Groce doesn't win the MAC at OHIO but beats OHIO to secure MAC Championship circa 2020.
I'm okay with what he gave us instead.

I'm stunned you might have this perspective. ;-)

In fairness, BG pretty much gave away the outright championship. Pretty sure they had a 2 game lead over Akron with 5 games to go.

As an aside, look who is getting it done in terms of minutes and scoring for the Zippies in 2020:

Jackson - point guard
Cheese - guard
Banks - guard
Williams - SF/PF

Take it farther, look at who is getting it done for BG:

Turner - guard
Frye - guard
Plowden - SF
Diggs - G/SF
Fields - PG

Two different recruiting methods - BG with 4 year players, Akron with transfers - but the consistency is that they're winning primarily with guards and wings that can shoot, handle, defend, and rebound collectively.

For Ohio, the good news is, there are returning players in Preston, BVP, McDay, and Roderick that can be those kinds of players. They just need one more SF/SG type player to be added, or emerge to really take a step forward next year.

Also I would add:

Jackson - point guard - Redshirt Junior
Cheese - guard - Senior
Banks - guard - Senior
Williams - SF/PF - Senior

Turner - guard - Redshirt Junior
Frye - guard - Senior
Plowden - SF - Junior
Diggs - G/SF - Junior
Fields - PG - Sophomore

So of the 9 key players you mentioned off of the top two teams in the conference, there's 4 seniors, 2 redshirt juniors (so 4th year guys), 2 juniors, and just one soph. Our starting 5 for most of the year is sophomore, freshman, RS soph, senior, and a GS with limited playing experience. I'm anticipating that Boals will have this thing cooking nicely when we have our roster more balanced out and being able to run our more experience on a nightly basis.

Good point - good observation. That's kind of the reason I've been advocating for a transfer with the last scholarship -- to get older and more mature, and balance the classes a little more. As it stands now, there is only going to be one senior on the team - Murrell, plus BVP and Preston. It would be nice to add another Jr/Sr to the roster that can contribute immediately.

Preston is a true sophomore. I keep seeing him lumped with BVP who is a redshirt sophomore.

So what? The point is we have them both together for 2 more years, and that is awesome.

Speaking of BVP and Preston and the Akron game, which first-half play do you prefer?

1) Preston alley-oop to BVP cutting down the lane for an and-one?

or 2) Preston bounce pass to BVP cutting down the left baseline for a slam over Riak (I believe)?

Both a thing of beauty and teamwork.

Me too, three tourney victories and great recruits. Groce was great for us, I believe Boals will be great as well.
