if those girls had beef outside of basketball.

If the act was seen by the referee the suspension would be 2 games for the ejection. Just because the student was not caught does not lessen the act that was committed.

SE Ohio had a kid throw a punch last year that was not caught. School was called out for it, and the kid who threw the punch was benched for a half a game. The public shaming that went on was significant.

As for the scholarship, that is totally up to the offering school, however such acts, especially if LE would have gotten involved would be grounds for cancelling, that is between the family and that school. The fact that the act would be grounds for, is all I was getting at.
