They just announced cutbacks on the Arnold Festival in Columbus because of Covid-19. No trade show at all and no spectators until the finals on Saturday. We might see similar actions regarding the upcoming college basketball tourneys.

The Arnold is over 20,000 athletes and 250,000 people total with a lot of moving pieces. I still think it is dumb that they cancelled it, but think a conference tourney isn't as imposing for infectious disease concerns.

I work with five corporate clients pretty steadily. I'm doing coronavirus communications for four of them. The two largest ones have suspended all non-critical travel for all employees. Until this is sorted out, many organizations are opting for a cautious approach. Depending on how it progresses, it's easy to see some dramatic changes in the near future, especially for large gatherings of people like sporting events.

Personally for my business, we're worried about what they will say about the NCAA's here in a couple weeks. Does not bode well for us and we're debating whether to be involved as heavily or not due to issues, especially the Spokane site.

First cases in Ohio, all 3 in the Cleveland area...and a "state of emergency" declared. Given the safety first world we live in, I think it is a very real possibility the pull the plug and have them play in empty arenas.

“Let me be quite candid,” DeWine said. “I would not read too much into a state of emergency.”

DeWine is using a section of state law to declare the emergency. Among the provisions:

The state will be allowed to purchase medical equipment, for instance, and not have to go through the regular bidding process, which can take weeks or months because it allows many people to submit estimates and the state to vet them all. “It’s a legal necessity we have to go through if we’re going to be able to get these products quickly,” he said.
The Ohio Department of Health will create diagnostic and treatment guidelines and provide them to health care facilities across the state.
The order also allows the Ohio Department of Health to offer guidelines for restricting work and business travel if necessary.
State agencies can suspend rules or temporarily adopt new rules to help address the public health threat.
The public is urged to heed the advice of the health department and other emergency officials to protect their health and safety.
People who feel they’ve been subject to excessive costs for essential goods for coronavirus can call the Ohio Attorney General’s office at (800) 282-0515.

That's really unfair to the teams.

If you're that concerned about Coronavirus, play in an empty arena.

But,to deny these kids the opportunity for a chance to play in the NCAA
tournament seems to be an overreaction.

Coronavirus should be taken seriously, but decisions like this are why we are in a panic.

Ridiculous. In the same breath, they say they are cancelling for the safety of all involved...and then announce which teams will be sent to the big tournament. You know, the one with a lot more people, travel, and risk involved than this. If it is safety first, shouldn't they also refuse to send a team to the dance?

Makes sense when you consider it was to be played at Harvard and "The league tweeted this statement:

“The Ivy League has decided to cancel the League’s upcoming Basketball Tournaments and implement highly-restrictive, in-venue spectator limitations for all other upcoming campus athletics events.”

The announcement comes on the same day Harvard announced that all of its classes for the remainder of the spring semester have been moved online."

According to an epidemiologist who was on the radio this morning,,he expects, worst case, the number of corona cases to double every 6 days, till the end of March, then drop off dramatically.

That includes clusters in areas like Westchester,NY.

In the US that comes out to:

March 10 687 cases (positive test result, symptoms or not)

March 16 1374 cases

March 20 2748 cases

March 26 5496 cases

Of the 687, 679 are classified as "mild condition".

That's not a lot of people.
If you figure a population of 300 million that's 0.000018 % of the population.

Once we ramp up testing, we can see the numbers plateau like they did in China and South Korea. The administration was trying to control the numbers by having the cdc create guidelines to keep people from testing, it seems they have done a 180 and today they met with health insurers that are now encouraging people to get tested. Once we know who is positive, we can then conduct quarantines where needed and then the numbers will begin to plateau. China had 40 new cases yesterday, they are basically out of the woods.

Governor is meeting Wednesday with OSU and OHSAA. On all OHSAA winter championships, girls, boys basketball and wrestling. Look for strong arm approach to flat out cancel.

It’s a false flag, let’s ignore it. The cdc just sent out new test and they are beautiful just like the transcript. Who cares if it spreads? I am going to wear gas mask on the senate floor and be a true lackey, oops I got quarantined.

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not. I just think it's funny that it's taking a widespread infectious virus to remind people to wash their freaking hands and not lick handrails on a stairwell.

I agree the overreacting and cancellations are bullshit. Btw I read that the MAC'S main strategy in Cleveland is to install extra hand sanitizer stations in Rocket Mortgage at "strategic locations". I think Jerry Ippoloti suggested that.

Not sure if this is a recommendation or a mandate. Don't like the ambiguous "asking for" phrasing.

Governor Mike DeWine
@GovMikeDeWine
ATHLETICS: For indoor events, we are asking for no events with spectators other than the athletes, parents, and others essential to the game.

Right now, outdoor events can continue. #COVID19
