I got bored today and checked in to BA. This innocent topic looked interesting. It quickly turned into a thread about the rightness or wrongness preferences. I wish I wasn’t addicted to BA.

Bobcat2nc’s right. Someone was called “narrow minded” for going to Myrtle Beach for 20 years. So someone likes to go to one place year after year. So what? Good for them! It’s none of our business where people vacation. And who are we to deride their decision?

The condescension on this board has really Really ramped up over the years. Too bad, Tolerant of different viewpoints this board is not!

I'm not really seeing any condescension. I thought Billy's comment was innocent enough.

I'm not from Ohio, so never realized the connection between Ohio and South Carolina, though I did go to Hilton Head once during school. But it's very clear from the level of emotion in this thread that Ohioans take this topic very seriously.

Learn new things everyday.

Talk about a strange gym. Was down there for the MB Invitational last year and it was like being in the Ping Center with some bleachers on each side of the court. The court was basically in the student rec center.

Two years ago I stayed right around the corner from Sea Pines at the Westin. I'd have to say Hilton Head seemed run down from how I remembered it back in the 80's when it was magical. Less development. Today it feels like a small city rather than an exclusive story. True story back in 88' I ran into David Stern outside an NBA store open down there at the time. He asked me why I bought a Miami Heat T-Shirt and if I was from Miami. They were an expansion team that year so was excited.
To the extent that it's become more developed, and much more crowded, I agree. My folks live on the north side of HHI, and when we visit, we rarely venture towards Sea Pines or Coligny anymore. It takes 30+ minutes to go 7 miles. I could ride a bike that way just about as fast.

Me too. A week at the beach is plenty. First went to the Outer Banks in 1962 and stayed on Ocracoke. Now that's relaxation.
Agreed, though I'll take it father. I only need about 3 days at the beach. The two best things about the beach are sunrise/sunset, and boche ball. After that, I'm bored just sitting there baking or reading.

Reasons the mountains are great in the summer:

-Cooler, by far.
-Less crowded in general.
-At least near the mountains of NC/VA have, there are tons of great wineries and other things to do besides sit there and bake in the sun and read.



All that said, I've never been to The OB. I've always wanted to though.

My comment is, I do not get the vacation at the same beach for 20 years, with all my neighbors and folks from my hometown. Those folks have fun, good for them. But there is ALOT of country out there to see, and I’m trying to see as much as possible. That’s what’s for me, that’s what I enjoy. People want to go to same beach year after year, good for them. I just don’t understand personally.

Isn't there a granddaddy or two footing the bill on those family gatherings? Parents are bringing their kids so they can free load on granddaddy's fat retirement pension. Younger generations are not exactly awash with money in Ohio after decades of low wage growth.

In our household, we need wine and wineries as part of vacation most of the time. Nothing wrong with breweries too though. ;)

I've visited Ashville for exactly one day. Enjoyed it immensely and would go back.

This is why I would suggest a trip up the Pacific Coast Highway 1 in California to anyone. Best of both worlds: beach and mountains. Big Sur is an exceptional spot to do some hiking and camping on the hillside with a view of the ocean.

Learn how to surf in Southern Cal for a day. Stay at a small fishing town another. Find a cabin or camp the next. Honestly one of my favorite trips and would suggest to anyone.
