I wonder if they'd ever consider having more officials work the games, and rather than having them run with play, just positioning an official in each of the key spots.
Short answer is NO
Why? Is somebody super into watching referees run around or something? A 3 man officiating crew basically has three positions. Make it a 6 man officiating crew, and you solve the running problem with masks.
Why NO? Because it’s NOT being discussed. Your comment or question was “I wonder if they’d consider having more officials work the games”. I simply answered the short answer to that is NO. 1. Schools would have to aregee to the 100% increase in cost, and that’s not happening. 2. The officiating community does not have enough quality to double the numbers.

You asked if they e thought about it and I’m telling you that is a NON starter.
Figured cost was a piece, but surprised by the lack of officials.

Especially given that there are thousands of people in the stands each night who are very certain they know better than the refs.

^^One of the reasons Ohio has been experiencing a shortage of officials across multiple sports and levels (from middle to high school). The problem is making it difficult for HS ADs and HS conference leaders to find enough officials as long time officials retire with few young men/women willing to take the abuse for the $$ paid.

There have been sporting events in my area and moved to a different date because there were not enough officials available on the regularly scheduled date. It's just been for soccer so far, but other sports are getitng close to having that issue.

This is not a problem only in HS, NCAA deals with it as well athe DII and III level.

Ohio is in good shape compared to other states in regards to numbers and pay. The average age though of an official in Ohio is 55, with some sports the average is above 60. The starting age is 37 in Ohio as well. When you think about the pay, if you drive an hour for a basketball game and make $70 for a game that last 90 minutes tops, you made $20 an hour. Stay closer to home it’s even more. Do a Freshman/JV DH and make maybe $40 an hour. Last year I cleared over $15k as a side job.

Years ago they came out with a mask that simulated high altitude training, by
restricting air flow when you ran.

Did a quick google search.

They still make them.

Don't look much different then some of the covid masks they are selling now.

I have enough trouble breathing thru a mask, waling in an air conditioned store.

Can't imagine running in one.
You shouldn't. They're dumb.

When they first came out they used to joke that you could accomplish the
the same thing running behind a bus in NYC.
