I really don't understand all the panic. Unless you send people home and basically have everyone quarantine themselves for a month. What are you really accomplishing? Unless you believe this is going to be like the flu and disappear or get cut way back when the weather turns warm i think you are just delaying this.

To me you would be better off waiting and doing this when you had this in your area and then shut down an entire area for like 21 days.


Yes we have people who have certain conditions that we need to take special precautions with now but otherwise i think we have the tail wagging the dog.

My understanding (and I'm hardly a public health expert, so who knows?) is that the real cause of a high level of deaths would be less about the virus itself, and more about the healthcare system's inability to handle a huge influx of infected people simultaneously. For most (non-high risk people) this is a treatable disease, but the results would be worse in an overwhelmed healthcare system where the people who most need treatment can't get it.

So from a strategic standpoint, the objective is really just to level out the growth curve, not to eradicate it altogether. It doesn't have to be zero sum, but a reduction in large gatherings, closing schools, etc can help level that curve even if there are still plenty of other places people can come in contact with the virus.

The people who think this is an overreaction are not epidemiologists or public health officials. Hospitals is northern Italy are at 200% capacity right now and growing, with every available medical professional suddenly forced to be a pulmonary specialist. More than 9,000 confirmed cases and 600+ deaths. Now the whole country of 60 million is effectively on lockdown. That is what this virus does when running unchecked for weeks or months in a western democracy. Given the lack of testing, protocols and clear advice in this country, we could already be sitting on just such a tsunami of cases. Reducing public interaction and large gatherings is epidemic control 101. If this acts like a raging inferno a lot of people will die. If it’s a more controlled burn a lot of lives will be saved. It’s pretty simple. It sucks, and the world won’t end regardless of what happens, but this is not being done out of paranoia or based on conspiracy. They’re trying to control the spread to prepare for what is likely to be a large uptick in cases.

The NCAA brass who were on CBS over the weekend tried to make a distinction for their tournament because only the play-in games are on a college campus (Dayton). I guess the theory is that college campuses have more international students who may have traveled overseas to a Covid-19 infected country, so off-campus sites would be less likely to be infected. Doesn't make a lot sense, given that none of the victims in the Washington State nursing homes had been overseas or apparently near someone who had been. Of course, they might change their tune in the next few days.

It seems like the elected officials in Cleveland and the governor Dewine are trying to discourage large gatherings. I think that if they allows the Cavs games to proceed, they would have to let the tournament games proceed. Both Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden cancelled their rallies that were scheduled for today in Cleveland.

Remember two weeks ago he bagged the Arnold exposition, before any known cases in Ohio, and only a handful (less than 10) in the US. Organizations and schools have had very little choice in this matter when the governor calls a state of emergency and then strongly suggest that events be family only, what do you do?

As for Universities closing in person classes that’s just silly, the governor again is behind this. Dining halls and dorms will be open not to mention local establishments. These kids will be way more in contact on campus without in person classes than they ever were going to be sitting in Bentley Hall.

New Jersey just reported its first death from Coronavirus.

I work with the town where the man lived.

I was at a meeting there last night.

Yes,he tested positive for Corona.

But,he had emphysema,hypertension,diabetes,and cardiac problems.
His cause of death was a heart attack.(he survived one Monday,then had a second).

Yes,he tested positive,but its a stretch to say Coronavirus was the cause of death.
